The Offical Top Gear Thread

I bet most of the complaints have come from the "I didn't watch the show in question, but I've heard they said something bad" daily mail reading mob.

Well it's true that people now seem to be getting offended "by proxy". It's ridiculous.

The same thing happened with that Jonathan Woss/Russell Brand affair.:dozey:

Isn't Jonathan Ross on TG tonight?

anyway I didn't particularly find the jokes funny they made about Mexicans but I do think that this whole thing has been taken too seriously.

That's happening way too often nowadays, unfortunately.:(

The Mexicans should act like the Aussies, some of those jokes in last week's episode aimed towards the Aussies were a lot worst than the Mexican stuff.

Very true indeed!

Just out of curiosity, Mark what is your opinion on this because that hasn't been made clear a billion times.

I'm not disagreeing with people who said the comments wern't funny-they wern't but I find the amount of fuss and political correctness surrounding the topic a bit much.

I agree there, and things get blown out of proportion when the media decides to do so, but I find this kind of humour to be shit so I really don't mind people getting pulled up for childish antics.

BBC’s Mexican wave: Auntie cuts Top Gear‘s ‘outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable’ jokes that offended ambassador for U.S. broadcast

Scenes in which Top Gear presenters Jeremy Clarkson, Richard Hammond and James May poked fun at Mexicans will be cut before the show is broadcast in the United States next week.

The Mexican ambassador complained to the BBC about the 'outrageous, vulgar and inexcusable insults' made on the show.

Hammond joked that Mexican cars reflected national characteristics, saying they were 'just going to be lazy, feckless, flatulent'.

article-0-0D0F7D04000005DC-921_468x286.jpg 'Casual racism': Top Gear presenters Richard Hammond, Jeremy Clarkson and James May have attracted approbation for their comments about Mexicans

Also in the show, May described Mexican food as 'like sick with cheese on it' and Clarkson predicted they would not get any complaints about the show because 'at the Mexican embassy, the ambassador is going to be sitting there with a remote control like this (snores). They won't complain, it's fine'.

The corporation wrote to His Excellency Eduardo Medina-Mora Icaza to say it was sorry if the programme, broadcast on January 30, caused offence.

But it claimed national stereotyping was part of British humour and the remarks were akin to labelling Italians as disorganised and over-dramatic, the French as arrogant and the Germans as over-organised.

A BBC spokeswoman said today: 'Top Gear episodes are routinely edited for international transmission, both to fit broadcasters' time slots and for rights reasons.'

The show also came under fire from comedian Steve Coogan who said the trio were guilty of 'casual racism'.

The show is broadcast on the BBC America channel and a US version of the show recently began on The History Channel.
