they're so hipster that they think that liking coldplay is cool. There isn't another explanation for this, MX isn't better than AROBTTH,

Brilliantly written review. Ian Cohen is one of my favorite writers.

Also, to all those saying "How can they rank this higher than [insert other Coldplay album here]" should step back and think for a second: The reviews for Parachutes and AROBTTH were written a long time ago, and a few of the reviews were written by people who don't even work for the site any more. And, different reviewers have different opinions. Joe Tangari thinks AROBTTH is a 5.1, but it sounds like Ian Cohen likes it a lot more, judging by his Mylo Xyloto review ("Which isn't to say that Mylo lacks populist thrill; it's just trying to mine alternative sources. They've sidled up toward music of more hedonistic ideals before, especially on A Rush of Blood to the Head; Martin's vocals on "Clocks" worked incredibly well filtered through dance remixes, while the ecstatic surge of "Daylight" really needed no translation.")

AROBTTH is my fave album, so I'm kinda disappointed that anyone could rate it so low... but I can see what they might have disliked about it. On AROBTTH, many of the songs have a similar sound to them.

 

That sound is unadulterated awesome.

 

Unfortunately, critics don't like it and view it as "unoriginality" I guess. I'm perfectly happy to have the same fantastic vibe flowing through my head for the entire album.

 

So perhaps it's the complete song variation of Mylo Xyloto that got these critics fired up?

 

Admittedly, the album's not what I hoped it'd be, and I don't think it's quite as iconic as Rush of Blood. If Coldplay were to infuse more of the AROBTHH vibe into new songs whilst still maintaining some of the energy and tone of MX, then they might just crack the code to get those critics to open up.

In all honesty, I think that this is the fairest review.

He explains WHY he thought it was a 7, and went into detail about its strengths and weaknesses.

I really appreciate that, although I never expected Pitchfork to give it a 7. That was a shock in itself.

I love the album, and I appreciate all that it did.

A lot of people/reviewers are complaining that it sounds too pop and Bieberish, but honestly, that is their competition, and they now will have to fight to stay relevant in the future.

And not all pop is bad, theres really good pop. Coldplay has managed to explore pop while still remaining Coldplay, just like the reviewer said.

On iTunes it has a 4.5/5 rating based on 7000 reviews. Apparently they are doing something right.

In my opinion, its a 9 or 10.

Im just glad that there was at least one major reviewer who understood what Coldplay was doing, and appreciated it.

You guys do realise that this is just some person's opinion - right? Pitchfork isn't some god like entity. It's just a person's opinion. This person likes the album.

 

In Pitchfork, to order to maintain their good credibility/authority, I think they generally collectively discuss and set a tone for a major album review before it's been actually written by one person.

 

I've adored Coldplay since Parachutes and I think they're getting better and better. With the exception of X&Y. That album was rubbish.

Actually, a lot of people say "an historic", and it drives me nuts.

If MX us a 7 then Viva should be way off the scale beyond 10. While MX has disappointed me it has done one thing which has made me reaffirm my belief that Viva is their finest production.

Knowing Pitchfork, AROBTTH will probably get a 10.0 once they bring out the Anniversary Edition in 2017.

Technically, that's the way it's supposed to be. Which is bullshit.

I've hated pitchfork since they mercilessly bashed TATE's first album.

I think it's because they came from VLV, which made them a bit more credible and arty than with X&Y at the time. Plus MX is their weirdest album ever, which Pitchfork might like.

Pitchfork is another source which gives the album a good mark with regard to the other album marks. Interesting that most reviews of serious media are very positive on Mylo Xyloto (BBC, Financal Times, some German high quality media etc...). Very interesting and shows that the album isn't just pop and mainstream.

It is now so cool to hate Coldplay that Pitchfork like them.
