Watch live iHeart Radio album release party [May 19th 2014]
I just caught the guitar solo in True Love and then that happened.

Next singles
This. That said, I could see, and kind of hope, that Another's Arms becomes a single as well. I like it a lot more than Ink.

Guy is back!
MX is pretty guitar+synth heavy to me. Another's Arms bassline... I remember hearing the iTunes version and thinking, DAMN THAT'S A LOT OF NOTES. Also - if you listen to the album version of AIMH, there are actually two basslines playing during the instrumental section in the middle of the song after the 1st chorus. At the iTunes performance, Guy plays the lower bassline, and in subsequent shows, he has been playing the higher bassline. :D

NBC DVD SPECIAL TRAILER! (May 18, 2014)
Turned off the TV after Clocks because I couldn't deal with all these commercials. Now I come on CPing and hear there's no Midnight. WTF IS THAT. <-- they used Midnight in the preview for the special and it's not on there?! I hope the DVD comes true...otherwise I'll be megadisappointed.

Guy is back!
He had a phenomenal lines in ETIAW and MM, and fairly important roles in HLH, UATW, POC... This album's basslines are great. Magic and Midnight are fantastic. However, it took me about 10 listens to hear the bassline on True Love...it's pretty good but some of the mixing on that song I just don't agree with. ASFOS and AIMH have great bass "solos". :)

Jon Hopkins Remix
Whoa...that's meta. A remix of a song based on his own song...........

How does Midnight fit in Ghost Stories?
I wish Midnight opened or closed the album...it's much more mysterious and interesting and engaging in a way that really pulls you in.

LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"
What makes you say Chris is running out of ideas? If anything it seemed like he's still prolific as ever but insecure about showing the world anything but the top 10. Nonetheless I agree that the J/G/W have good things up their sleeves. Magic is quite Guy-indeed. HLH, according to a Chris interview, is very Jonny-composed, which would explain why it's so damn good. I'd also like to see Will sing lead vocals on a studio track, like the 2 songs sung by Chris Wolstenholme on the last Muse album.

Is O the best song Coldplay have ever recorded?
I wasn't completely sold on the hype on first listen but going back to it, there are some great atmospherics coming from Jonny's guitar, fantastic backing vocals from Will, and a solid bassline from Guy. It's not nearly as climactic or satisfying as Amsterdam was the first time I heard that song. But it's still a very beautiful song. The imagery and the visual album bit and the piano is all very tight and beautiful. On a music theory basis, by the way, the time signature/rhythm is very interesting. Almost 6/8 but then not quiet. I haven't figured out what's going on but it's weird but it works! As for best Coldplay track...I think I like UATW better as that quiet, honest, and beautiful song. Overall, I like Amsterdam, Strawberry Swing, DAAHF, MX/HLH better I think.

Is HLH still alive on you?
^Indeed!! I think HLH would be a good post-B-stage song or encore opener. :) I agree..there's a weird amount of "space" during the verses because Jonny doesn't do that simple 1-note line.

Is HLH still alive on you?
The live version is definitely better since the guitar lines are more defined and the drums are more lively (though the electronic drums really aren't bad or detracting). If there's one thing about the studio version I don't like it's the guitar solo where Jonny does the big descent..some of the notes are kind of muddy. Anyhow, HLH is an excellent song. A great energetic starter. MX is very pretty and he way they use that motif in the whole album is very clever. Moreover, there's something about each instrument that's great - Jonny's best guitar solos in ANY Coldplay song (you really don't know where it's going to go but it's so pretty and has so much motion - the solo after the first chorus is NOT repetitive the way Charlie Brown and In My Place are), a great bassline especially at the end, VERY involved drumming from Will, a nice moment of group vocals at the last chorus... when you count it up and include Mylo Xyloto, this is a song with FOUR guitar solos. The lyrics are very picturesque and have a great story. Sets the stage of the song and album perfectly. The piano at the end is nice too. I actually like the electronic vocals - it's kind of like what Midnight SHOULD have sounded like with some vocoder/autotuney things. Will has a good backup vocal in the 2nd verse with the "streets are ours" and "don't let em take control" lines. Overall, this song is the best possible intersection between old and new Coldplay. My only other complaint is that the music video did not live up to my expectations..it was too static, and it made the song too short by cutting various chunks out. I wish they would switch Charlie Brown out for HLH sometimes. Even though CB is "fun", I'd argue HLH is just as fun and catchy and energetic. But it's a musically and lyrically superior song I'd say. Oh and how about Will's glockenspiel part in MX?!

