  1. That would be nice yeah. Think of a song like UATW though - very understated climax yet very powerful as I think most of us would agree. Indeed, Magic and Midnight do this - they get big, but not too big. But bigger than big. That will be very interesting for this album. :)
  2. ^Yep he does use a looper there. That said, I think in Strawberry Swing and 42, there are backing tracks consisting of guitar that Jonny plays over.
  3. Speaking of pedals......different sources say Jonny uses a Boss RV-3 vs. RV-5..does anyone know which is the actual one, or if you have a personal preference between those two and the RV-2? Thanks!
  4. No idea....but as a fellow guitar player also buying a lot of pedals right now...I'd say get what feels right to you (if you can try in person that's ideal) or just see what the reviews say. Even if you have the exact same rig as Jonny you won't sound like him because that too depends on the guitar, the amp, and moreover the person. Best of luck though - I haven't tried those particular pedals. I only use a Boss SD-1 but it has been quite useful. *Wikipedia suggests Noel Gallagher really likes the Ibanez Tubescreamer, so that's something.
  5. Oops I just realized my mistake - I thought you meant his heart almost stopped due to being in the accident, not from thinking you were at the.......nevermind
  6. Jaja thanks to those who thought what I had to say was remotely interesting. Oh no I hope he's doing alright. :( My girlfriend and her entire family were right under but they're all okay save for her father who's got some fractured ribs and vertebrae. The stupidity of it - I was teasing her for not getting tickets to this gig since it's right near her neighbourhood. Later that night she tells me: "I wish I went to the other Apollo."
  7. ^Whoa - two very funny observations: 1. The chord progressions in the chorus of Atlas and Me and Tennessee are very similar. If you started Atlas's chorus on the 3rd chord (or MAT on the 3rd chord) you would have the other song. Try singing one over the other, seriously. *Though to be fair, this progression also shows up in: Where the Stars Go Blue, Paradise, the middle section of Swallowed in the Sea, Wonderwall, Green Eyes, Boulevard of Broken Dreams, Mad World, Pumped Up Kicks, Writing to Reach You, If I Had a Gun............ :p 2. The slide guitar in the chorus of each song is very similar! Let us not forget slide guitar became prominent in blues music and then everything else to follow.
  8. Great article, photos, and video! Funny you should make that comment about Jonny's guitar being especially present - I noticed on Clocks and Paradise, Jonny did a couple extra things [though the fact that he was using a Telecaster instead of Strat on Paradise prevented him from making the solo extra-good as it was in the MX era]. Atlas was clearly a fun time for Jonny - slide and ebow, a combo we haven't seen since, you named it, See You Soon. In particular though, Jonny played electric on Christmas Lights where previously he played acoustic guitar. Hence, he really shined through on the solo near the end of the song as well as throughout - and I noticed this because after hearing the last few live versions, I would always think to myself "I wish Jonny would play the electric on this so we could hear that damn solo!" And indeed - he started playing the solo in the 2011 rendition of the song, but still on acoustic. So he kind of granted my wish here by playing it on electric. That's my long Jonny rant for the day. :)
  9. I'll explain this if anyone is curious, but I have a strong feeling that the song is about Afghanistan.
  10. Wow I really like Easy Fall. It reminds me of Life is For Living (the album version) or something on Yellow House by Grizzly Bear. The guitars and synths all work together really well. The drums are good too. It's a very good balance between unique sounding and catchy. The instrumental at the end is really cool! The guitar solo and the synth are perfect there. I think My Chance certainly has potential too. I listened to it again and it's got a really pleasant guitar-voice melody combo. Are you solo at this point? Thanks for the kind words about our music..it's especially interesting to hear the comparisons because yours have followed the pattern of not actually reflecting who we were "trying" to sound like (Queen, REM).
