After hearing and taking part in this discussion my updated tracklist is as follows:

I dont understand why people are looking sooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo deaply into the track listing. Coldplay has never used their albums to tell a story, (They may try this time) but they aren't great novelists, so its not going to be as in depth as you say.

 

The tracklisting is going to be what fits/works well together in the end, and that is that. Its not going to be decided because Chris said "Well thing song works well with the story that we are trying to tell by having people listen to our album." We will just have to wait and see.

How do you know they've never used them to tell a story? Have you asked them? Have you sat with Chris and actually asked him? I highly doubt you have. Formulating one's own opinion and deciding things for himself is what makes us human, and is the primary theme in which we are discussing from this new album, obviously you lack the coherence and decision-making ability to formulate and share your own thoughts, you'd rather knock people enjoying good debate.

I dont think Princess of China will be left off. May it has an Anti-Climax compared to the other songs but that is what the song makes special and mysterious in a way and i dont know why but i feel its going to be THE important song of Mylo Xyloto...

I think people are so interested in the tracklisting because we have 5 or so songs that we have already listened to, which have all conveyed themes and motives that are paramount for the upcoming album. On top of that, other potential track titles have been released, which gives people enough information in order to attempt to create their own ideas for what the lp may look like.

 

It kinda reminds me of ncaa march madness brackets, where there is really no chance of knowing who's going to win and who's going to finish where, but we all fill out our brackets to see how close we get to the actual outcome. That's my opinion

^ ^ I think it's an awesome song (synth scream, anyone? :awesome:) but it seems too . . . different from the other songs we've heard so far from this era. To me it doesn't have any underlying themes of rebellion (oh wait . . . lightbulb turning on here: maybe PoC deals with rebelling against an arranged marriage or something?).

 

It almost sounds like it's from the Vive era. :shrug:

Also, VIVA didnt tell a story, (THE ALBUM). the song did. All the songs did indevidually, but not collectivly. If you want to draw really loose and poorly constructed lines between songs, I suppose you could create a really loose story, but there isnt much there. It had similar themes between songs, but it wasnt any story.

I can see what you mean, but I feel like I would personally want to find out what is the B-side to Paradise and then you would have a good chance of tracklistings.

 

The titles of their songs rarely have anything to do with the meaning though. (lately)

 

Major Minus, Viva La Vida, Charlie Brown, etc. I just think to look at the song titles and try and see the meanings is a longshot.

And yes, all of the individual songs on Viva told their own story, but they also added to the overall story of the entire album/era which was basically life, death, and the choices we make because of it (i.e. war as in Violet Hill or love/lust in Yes). So while they certainly didn't make a straightforward story with a traditional plotline or something, the way the songs interact with each other suggests that they are all part of something bigger (the album as a whole).

Well to each his own, you're entitled to your opinion, that doesn't mean it's absolute, nor does it mean it's fact. That's the beauty of art, each person that views it is allowed to bask in it and formulate one's own meanings.

To be honest, for me there are just wishes what songs should be on Mylo Xyloto because it would make me proud to see my favourite tracks on the LP,thats for sure ! If they are not, of course i would be very disappointed...yeah, if they are released as B-Sides or on another EP like Prospekts March that would be a little consolation for me but not the same as being on the album,they have worked so long and hard for ! My Opinion

One more thing while I'm here though; if there were no story being told, or theme being connected, why would sequencing be such a vital aspect to the album-making process? After all they are just a bunch of unrelated songs right?

all I am saying is Coldplays albums are Theme related NOT story related, that is all.

I don't think Sex and Violence would go over well with EMI. It's just not Coldplay. They never even mention sex in their songs and they are very family friendly.

I do have a theory which may link Princess of China to the theme of the album. Judging by the lyrics to it, I think this "King" (the one who wrote the song) may possibly be the leader of this "Major Minus" network (perhaps the head of a government?). His daughter, the "Princess", is disgusted by his actions and motives, but plays along with what her father was doing ("Once upon a time, we're on the same side") until she was older, when she decides to run away and join the underground movement ("You let me go..."). After the "King" finds out what she does, he talks about how she could have had a wonderful and prosperous life if she didn't abandon his side ("You could have been a princess...").

 

I know it sounds rather far-fetched and silly, and it may just be me wanting the song on the album so bad, but that's my take on it :D
