Coldplay at the Stadium of Light

COLDPLAY went down a storm at the Stadium of Light tonight despite dismal rainy weather and today's Metro strike causing disruption for thousands of gig-goers.

Traffic was heavy heading into Sunderland but most fans reported that they arrived at the venue without too many problems, although parking in Sunderland city centre was put under additional pressure by a Drifters gig at Sunderland Empire.

By any means possible was the mindset of North East folk determined not to let the Metro strike stop them from seeing Coldplay. The strike was set to hit up to 20,000 heading to the gig at the Stadium of Light in Sunderland but, for the most part, people got to their seats on time without much disruption.

Car shares, free buses and plenty of forward-planning made sure concert-goers normally taking the Metro didn’t come unstuck.

Sharon Lambert, of Newcastle, said: “We decided to drive and everything has been absolutely fine, in fact, it’s been better that the Metro was off. This is my first concert and we just got the normal service bus from Gateshead. We’ve not been disrupted at all.”

Pat Johnson, of Chester-le- Street, County Durham, said: “It’s quite inappropriate to strike today but I expect they are looking for impact. One of our group would have got the Metro from Newcastle to Sunderland but we’ve just driven and it’s all been straightforward.”

Free service buses from Newcastle city centre to the Stadium of Light were well-used but most people chose to drive.

Apart from slow-moving traffic leaving Newcastle and delays around the junction with Wessington Way in Sunderland as the traffic lights stopped working, most people’s journeys were straightforward.

City centre parking was full by 6pm, with St Mary’s car park closing and then letting just one car in at a time, and there were some negative comments about the one-off increase in parking fees at the Bridges car park, which is normally free after 6pm.

However, not everyone’s journey was such plain sailing and the strikes did cause problems for a few. Bank manger Tony Howell, 32, who works at Team Valley but lives in Sunderland, had to get picked up from work at 3.30pm by his partner to get to the stadium on time.

He said: “We talk about deprivation and things being hard, and this is bringing a lot of publicity to the North East and it’s putting a struggle on a lot of people.”
