Sorry for banging on about this. I'm just interested to see what people thought about it. I thought the acting was really good. The final scenes where the prisoners start praying as they leave the cell and enter the gas chambers were incredibly haunting, as was the way that the people from the past and the present were presented as being in the gas chamber together at the same time. What did people make of the man at the end, and his emphatic conclusion that, "God is not good. He is on Hitler's side (or words to that effect)" ?

And now some boring news from the Andover Advertiser who has nothing better to report on. 'Tesco town' warehouse plan By Steve Dancey A MAMMOTH Tesco warehouse and distribution centre proposed on the western edge of Andover could bring as many as 1,200 extra jobs to the town - but would totally transform the nature of the surrounding area. The proposal, outlined by developers Rosemound, is in its early stages. But if it goes ahead it would see one of Europe's largest buildings erected on a large part of the former Andover Airfield - an area already scheduled for industrial development in the local plan. The new building, around a third of a mile long (1,900ft…

http://www.telegraph.co.uk/news/2667485/Mansion-millionaire-Christopher-Foster-caught-on-CCTV-with-rifle-after-fire-started.html The family at a friend's barbecue hours before Christopher set his own mansion on fire, killing his family, pets, and himself. The film appears to confirm the theory that Mr Foster, who was in deep financial trouble, murdered his wife and daughter, then shot the family's horses and dogs before setting fire to the £1.2million property and turning the gun on himself. Detectives believe Mr Foster, 50, suffered a breakdown triggered by the collapse of his company, and decided to destroy his family home rather than see it sold off to pay c…

Manchester city: the only club in history to be knocked out of the FA Cup by a balloon. Here we present a variant on city's shiny new club crest; the stars are falling off, the ship is sinking, the legend "YCNMIU" ("You Could Not Make It Up" - a fitting motto for our blue brothers if ever there was one) is proudly displayed below and we have two sky or laser blue balloons as the centrepiece, proudly displaying the numbers 3 and 2 in honour of the fact that it will now be at least 32 years during which Manchester city will have won precisely fuck-all. http://www.tshirtsunited.com/catalogue/tshirts/all/32yearscitybadge.html

Barack Obama has selected Sen. Joseph Biden of Delaware to be his vice presidential running mate. Biden, 65, has been a U.S. senator from Delaware since 1973 and is no stranger to presidential politics. He ran for president in the 1988 campaign and again in this cycle, withdrawing from his first bid amid accusations he had plagiarized passages in campaign speeches and ending his campaign this year after failing to gain support in early races. He's considered one of the leading Democrats on foreign affairs issues and is chairman of the Senate Foreign Relations Committee. Biden voted for the Iraq war in 2002 but subsequently became a major critic of the war effort. He…

Beijing Games come up short on soul By Jeff Schultz | Saturday, August 23, 2008, 05:00 PM The Atlanta Journal-Constitution Beijing — The first time Charles Lee came to China in 1979, there wasn’t a great preoccupation with impressing people. Beijing hadn’t been blanketed with flower pots. Teenage girls didn’t run 50 feet through rain storms to hand you an umbrella. Natives didn’t stop white people in the middle of Tiananmen Square, merely to take their picture and ask, “What do you think of our country?” “There was one road into town,” said Lee, a former Los Angeles judge who was instrumental in China’s inclusion in the 1984 Olympics and now a USOC official. “…

Wow, I'm still a bit shocked... I was watching Friday's night Bundesliga match between Karlsruhe and Cologne with some of my friends when suddenly Ümit Özat (Turkey) collapsed right on the pitch. It's so horrible! :( At minute 24 he suddenly lost his consciousness. Mercifully the ambulance men could help him and he's now in hospital. It seems that Özat will survive according to the media. Cologne's coach moved to tears afterwards and players of both teams have been asked by the referee to continue the match or not. Both agreed. Not for the faint-hearted... :( http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xg9-687FGs0 Yet another example that there are more importa…

I've been using Freewebs for about 5 years, I had a website there when I was younger and I don't use that but I still have the account so I can upload pictures. It's getting a little annoying though cause they keep changing their layout, it's not very quick, and I can only upload one picture at a time. I don't need to upload whole albums, it's just odds and ends like my avatars here or scans of magazine pages and stuff.

The bank apologised to Mr Jetley in a statement A man who chose "Lloyds is pants" as his telephone banking password said he found it had been changed by a member of staff to "no it's not". Steve Jetley, from Shrewsbury, said he chose the password after falling out with Lloyds TSB over insurance that came free with an account. He said he was then banned from changing it back or to another password of "Barclays is better". The bank apologised and said the staff member no longer worked there. Mr Jetley said he first realised his security password had been changed when a call centre staff member told him his code word did not match with the one on the compu…

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/in_depth/7582181.stm The Russian president has said the country has formally recognised the breakaway Georgian regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia as independent. Dmitry Medvedev announced that he had signed decrees in a televised address. The move follows a vote in both houses of Russian parliament on Monday, calling on him to recognise the regions' status. It comes despite criticism from US President George W Bush over Russia's decision. "I have signed decrees on the recognition by the Russian Federation of the independence of South Ossetia and the independence of Abkhazia," Mr Medvedev said in the announcement. Analys…

A MAN is lucky to still have a penis after he inserted it in a metal park bench and became stuck, doctors say. At least a dozen police and emergency services workers were called to the park in Hong Kong after 41-year-old Le Xing’s penis became trapped in a hole, apparently after he became aroused. According to reports from Hong Kong, the “lonely and disturbed” Mr Xing told police he thought it would be fun to have sex with the bench, UK’s The Telegraph reported. Here for a video: http://www.news.com.au/story/0,23599,24174888-23109,00.html

Los Angeles puts poor part of city on diet with fast food restaurant ban in obesity fight By Daily Mail Reporter Last updated at 2:55 PM on 30th July 2008 Comments (0) Add to My Stories Fast food restaurants are banned in a part of Los Angeles for a year. The city's council voted for the year-long moratorium to give the city time to attract restaurants that serve healthier food. No more restaurants such as McDonald's will allowed to set up in the area, which is deprived and has a high number of these eateries and an above average rate of obesity. The action, which the mayor must still sign into law, is believed to be the first of its …

MIDDLEBURY, Vt. -- The college presidents said they wanted a national debate on the 21-year-old drinking age. They got it. For years, former Middlebury College President John McCardell has been criticizing the law, saying it only encourages binge drinking and pushes alcohol into the shadows. But then McCardell quietly enlisted about 100 college presidents in a campaign calling for the drinking age to be reconsidered. After The Associated Press reported on the effort this week, the issue erupted into the biggest discussion on the subject in years - in blogs, over e-mail, in newspaper editorials and around office water coolers. College presidents usually avoid cont…
