Dont like the title at all but hey, if the music's good. Though I must admit even though I was pretty confident this record would be amazing throughout the last few years, it's only now where I'm getting quite worried.

Wow, I had Viva La Vida as my name on msn since the video.

I knew it would mean something significant somewhere down the line :D

That's kinda cool, Im glad we at least hav the information.

the next move is a featuring from enrique iglesias ?

but imagine if ricky martin had never had released that stupid song and coldplay were some brand new indie band....then no one would have doubts over it. people would probably be like, "wow, cool! so edgy".

ricky martin or not,the title is GAY as hell

I woke up this morning expecting to find that this had all been a bad dream.

Viva La Shit Face

Oh, and I'm currently in my fourth year of Spanish in college, and "Viva La Vida" definitely translates as "Live The Life", not "Long Live Life". "Long Live Life" would be "La Vida Vive", or "the life lives on". Perhaps my Spanish is rusty, someone who is fluent can correct me if I'm wrong.

I translated the album title into English and it simply means 'Live Life'.

"VIVA LA VIDA" can accutally be translated to mean ''Live Life", or "Live the Life" it doesnt mean "long live life", they might as well change there name to la coldplay[/b]

Oh my god. This needs to be cleared up.

I was born and raised in Spain and Spanish is my mother tongue. I can assure you all that the first meaning that comes to the mind of any Spanish speaker when hearing "Viva la vida" ISN'T Live Life. Yes, the other meaning that could have is the one you said, but it's written in an archaic way and that's why people wouldn't think about it, nowadays.

(Usted) viva la vida. --> This sounds horrible. Usted is the way I would address to an authority or someone important. It puts distance between people and I see it quite cold.

I read that someone said that Viva la vida meaning "Long live life" makes no sense but it DOES. As long as it means something "Long live the Queen/ our team / etc etc" or whatever else to you, Long live life does make sense.

I was born and raised in Mexico City.

There are a couple of things to say about the title.

Viva La Vida can have different meanings, but i dont know what was Chris' interpretation about it cus it depends on how it was translated to him

One meaning could be if you use it as follow: Sir, you should live (the) life. Just Oenona said.

I think Long Live Life is totally correct, because coming from Frida Kahlo, and as you already know she was Mexican, Viva La Vida has a meaning such as "Hurray For Life", or for example if you say "Viva Coldplay" it would be something like "Cheers for Coldplay", "Hurray for Coldplay"

The local meaning of "Viva (whatever you want)" is like exclaiming something, like shouting and celebrating it

I dont know if you get my point lol

And finally, here it is a picture from last year when Coldplay came to Mexico City. The picture was taken outside Frida Kahlo´s house which nowadays is a museum. Chris bought 3 books about her paintings and her life.

yes, I second that. Long Live Life is correct and has a meaning (and more than one).

Well, I suppose that must be the meaning they actually wanted to give to it. :)

Viva La Vida - hmm, well assuming that really is the title of the new album, i quite like it! :) But of course the most important thing is the music, and i can't wait to hear the new material they've got in store for us!!!! :D

Some articles are popping up already.

Band reveal title and release date of fourth album

19 Mar 2008 - Chris Martin has announced that Coldplay’s new album will be entitled Viva La Vida and it will be released on June 16th.

According to an interview with Rolling Stone, Martin chose the phrase – which means “long live life” – after seeing it on a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

Kahlo died in 1954, but her work – especially her self-portraits – found a huge mainstream audience in the 1980s. But it was her suffering (she endured polio and constant back pain after damaging her spine) that inspired the singer to pay tribute to her.

“She went through a lot of s***, of course,” Martin explained, “And then she started a big painting in her house that said ‘Viva la Vida’. I just loved the boldness of it.”

In addition, Martin was quick to deny any connection between the name of the album and Ricky Martin's 1999 hit La Vida Loca.

“Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect,” Martin claimed, “I’ve been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that ‘That’s a terrible name’.

“But then saying, ‘Well, f**k you, that’s what it’s called, and I’ll be proved to be right eventually’. So when Viva la Vida came along, I was kind of annoyed because I’m going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right.”

Coldplay will headlining a new Canadian festival on July 25-27 in Pemberton, British Columbia. The first-ever Pemberton Festival also include Interpol, Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, Nine Inch Nails, Jay-Z and The Flaming Lips.

Chris Martin finally confirms title of fourth record

Coldplay have finally named their new album, which will be released on June 16.

The record, the band's fourth, will be called 'Viva la Vida' – meaning long live life – after frontman Chris Martin saw the phrase on a painting by Mexican artists Frida Kahlo, Rolling Stone reports.

“She went through a lot of shit, of course, and then she started a big painting in her house that said 'Viva la Vida',” explained Martin of the choice. “I just loved the boldness of it.”

It had been rumoured before that the album would be called 'Prospekt', something Coldplay quickly denied.

Martin admitted that the title he has settled on does have other connotations other than the celebrated artists, perhaps most infamously pop star Ricky Martin.

“Everyone thinks it comes from Ricky Martin, which is fine. I have absolute respect,” explained Martin. “I've been through this before, naming something or someone and everyone saying that 'That’s a terrible name'. But then saying, 'Well, fuck you, that's what it's called, and I'll be proved to be right eventually'. So when 'Viva la Vida' came along, I was kind of annoyed because I'm going to have to try and convince everybody of this, but it just felt right.”

The tracklisting for the album is yet to be confirmed, but tracks believed to be in contention include 'Lovers In Japan' and 'Strawberry Swing'.
