NZ judge orders 'odd' name change A judge in New Zealand made a young girl a ward of court so that she could change the name she hated - Talula Does The Hula From Hawaii. Judge Rob Murfitt said that the name embarrassed the nine-year-old and could expose her to teasing. He attacked a trend of giving children bizarre names, citing several examples. Officials had blocked Sex Fruit, Keenan Got Lucy and Yeah Detroit, he said, but Number …

She started work on the quiz show when it began in 1982, alongside host Richard Whiteley. When Whiteley died in 2005, she continued to co-present with Des Lynam, who was later replaced by Des O'Connor. Vorderman's announcement comes after O'Connor said on Wednesday that he is also quitting the programme. Countdown was the first programme seen on Channel 4. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/entertainment/7526290.stm I need cheering up now :(

  8. A man has been arrested in south-east London after allegedly having sex with sheep at a farm. The 27-year-old was arrested during a raid on Thursday morning at his home in Dulwich, south-east London, on suspicion of bestiality. It follows several complaints about a man molesting sheep in Botany Bay Lane, Chislehurst, in May and June. A Metropolitan Police spokesman said the man was also held on suspicion of drugs possession with intent to supply. Witnesses reported a man sexually assaulting sheep before running off, often leaving clothing at the scene. It is understood the man was traced after forensic scientists identified DNA recovered from a pair of…

  9. Global White Population to Plummet to Single Digit—Black Population to Double The big population story of the 21st Century is shaping up to be the status reversal of whites and blacks and the Indian baby boom As a percentage of world inhabitants, the white population will plummet to a single digit (9.76%) by 2060 from a high-water mark of 27.98% in 1950. Using 2010 as the base reference, the big gainer in the population derby will be blacks or sub-Sahara Africans. This group will expand almost 133% to 2.7 billion by 2060. By the middle of this century blacks will represent 25.38% of world population, which is up dramatically from the 8.97% they recorded in 1950. …

Audacious rescue deals Farc a blow In an operation of unprecedented audacity, the Colombian security forces have rescued 15 hostages from the hands of the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (Farc). The rescue operation that freed Ingrid Betancourt and 14 other Farc hostages was months in the planning and hinged on a turncoat high in the rebels' ranks. Colombian authorities described it as "an unprecedented operation that will go down in history for its audacity and effectiveness". The initiative has dealt a mortal blow to the left-wing guerrillas' plans to secure the release of hundreds of rebels in prison. "Thank you to the army, from my country of…

I realize there's already a thread for the games, but I started this one for people who may not be so supportive since I didn't want to go storming a thread for people who are looking forward to the games, so please don't merge them for the sake of the ones that will enjoy the Olympics. Having said that, what do you all think about China getting the games? Let me make it clear that I'm not prejudiced against the Chinese people whatsoever, and I don't want to insult our Chinese members. It's the government I take issue with. With a human right record like theirs, and the whole Tibet issue, I personally support a boycott. I know how much it means to our athletes, but I'd…

  12. Faceless 'aliens' spotted in crowd at Wimbledon By Alex Millson Last updated at 11:38 AM on 02nd July 2008 Comments (0) Add to My Stories With the blankest of blank expressions on their faces, these mysterious figures have been popping up in the most unlikely of places. The faceless mutants have a penchant for A-list celebrity bashes and have been spotted at Elton John's White tie ball and Harrods summer sale, opened by Sex and the City star Kim Cattrall. With a membrane of skin stretched tightly over their eyes, noses and mouths, the alien-like figures were most recently snapped 'watching' a match perched on Murray Mount at Wimbledon. Eerie…

Apple's much-hyped iPhone has finally gone on sale in the US. Some people had been queuing for days outside Apple and AT&T stores across the US to ensure they got hold of one of the devices. Hundreds more began queuing during Friday because stores did not start selling the iPhone until 1800 local time (2300 BST). Apple said buyers visiting its stores would not be able to walk out with more than two iPhones each. More than 600 people were outside two Apple stores in New York and at one of them, customers cheered as the doors opened, Reuters news agency said. Similar scenes were reported in other cities. "I've gone through several phones, even th…

Microsoft's development cycles often stretch beyond initial estimates Microsoft boss Bill Gates has dropped a hint about the next version of Windows. He said Windows 7 could be released "sometime in the next year or so" during a Q&A session at a meeting of the Inter-American Development Bank. After the event a Microsoft spokeswoman said the new version was scheduled for 2010 - three years after the January 2007 release of Vista for consumers. But industry experts warned that Microsoft's estimates about delivery dates have often proved optimistic. Long wait Mr Gates made his comments in response to a question from the audience gathered to hear hi…

So, I'm buying a new mobile phone and it HAS to be Nokia. So, from those available I can't decide between models 3500 and 6120. The first one costs roughly 70 euros and the other one 100 euros. I know that Nokia 6120 is more advanced and has this possibility of video calls etc., but at the same time there are functions I probably will never need like viewing .pdf files or sending emails and I know the battery lasts less time than that of model 3500. I really need my phone only for calling people and sending sms messages (occasionally an mms). BUT I really need that calendar option, currency/temperature/etc. converter and groups in phonebook (you know - when yo…

Pete Doherty has been forced to postpone a show in April Babyshambles frontman Pete Doherty has been jailed for 14 weeks for violating his probation and for using drugs. The BBC's David Sillito said the singer had missed one appointment with his probation team and been late for another. The punishment m…

It would be costly to build to plants to convert it but once they're up and running cheap to run and the price of the barrel would be around 30 dollars. One of the articles I read said, in America we had enough coal to power all our vehicles for 250 years.
