October 26, 201114 yr Knowing Pitchfork not being a Coldplay fan, 7 is pretty good. And the album deserves a good rating by the way!!!
October 26, 201114 yr You guys do realise that this is just some person's opinion - right? Pitchfork isn't some god like entity. It's just a person's opinion. This person likes the album. While Pitchfork isn't as influential as it once was, its reviews still hold considerable weight in the critical reception of an album- hence the 3 separate threads all on this review alone. :P
October 26, 201114 yr I love the way everyone is so flabbergasted and can't get their mind around it. You guys do realise that this is just some person's opinion - right? Pitchfork isn't some god like entity. It's just a person's opinion. This person likes the album. What's so surprising about it? Well...yeah. But...it's frickin' Pitchfork we're talking about.
October 26, 201114 yr For some perspective: Parachutes: 5.3/10 A Rush of Blood to the Head: 5.1/10 X&Y: 4.9/10 Viva la Vida: 6.9/10 Prospekt's March: 6.0/10 Mylo Xyloto: 7.0/10 Further proving my theory that Coldplay has drawn so much hatred over the years that Pitchfork has suddenly realized that hating on Coldplay is way too mainstream, and now has no choice but to LIKE them in order to stay hip and contrary. But seriously, I feel more slobbering from this review than in other sources' 8/10 and 9/10 reviews. Or maybe they actually think Coldplay are getting better, like a large amount of their fans?! I actually agree with Pitchfork's reviews mostly, although each albums score would go up about 3-4 (thus making MX an 11!) Also I agree with raghavanviv, this is one of the only reviews I've read that actually contextualizes the album with their previous discography and where they are today, as many reviews have either missed the point of the album and where it sits with Coldplay's mindset today, or haven't actually realized this is a subtle progression (rather than just saying "it's the same old Coldplay" without any substantial proof.
October 26, 201114 yr While Pitchfork isn't as influential as it once was, its reviews still hold considerable weight in the critical reception of an album- hence the 3 separate threads all on this review alone. :P It's really sad that people leach off irrelevant reviewers opinions. What happened to the days of making your own mind up about something? Them days are gone man. Long gone.
October 26, 201114 yr It's really sad that people leach off irrelevant reviewers opinions. What happened to the days of making your own mind up about something? Them days are gone man. Long gone. Thinking for yourself died when Al Gore invented the Internet. It's so passé.
October 26, 201114 yr "the band is very much aware that they could just release "a new Coldplay album" that would leave everyone involved satisfied-- this is essentially what happened on 2005's X&Y, their fastest seller and also their weakest LP according to many. But being criticized as bantamweight compared to peers like U2, R.E.M., or Radiohead has clearly worn on them-- and truth is, they're all the better for their guilty conscience about a total lack of post-punk credentials. While Coldplay will always be more enjoyable than groundbreaking and their artistic advances seen as smart troubleshooting than divine intervention, Mylo Xyloto works because the band once again manages to sound like Coldplay without sounding like any of their previous LPs, maintaining their stadium-spanning grandeur while subtly challenging preconceptions." that's why some fans don't like the album. Coldplay transforms their style into something different this time and honestly, I love it.
October 26, 201114 yr Author Or maybe they actually think Coldplay are getting better, like a large amount of their fans?! like a large amount of their NEW fans.
October 26, 201114 yr like a large amount of their NEW fans. Says the guy with 22 posts. I've adored Coldplay since Parachutes and I think they're getting better and better. With the exception of X&Y. That album was rubbish. Most of us have too, and most of us adore this new album.
October 26, 201114 yr This is an example as to why reading reviews and taking them at face value is stupid. It's soooo subjective. They're really polarized on this one. Yup. AROBTTH got a 5.1 score. If that ain't batshit insane, then I don't know what is.
October 26, 201114 yr The reviewer raises a very good point in my opinion: "I've never heard anyone complain about Jon Buckland's guitar tone or the rhythm section not being up to snuff. All sonic tinkering aside, Martin is still a full-time target" I don't think i've ever seen anyone criticise the band's playing ability, they usually just blatantly attack Chris, for whatever reason (which is usually an invalid one) Nice to see a positive review from a respectable outlet.

Yeah, I've spoken about that before ages ago on here. No one really criticises any of their technical ability - most of their hate comes from personal attack on Chris.
October 26, 201114 yr Just read the review and found two very worth while quotes: Mylo Xyloto finds Coldplay successfully continuing to explore the tension of wanting to be one of the be AND ...manages to sound like Coldplay without sounding like any of their previous LPs, maintaining their stadium-spanning grandeur while subtly challenging preconceptions. Pretty much sums up my feelings of the album.
October 26, 201114 yr Whether it deserves a 7 or not (which it so does, stop moaning), I'd like to see that Metacritic rating shoot up. So I'd take a 7 gladly.
October 26, 201114 yr Author Whether it deserves a 7 or not (which it so does, stop moaning) . no,it doesn't deserve a 7. (stop crying)
October 26, 201114 yr Wow, I was expecting 4 or 5 at least, but 7 is great... and I always read album reviews on Pitchfork :amazing:
October 26, 201114 yr I hate Pitchfork, no matter what. They are so bloated with their own importance, they make me crazy.
October 26, 201114 yr Andddd, back on topic! I never expected MX to get a 7 from Pitchfork. Because I still never got why they rated AROBTTH that EXTREMELY low.

October 26, 201114 yr I never understood that ethier, AROBTTH I feel is their strongest album to date. Its great! Pitchfork drastically underrated AROBTTH. I think with hype comes their scrutiny.

Hipsters Gonna Be Hip! Seriously though, I think hell just froze over.
