Tnspieler1012
^ that video. Both the beginning where he scares the producers with the 'rape me' riff, and especially the end where Novoselic's guitar hits him in the head, Kurt is busy wailing on the amp, and Dave Grohl is like "hi Axel! hi Axel! where's Axel? Gilda
What’s wrong with the business of Nirvana? What’s wrong with the business of Nirvana? Since Courtney Love sold licensing rights for the grunge-rock band’s catalog, takers have been few and far between. Three years ago, actress-rocker Courtney Love claimed to have just $4,000 in her bank account. She said she was thinking about applying for food stamps. Instead, she struck upon a simple solution: cash in on her rights to the song catalog of her deceased husband, grunge-era icon Kurt Cobain, Nirvana’s frontman. But the deal—in which Love sold a 50 percent interest in Cobain’s music-publishing rights for a reported $50 million—outraged Cobain’s antiestablishment fans. They criticized Love for using Cobain’s music to promote the kinds of commercial interests he denounced until his suicide 15 years ago. If the revenue generated so far by the licenses is any indication, there’s less of a market than fans imagined. According to estimates from music, advertising, and videogame-industry analysts, the buyer, Primary Wave Music Publishing—which also controls publishing rights for such acts as Hall and Oates and Greg Allman—has earned slightly more than $2.3 million on Nirvana licenses. That’s relatively low compared with other rock and pop groups. When the makers of the videogame Guitar Hero struck a deal with Primary Wave, it was only for “Breed,” one of Nirvana’s biggest hits, which probably brought in about $50,000, estimates one industry expert. By comparison, they wanted 24 of Aerosmith’s most popular tunes and paid $5 million for them. Over the past three years, Primary Wave has licensed 13 Nirvana songs to film and television productions for an estimated $480,000. Tween heartthrobs the Jonas Brothers scored about $1 million for 105 licenses sold to film and television shows in 2008 alone. The main reason sales have been slow is that Nirvana’s music is less commercially adaptable than that of other rock acts. The sound and lyrics embody generational angst and are not exactly ready-made to sell pop-culture trinkets. “Nirvana was so revolutionary that it’s very difficult to match different projects, and there are tons of iconic groups that allow their music to be utilized,” explains Sony/ATV Music Publishing chairman and CEO Martin Bandier, who manages catalogs for bands ranging from the Jonas Brothers to the Beatles. In retrospect, it looks like Primary Wave, which shares revenue from licensing deals with Love, may have had unrealistic expectations. Back in 2006, the company’s chief executive, Larry Mestel, initiated heavily publicized talks with the TV series CSI: Miami to feature several Nirvana songs in an episode written around the music. But once Primary Wave and the Nirvana team (including Love, former band members, and their recording label) asked for a sum “twice the industry standard,” CBS backed off. “The whole deal kind of imploded,” says a source involved in the talks. Mestel declined to comment for this story. For her part, Love has been busy working on projects to keep the Cobain name alive and currently serves as an executive producer for a new Cobain biopic being written by David Benioff. Love and her daughter, Frances Bean, who was a year old at the time of Cobain’s death, have put their food-stamp worries behind them. Frances Bean, now 16, was spotted last year checking out a $6.5 million penthouse in New York where she could live with her mom. Eagle131
I respect Nirvana and Cobain. Their music is good. I really like Smells Like Teen Spirit, and I don't really care about what everyone else says. Its a damn good tune with a damn good message! The band is overrated and underrated. Tnspieler1012
The "Classic albums - Nirvana: Nevermind" DVD is excellent. My sister got my brother (whose a die-hard fan) the "Live! Tonight! Sold out!" DVD and he thought was really so-so. They had several clips of Kurt just puposefully screwing up his own songs. For example he messed around with the tuning pegs before playing "Come as you are", which was funny for no more than the first ten seconds. But the Unplugged in New York concert is great... Gilda
Nirvana Catalog To Be Re-Released On Vinyl Nirvana Catalog To Be Re-Released On Vinyl The bulk of Nirvana's catalog is set for a high-fidelity do-over this year as the Original Recordings Group (ORG) prepares to release "Nevermind," "In Utero," and "MTV Unplugged" on 180-gram, audiophile quality vinyl for the first time ever. All three records will be released in 2009, with "Nevermind" coming first, says Monti Olson, a senior VP of Universal Music Publishing Group/Interscope Records and founder of ORG, who will announce the deal at South By Southwest tomorrow (March 21). "Bernie Grubman remastered the recordings specifically for us," Olson said. "To our knowledge this is the first time "Unplugged" has ever come out on vinyl. They might have done a limited promotional thing but I dobut it." Olson, who started ORG in 2006 with his own money as a "groovy little vinyl imprint," had to pitch Universal to give him the rights to the storied Nirvana catalog. "We spoke to Mike Davis at UME who we do a lot of business with and he thought it was a great idea," he said. "Ultimately [Nirvana's management] Michael Meisel and John Silva approved it. We had worked with them on Beck's "Odelay Deluxe" project and they thought we were the right company to do something this special." "Bleach," Nirvana's first album, is currently being manufactured for vinyl release by Sub Pop. ORG has the North American rights to the vinyl releases, and sell them through a variety of one-stops and online retailers. The vinyl business, according to Olson, is growing. "We have some new accounts that are experimenting with vinyl, like Best Buy. I don't know how strong their initiative is, but they've alotted a little bit of floor space for vinyl. "But the bulk of the vinyl in the retail space goes through independent stores - the Amoebas and the Waterloos of the world that have always been in the vinyl business. But what's happening is more and more people are coming in with a curiosity about buying record albums." ORG originally began with old jazz and classical reissues, but last year launched a "Classic Alternative" division with the Beck and a TV on the Radio release. "We're going to be releasing a lot of classic alternative music from the 80s and 90s on 180 gram vinyl. Stuff that's more obscure and more popular. We're in negotiation with quite a few of those artists," he said. "They're the best sounding records on the market," Olson says with the excitement of a true plastic fanatic. "We spend $15 per LP on manufacturing. That's an enormous expense, but it shows in the final product, it shows by our sales, it shows by our growing customer base."
