The Final Track Posted October 29, 2012 Share Posted October 29, 2012 I've seen some of the damage the rain from Irene caused in Vermont, they are still repairing the bridges which got washed away, some of the roads no longer exist.Ā We drove passed a house which had just been washed off its foundations and up on the side of the road, so yeah, Irene caused a lot of damaged. In the areas where the air is cold enough, they're getting snow instead of rain. Areas of West Virginia will have up to 3 feet of snow by tomorrow. Others have water up to the platforms. Altogether, about 45 miles of the subway are completely unusable.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā NY taxi cabs (parked in New Jersey) are flooded out, likely can't be used again.Ā Ā Ā Ā Seaside Heights, New Jersey (yes, the "Jersey Shore", but it was popular LONG before that) is pretty much destroyed. The boardwalk and pier are submerged and/or washed away into the ocean. Looks like a lot of the houses within several streets of the beach are a loss also.Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Ā Honestly even with all the warnings, I just didn't think it would really end up being this bad. Ā I read somewhere that the aftermath of the hurricane will have a negative impact on US economy initially, but later that might change (reconstruction etc.). No doubt about that.Ā Also Canada was affected. Ā 1 died in Canada - more than 30 died in the US east coast from West Virginia to North Carolina and Connecticut, New York and New Jersey, and 69 human lives were lost in the Caribbean. So the hurricane will end up having claimed more than 100 human lives - add to that huge, the huge material damage.Ā Many of the deaths were caused by falling bricks or trees.Ā Breach of dykes in the northern part of New Jersey caused massive flooding - i.a. in the little coastal town of Moonachia close to Little Ferry.Ā The hurricane was big covering an area of 900 miles from Boston down to Georgia.Ā Ā HAITI has also been hit - here the hurricane claimed 52 lives,, and 200,000 have become homeless.Ā At least 69 died in 6 different countries in the Caribbean.Ā Ā I wonder whether the hurricane will end up having an effect on the presidential election next Tuesday. Anything to that?Ā I heard yesterday on BBC News that it could be a negative impact of 0.2% of GDP.
