  1. Comissioners will be elected to hold the police to account, not run local police forces Police commissioner elections report low turnout The first police and crime commissioners have been elected, as concerns are raised about low turnout in parts of England and Wales. Numerous areas have confirmed turnouts ranging from 13-20%. Elections expert Professor John Curtice said it could be the worst turnout ever but Downing Street said people needed time to get used to the idea of PCCs. So far, Tories have won in Wiltshire and Dyfed-Powys, and Labour candidates in Northumbria and Merseyside. Police and crime commisoners will have powers to hire and fire chief consta…

Verizon has said it will first warn repeat offenders by email and voicemail. Then it will restrict or "throttle" their internet connection speeds. Time Warner Cable, another US internet service provider (ISP) pledging to tackle piracy, says it will use pop-up warnings to deter repeat offenders. After that it will restrict subscribers' web browsing activities by redirecting them…

  3. Illegal downloaders are likely to be monitored "within hours" BitTorrent study finds most file-sharers are monitored Anyone using file-sharing service BitTorrent to download the latest film or music release is likely to be monitored, UK-based researchers suggest. A Birmingham University study indicates that an illegal file-sharer downloading popular content would be logged by a monitoring firm within three hours. The team said it was "surprised" by the scale of the monitoring. Copyright holders could use the data to crack down on illegal downloads. The three-year research was carried out by a team of computer scientists who developed software that acted like a…

Data traffic will grind to a halt unless more capacity is added to mobile networks Data jam threat to UK mobile networks Steps need to be taken now to head off a looming "capacity crunch" on the UK's mobile networks, says regulator Ofcom. As more people use broadband-connected smartphones and tablets, the amount of data Britons consume on the move each month has hit 20 million gigabytes. The main reason for the data explosion is users' love of video, TV and films while on the move. Without swift action, mobile networks will gradually grind to a halt, warned the agency. If current trends play out, said Ofcom, demand for mobile data would grow by 80 times by 203…

George Entwistle said his position was untenable after a day of humiliation in which he admitted knowing nothing of a Newsnight investigation which led to Lord McAlpine being falsely named as a child abuser - and nothing of it unravelling. He has lasted just 54 days in the job. Mr Entwistle’s decision plunges the BBC into its deepest-ever crisis and leaves it leaderless at a time of mounting questions over its journalism. The director-general was dealt the final blow when Lord Patten was directly challenged to issue a vote of confidence earlier tonight - and refused. Mr Entwistle, 50, had to accept responsibility for blunder after blunder which culminated in …

  11. Megaupload following Pirate Bay to great big server in the sky Megaupload has ascended to the heavens. The file-sharing giant is moving away from traditional, physical servers to The Cloud. Whether that means the FBI and RIAA will attempt some sort of foolhardy air raid is yet to be seen. The move itself comes on the heels of a similar announcement from The Pirate Bay. Megaupload boss Kim Dotcom — “lovable” rapscallion and thorn in the recording industry’s side — has given the new service the name “Mega” (I wonder how they thought of that one). Mega is described as a “unique tool that will solve the liability problems faced by cloud storage services,” according t…

I have a blackberry curve, I had it password locked/protected. One of my friends keeps guessing and says "what will happen after all the attempts are taken?" So I say "I dunno, it'll lock?" -assuming it would. Then after typing every Coldplay-included word in, the screen goes white and says wiping. I've got all my pictures, songs and videos and some contacts. However I've lost all BBM (blackberry messenger) contacts, some phone contacts, all notes and calendar reminders -_- Does anyone know how I can get those back? P.S. I keep reading about back-up stuff, but to be honest I don't know what that is and so haven't done it. Thanks

A deal setting out terms for a Scottish independence referendum has been signed by Prime Minister David Cameron and First Minister Alex Salmond. The agreement, struck in Edinburgh, has paved the way for a vote in autumn 2014, with a single Yes/No question on Scotland leaving the UK. It will also allow 16 and 17-year-olds to take part in the ballot. The SNP secured a mandate to hold the referendum after its landslide Scottish election win last year. The UK government, which has responsibility over constitutional issues, will grant limited powers to the Scottish Parliament to hold a legal referendum, under a mechanism called Section 30. The deal will also com…