  11. Describing HLH as "Chris on the piano" --> not taking this seriously. Jonny MAKES that song.
  12. Don't cry. :p I enjoyed it - your voice is pleasant both in the low and high range, and the guitar arpeggiation is pretty (not the rhythm is not perfect). The only thing I'd say is that the overall package seems somewhat repetitive, so you might want to think about how to produce the song in a way that moves it forward. For example, having more instrumentation as the song goes on (or more at the beginning and peeling it back). If you have a chance, I'd appreciate if you could check out my band here:
  13. This is amazing!!!!!!!!!!!!!! [ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3qM8AnkwtmM]Prospekt's March by Coldplay in Live ! - YouTube[/ame]
  14. Amsterdam Up With the Birds Moving to Mars DAAHF I second Violet Hill with Chris on the piano (so that it's more like the album version) Basically I want to see Chris on the piano more. :p
  15. This is an interesting metric. I go to uni too and see the same trend. I think an explanation (that doesn't necessarily reinforce or discount what you're saying, I'm just observing) for this is that none of MX's songs are very easy for a single person to just sit down and play and sing and sound good on. Paradise requires drums to sound good, ETIAW requires electric guitar, HLH requires electric guitar...even UIF needs drums. The only ones I could see a person play on their own is POC and CB but those don't sound that good on piano anyways.
  16. Christmas Lights, Atlas (as a band), Moving to Mars, and unheard material from LP6? :D
  17. Hey y'all - since I owned this thread, I just wanted to spam one of my songs. You can listen to it here: And like our Facebook page at: https://www.facebook.com/Racemates?notif_t=page_new_likes
  18. I hope Jonny is in attendance too.....
  19. This is not exactly what Will does, but it DOES sound good and if you have someone playing the bassline, you are set. [in fact, this is exactly how I play it] Let me know if there are questions..I threw it together in 5 minutes just now. Billie Jean – Michael Jackson (Coldplay version) Verses: [Gm – Am/G – Bb/G – Am/G] x2 [Cm – Cm – Cm - Cm] [Gm – Am/G – Bb/G – Am/G] Before the second chorus, you do the [Cm] and following [Gm] line an extra time. Each chord is: Gm – xxx333 Am/G – xxx555 Bb/G – xxx766 Cm – x35543 Chorus [Eb – Gm – Eb – Gm] [Eb – Gm – Eb – Dsus4 (half length)- D (half length)] Eb – x6888x Gm – 355333 Dsus4 – xx233, D – xx232
  20. The particular production on his voice also makes it sound a bit drier / less reverby than it might be on a song like Charlie Brown or Paradise. Will's voice sounds superb doesn't it? :D
  21. Do you have to have Twitter to do this competition??
  22. I love this song...it shows a great deal of balancing the same way that Moving to Mars did - and luckily puts this style of Coldplay in the forefront. Both of these songs took the sparse piano style of AROBTTH and used more complex progressions that recall Viva-era songs and then mixed them with the spaciness of the X&Y era. The drums, guitar, bass, and outro remind me of the hiphop/electronic influence in songs like Paradise and ETIAW. What I like most is that the song sounds really epic and big without a great deal of synth or backing tracks. They're there, but it's back to X&Y levels, which are a much more optimal amount to me. This was also the case in Moving to Mars (besides its acoustic guitar part). In other words, it really sounds like Atlas is a song that is meant for exactly 4 people to play, and you can tell how each one is important - Chris has a fantastic piano line that unlike a song like the Scientist, actually moves the melody just as much as the lead guitar...Jonny with some EXCELLENT spacey stuff in addition to the solo, Will's drum line is pretty cool because if you analyze it, it actually sounds more like a hip hop song's drums but still fits perfectly...Guy's bassline isn't super profound but it still does the job. Wishes for this song though: 1. Better lyrics as many have said - I think they were going for sort of a cryptic storytelling, but it comes off to me as disjoint statements. And that's not to say Coldplay hasn't been successful with this style, because they have - in songs like HLH, ETIAW, DLIBYH, and above all, Charlie Brown. I just don't think it was optimally executed here. Perhaps an extra verse and a more complex chorus would've done it. 2. A longer outro...the guitar-piano interplay at the end is amazing, and Will's singing is great too. It didn't feel abrupt to me, but an extra 30 seconds of jamming out would've been nice. Ultimately my vote is a 9/10 since it is good in so many ways but is slightly short of perfect in my mind.

I saw that on Facebook the other day...sounds excellent live!!!
  24. Noel Gallagher in both his solo work and time in Oasis is my favourite lyricist. Not always the most elaborate or deep stuff, but it's simple and it has a lot of honest truth in it. "And now my life has turned another corner, I think it's only best that I should warn ya, Dream it while you can, Maybe some day I'll make you understand."
  25. Bon Iver - For Emma, Forever Ago Grizzly Bear - Yellow House I don't think there's any album quite like any of Coldplay's albums. :) A couple of the songs on Parachutes (Spies, High Speed in particular) remind me of stuff on OK Computer or The Bends but as whole albums, they're all quite different.