Coldplays sexiest song?
The way you phrased it can be taken to mean, without your further clarification, that "as a male I do not get attracted in a romantic or sexual way by other males and this is the truth and default for how males are and should be." Which can be sexist even if you did not intend it. Also, that's not exactly the meaning of feminist. Blue nails was simply calling you out on something that could potentially be interpreted as sexist. Putting aside the fact that feminist does not imply "bad", one does not have to be a feminist or a masculinist to see something and decide to speak out on whether it's biased towards one gender or the other. Anyhow I'll get out of here because I didn't realize what subforum this was in.... waiting for my physical copy. :)
-
Coldplays sexiest song?
I think Magic, Yes, and Another's Arms are very sexy. Haven't listened to the bonus tracks yet. As for sexist...Shiver and Yellow but even then I don't think Coldplay really delves into really gendered things. Which is good.

LP7- "A Head Full Of Dreams"
There's a long history of Coldplay and Noel being friends - most recently Noel gave Chris/Jonny a pedal as detailed in this article by R42 from a while back after Chris performed with Noel Gallagher at the BRIT awards. That said it's not clear whether this pedal was actually used on GS. :( Alex Turner is also a fan.... [video=youtube;d1h2_TygQYM] And in addition to these existing connections, I think Coldplay has a reasonable rock cred from songs like GPASYUF, HLH, Strawberry Swing, Yes, 42, to name a few.

"Atlas" vs. Ghost Stories
The vocals are a bit dry/dead I'll admit, but the piano is really good - quite unique and not sounding like...anything else really. And the slide-ebow combo that Jonny does in the choruses genuinely harks back to Oldplay in a fresh way. Will and Guy have solid contributions of course, and the piano-guitar interplay at the end is really unique and cool sounding - both good lines. Moreover, it just has a sense of 4-dudes playing music that is additionally supplemented by a couple simply electronic things (noises in the choruses, vocal production at the end, atmospherics on the drums).

"Atlas" vs. Ghost Stories
 Atlas is way better than anything on the album except for Midnight, ASFOS, and O.

Oceans
I'm quite angry that Jonny's guitar parts are 0% present on the album version. :( :( :(
-
Another's Arms
Uncanny. I do wonder where the sample is from / who sang though. Absolutely agree with this post. The guitar just doesn't pierce during the solo. It seems like the piano just kinda disappears behind the synths and what sounds like a second electric guitar track. :(
-
Criticisms with the album?
Exactly. I wish there were a couple more guitar solos though. Regarding the lyrics - I think X&Y has way better and deeper lyrics despite both albums being harshly emotional. Compare: What if there was no lie Nothing wrong, nothing right What if there was no time And no reason, or rhyme What if you should decide That you don't want me there by your side That you don't want me there in your life What if I got it wrong And no poem or song Could put right what I got wrong Or make you feel I belong Call it magic Call it true Call it magic When I'm with you And I just got broken Broken into two Still I call it magic When I'm next to you And I don't, and I don't and I don't, and I don't No, I don't, It's true I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't No, I don't, It's true I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't, no, I don't want anybody else but you Though to be fair I do like Magic a lot for other reasons. Though, on a different note, I really don't like that Chris doesn't play piano on Magic live because it's really not a hard part to play and the acoustic only happens for 20 seconds. I think it takes away from the honesty of the performance for this song. (I can understand for ASFOS since Guy plays the piano at the start since it's an ETIAW-like song).

True Love
People call this "scooping" for singing but I'm not sure for guitar. Indeed, I like the solo a lot but I wish the guitar were more present overall. The chord progression is really cool but the strings feel too "full" or present to me... making this and Ink kind of hard to listen to and remember. :(

"O" is gonna be my favorite track!
Yeah same rhythm!! I remember wondering what that would turn out to be.
-
Is Rihanna on this track?
I thought it was Rihanna too but upon relistening it I think it makes more sense for it to be Will. Keep in mind that Mr. Champion sings the brunt of the backing vocals on Viva la Vida. :)
-
"O" is gonna be my favorite track!
I wish I wish I wish it had more guitar. Amsterdam and UWTB and DAAHF are better closers for this reason. The bass and the ambience are great...but some Jonny and Will would've been nice.

Another's Arms
Same. It's very left-heavy and not as piercing as the live version. I wish it would've pierced a bit more, but I guess it lets the bass come through a bit more.
