Has Chris Martin lost his ability to write good lyrics?

Featured Replies

Forgive me, but I have listened to this album a number of times and the lyrics seem so predictable, detatched and abstract. With the exception of Fix You or Talk, I feel that Martin kind of mailed in these lyrics. It seems he leaned more on the atmosphere and sound of the song then the lyrical content in this album. So, I listened through Parachutes, AROBTH, and X&Y and there is nothing on this album that connects like Amsterdam, Sparks, Warning Sign or even We Never Change. The lyrics just seems forced (Swallowed In The Sea) and really makes the album seem souless and devoid of any real themes. I don't want to be overtly negative, but it just seems that this album suffers a lot from Martin's inability to connect on paper. Am I wrong? Should I just not put that high expectations on lyrics?

... sorry, but i couldn't disagree w/ you more

...oh, and reilly, you're hysterical lol

X&Y and Twisted Logic has some of the best lyrics ever.

Oh my God FIx You is so goregeous. I'm crying so much listening to it. Seriously I'm not lying. It's making me flippin cry! I need a tissue... Its all so sensitive...

Best lyrics ever. Piss on the naysayers.

I don't think so. I think he's a great song writer. Sometimes he does write shit, but other times he writes some of the best lyrics I've ever heard. Take The Scientist and Amsterdam for example.

I just think he's more mature now he has

a wife and a kid and therefore cannot

aloways sing about unrequited love

hehehe I love the new lyrics

I like the new lyrics. :)

They're great as on the other two albums. :D

i agree with the above. chris martin is my buddha

I don't neccesarily focus on lyrics too much because I am more of a music person (even though I'm currently writing lyrics for my own musical project...). The music on X&Y is amazing.

where did you all get the albumn from?

Your right. He sucks.

you're crazy.. i don't get it, you hate the new album, but you still come here :)

You can hate the album but still like Coldplay`s other work.

Reilly, if you are as smart and important as your pretend to be, how can you possibly have enough time on your hands to perpetually be on the message board of a band you don't like?

^ Reilly was joking :dozey:

where did you all get the albumn from?

Are you serious?

the name of this topic is why i try not to come here anymore. *headdesk*

Has Chris Martin lost his ability to write good lyrics?...

...NO! :P

Haha, I'm gonna try to be a bit controversial here- "Lost his ability to write good lyrics"? What ability? I didn't even know he had that ability... Wasn't apparent in Parachutes, neither was it on AROBTTH, so of course not on this album :o :D

Neways, I love bands for their music, the lyrics are just part of it... so they're never a factor at all. They could be just yapping rubbish and woohooing throughout the album for all I care (which btw, I think would be a great concept for an album) In general, Coldplay lyrics tend to complement the emotion the songs are meant to convey rather than the other way round. That's why Chris has so many alternate lyrics to the songs.

But seriously, listen closely to the lyrics of X&Y... Although there are repeat topics / phrases e.g. outer space, loud noises, and other non-sense... These words are the ones that stand out coz we've all heard them before. Many of the more meaningful (and good lyrics) are cocooned in the loud songs where Chris' singing is not so clear so it's harder to hear...
