April 7, 201115 yr Voted for Coldplay just because I don't take this thread seriously at all since apparently U2 is a British band. In reality I'd have to say Arctic Monkeys. And now that I think about it, I actually don't listen to that many British bands. I don't think there have been many good ones lately. The only other one that comes to mind immediately is The Maccabees.

April 7, 201115 yr just to set things straight i think the british scene has been incredible in the last 4 to 5years. just to list some of the better acts to breakthrough or release good music in that period. Arctic Monkeys - Favourite Worst Nightmare and Humbug (and Last Shadow Puppets) Chemical Brothers - Further Klaxons - Myths of the Near Future Muse - HAARP Radiohead - In Rainbows Elbow - Seldom Seen Kid Foals - Antidotes and Total Life Forever Friendly Fires Glasvegas Kaiser Chiefs Laura Marling - I Speak... and Alas I Cannot... Bat For Lashes - Two Suns The Big Pink Florence and the Machine Mumford & Sons the xx - xx Gorillaz - Plastic Beach Hot Chip Kate Nash PJ Harvey - Let England Shake my point? there has been a shitload of great music coming out of that part of the world and that some of you need to open your ears a little more.
April 7, 201115 yr ^ Which Kaiser Chiefs though? I think they're good but haven't released anything as good as fellow mainstream British acts like Muse, Coldplay the past 5 years. But with The Seldom Seen Kid and Build A Rocket Boys there's only one act in my mind who can be called the best British band at the moment. The rest haven't come close.
April 7, 201115 yr i thought Yours Truly was a fairly decent album but i listed them cos they're an incredible live act. for mine the battle is really between Foals and Elbow. elbow for the quality of their music but foals for their incredible live show. whether arctic monkeys can keep up with them is dependent on how this new album of theirs turns out.

I really liked the XX album. Gorillaz was pretty enjoyable as well. As for the lastest Arctic Monkeys album, The Big Pink, Mumford & Sons, Kaiser Chiefs, Glasvegas, Muse, etc. I just haven't enjoyed their stuff at all.

April 7, 201115 yr Jesus, is this what British music boils down to in the eyes of the rest of the world? - dodgy old has-beens like U2 who aren't even British anyway, gobby shites like Oasis who are no longer relevant and didn't release anything note-worthy after Morning Glory anyway and the standard fare of Coldplay & Radiohead because they are the big names that everyone has heard of..? Are these to be our representatives? :shame: Just because these are four of the biggest names in guitar music, it does not equate that any of them could be described as the 'best', it's such an irrelevant question really, cos it all comes down to personal opinion. Define the term 'best'... Anyway, that list of breakthrough bands on the previous page is a step in the right direction but totally misses out bands like Biffy Clyro, Elbow, Kasabian, Editors. Good bands that are passionate and dedicated to challenging and bettering themselves as artists. (And no, nononono, the Kaiser Chiefs should not be tagged as great british music, you might aswell have mentioned Keane :rolleyes: ) And of course the truely innovative and inspirational stuff like The Beta Band, Super Furries, The Coral etc are always overlooked and forgotten. Not big names but those are the ones geting the critical acclaim and the ones who are inspiring/have inspired new bands. So yeah, I voted 'Other' cos for me (as much as I :heart: Coldplay) there are dozens of british bands that I would describe as technically better or more important in terms of musical direction than the other choices :shrug:

April 7, 201115 yr I think we are all going to perceive the best british band at the moment differently because we all listen to different aspects of British music. It may be easy to say that one band is the best but I highly doubt that it would be representative of the whole music scene there are the time. Also, who would know better which is the best, the people who live in Britain themselves, or listeners that live outside Britain? I imagine that it would need to take all of these things into account if you were going to come up with a single, absolute statement that says, "so-and-so are the best British band at the moment".
