The Underrated Artists Thread

Featured Replies

I thought I'd start this thread to allow people to give a mention to Acts, past or present whom they feel have never received the credit they deserve. For me these artists include:

1. Mazzy Star - I think Hope Sandoval has one of the most beautiful, haunting voices I have ever heard. Check out the album "So Tonight That I Might See" to hear what I mean.

2. Neva Dinova - If there has been a song more beautiful than "Did You Disappoint Your God?" recorded by any other artist, I have yet to hear it.

That's it for now but I'm sure there are many others deserving of a mention.

You can add Mercury Rev to my list above. Jonathan Donahue's voice may not be to everyones liking but Mercury Rev do make some beautiful innovative music IMO.

i would say that one of the most underrated bands now is definitely The Fray...their music is so amazing, and to top it all of, they are huge fans of coldplay!!!! too bad no one knows who they are... :/

Brandnew and james blunt

James Blunt is talked about everywhere, I am sick of it.

still underated....no matter how much he's talked about. no matter what godo things are said about him...He's one of the all time greatest singer/song writers in my book.

I'm sure many of the UK posters will disagree with me (because they don't know how good they have it when it comes to music their radio stations play! :D ), but here in the US the most underrated bands are Bloc Party, Athlete, and Hard Fi. I'll even say Keane is very underrated in the US.

^ Have to agree with you, CaptainOats, the US ignores most of the best bands out there and chooses to promote crap. I personally think that Guster and Spoon are really underrated.

He is outrageously over-rated here in the UK, he's bloody EVERYWHERE. With his whiny, squeaky, and quite frankly, painful-to-listen-to voice.

I originally thought it was a girl singing!! I'm quite tired of you're beautiful, but his other songs are great...

I second that, greeneyes810. Ben Folds is sooooo freakin' talented! :)

his voice is amazing.

Damien Rice is an amazing singer/songwriter who imo doesnt get anywhere near the credit he's due for his work. His album "O" remains a constant favourite in my cd collection, there's not a weak track on it.

Athlete are another very talented but largely underrated band imo.

Guster

I like them. More people should listen to their stuff.

I was listening to Gomez a little while ago and realised that they are very much under appreciated, at least here in the UK they are.

Mogwai MOGWAI MOGWAIIIIIII!!!!!!!!

ahem.

carry on.

greeneyes810, saintcity, i agree with ben folds. but i thought his work with ben folds five was better. absolutely LOVE their music.

shesawsparks, i agree with damien rice, especially here in australia. i absolutely adore his album 'o' and i must agree, not a weak track on it.

i would say 'the cat empire' are a VERY underrated band - they are australian after all but they are an absolutely amazing band. very different to the type of music people listen to here i'm assuming, but they are an absolutely class act live, AMAZING!

Our lady peace

they're canadian and they're very good, but i dont think they're known that much

doves are great, no one klnows em in the us but theyre popular in the uk arent they well like somewhat popular they got a #2 single. as for james blunt....over rated, annoying voice, bad song, dumb video. thank you

OH and oasis in the us,they should be bigger over heere, one of my favorite bands.

in the US, bloc party is definitely not underrated, it is the opposite.

And Doves is pretty well out there, they are compared to Coldplay.

hmm

Nick Drake's guitar skills are wonderful

Feist....and Kings of Convenience, the other band she is in

Mogwai is pretty out there

I still think MORE people need to listen to Elliott Smith...there is not enough love for his amazing voice, compliation, composition, or guitar expertise..and so on

and everyone here agress that Damien Rice is really really good, so he gets off the list. Maybe it was a vague way to put it. I s it like underrated as in, in your area, or on a whole? Or how is someone spossed to calculate that?
