New John Legend album runs musical gamut

Singer John Legend's upcoming new album will feature a variety of musical styles, Rolling Stone reported in New York.

The set will have tracks influenced by '60s AM radio pop songs as well as fellow singer Jeff Buckley, the magazine said, produced by artists such as Kanye West and Craig Street.

Legend told the magazine of his experiences with musical icon Stevie Wonder, including an incident in which he says he became ill after ingesting a secret concoction Wonder uses to maintain his own singing voice.

Rolling Stone said that when the 26-year-old's Once Again album is released later this year, his fans will still appreciate his trademark piano-based mellow soul -- but will be surprised by the album's musical diversity.

John Legend: Music that makes you feel good

John Legend returns with his sophomore release "Once Again."

Because of his vast success off his debut album "Get Lifted," fans across the world expected great things from "Once Again." This album lives up to the high expectations, and John Legend delivers another soulful hit.

While having my weekly listening session, it was evident that John Legend's style has changed a bit; his usual love concept album is the same. However, his tone of voice changes from track to track. His changing voice gives the album more of an alternative rock feel. He still has a soulful voice; it's just laced with a little Maroon 5.

The lead single "Save Room" strays from his usual soulful, R&B feel and ventures into the realm of alternative rock. This radio friendly single succeeds, and Legend shows his range as a musician. If you're into Coldplay or groups similar, you will love this track.

Legend returns to his soulful beginnings with the track "Slow Dance." This track brings the listener back to the days of Marvin Gaye and Al Green. It brings that "good" feeling back to a time of so much negativity in music. His passion is evident while his voice blesses every minute of this four-minute track.

The song "Again" is a beautifully produced track where Legend speaks of his constant infidelity in relationships and the ups and downs of a relationship. He sings "I love you but this is crazy. I have to fight you almost daily. We break off so fast; we, then we make up so passionately. Why can't we just trust each other. You can't hate me and be my lover."

John Legend does a great job of using personal stories that many everyday people go through in their own lives. By doing this, he creates musical masterpieces which contain situations that most of us have been through. By creating songs that a listener can relate to their own life, John Legend in turn appeals to a larger market of fans.

The track "Coming Home" is one of those songs that gives you goose bumps. From the kind piano, to the exceptional strings, this song sums up the meaning of this album. This song defines a relationship that didn't work out, but both people know that they truly belong together.

He sings "It may be long to get me there, feels like I've been everywhere, but someday I'll be coming home. Round and round the world will spin. Oh, this earth will never end. So you know that I'll be coming home."

His passion is highlighted is every track, and John Legend never falls short of his high expectations.

Legend's sophomore release "Once Again" is an instant classic. If you want music that makes you feel good inside, I suggest picking up "Once Again" by John Legend.

I don't dispute that JL is hugely talented, but I'm afraid I also find his voice a bit on the bland side. It doesn't really do anything for me.;)

^same here. i didn't like "save room", first single of his new album, at first but now i'm enjoying it....i'm curious to know how the rest of the new album is!

John Legend Sheet Music Request

Hi Guys,

I'm trying to track down the sheet music for a tune by Mr. Legend called "It Don't Have to Change". Its from the album "Get Lifted" and is in the sheet music book for it.

Does anyone happen to have a scanned copy they can hook me up with? I'll return the favour somehow!

I searched the forum for this guy, but all that came up was John Lennon/Mayer.

Excellent piano-driven melodies and a beautiful voice.

John Stephens (born December 28, 1978), better known by his stage name John Legend, is an American recording artist, musician and actor. He is the recipient of six Grammy Awards, and in 2007, he received the special Starlight award from the Songwriters Hall of Fame.[1]

Prior to the release of his debut album, Legend's career gained momentum through a series of successful collaborations with multiple established artists. Legend added his voice to those of other artists, assisting in them reaching chart-topper hits. He lent his voice to that of Kanye West, on Slum Village's "Selfish", and Dilated Peoples' "This Way". Other artists included Jay-Z's "Encore", and sang backing vocals on Alicia Keys' 2003 song "You Don't Know My Name" and Fort Minor's "High Road." Legend played piano on Lauryn Hill's "Everything Is Everything."
