I think the live version is much better, but not because of Rihanna, but because of that silly beat. The studio beat sounds much too relaxed and laid-back. It lacks the tension of the pounding live version; there is no climax towards the end. The live version gives me chills.

It seems to me that he doesn't really like spotlight, just like the others. Musicwise, I think that the basslines in ETIAW, MM and even Paradise are really good.

Imo they're not similar at all. I find Videotape a much better song than Up In Flames. Thinking of it, I think I understand what you mean by it. But still, the songs create totally different emotions for me. I have to admit that I don't like Up In Flames for its repetitiveness. Imo the guitar riff is the best part of the song.

I think it's because Things I Don't Understand sounds unresolved. It's a bit like edging; you're getting close to it, but just don't quite make it over the top. There is no resolution to the musical idea. DLIBYH, in contrast, DOES resolve it at the end of the chorus. Also, the tempo is the same and the chord progressions are similar (albeit the key differs by a semitone). I feel like Things I Don't Understand expresses some kind of unfullfilled yearning with a bittersweet taste, while DLIBYH rather gives an uplifting feeling. Besides, I don't you could rock an arena with Things I Don't Understand. :wtf:
