Yes, you got it! Money didn't exist on Mayans society neither on the Aztecs. What they used were different things jade, corn and cocoa. Cocoa was very important for them even it was considered a sacred gift of the gods. As you know cocoa is the foundation of chocolate and at the end of Up With The Birds the "something" you can hear about "it" (chocolate) is Chris eating "it"
