VLVODAAHF has the power to convert haters!! (Details inside!)

Featured Replies

One of my best friends, let's call him Johnny-boy, is an avid hater of anything Coldplay. I don't know what it is that he hates about them, but he claims that Yellow annoyed him to death. His hatred for Coldplay only grew over the years. He didn't like Clocks or the Scientist, or any of their other hits. I tried to open him up to their music a couple of times, trying to get him to listen to the other lesser-known songs, but he would just refuse, proclaiming that Coldplay was the worst band EVER!!! It's kind of odd...his extreme dislike for them. After all, he's a musician and he should be more open minded towards music! PLUS!! While he has overall good taste in music, he really loves some awful stuff (of the emo variety...yuck!) What's even stranger is that he LOVES all these Coldplay-inspired/rip-off bands out there: The Fray, Aqualung, Keane, etc....anyway, on to the point.

So, finally, we come to the year 2008. Violet Hill has just been released. It's not ENTIRELY different from their other stuff, but it's definitely signaling a new direction for Coldplay...one that includes new experimentation not present in their previous work. So, I decided to test out a theory. Would this new song be able to convert one of the greatest Coldplay haters in the whole world? I got in contact with Johnny-boy via instant messaging, and asked him to give it a try. He did. He liked it! I couldn't believe it!! His actual response was, "If the rest of their new album is along these lines, I may become a fan."

I was ecstatic! This was a great sign! Coldplay's new song won over one of the strongest haters of their music!! Little did I know Round Two was soon to come...

Viva La Vida came out of nowhere, but I found it to be even BETTER than Violet Hill (in my opinion)! I sent it to Johnny-boy to see what he thought. I was afraid he might not like it, as it really was a completely different song from VH. Once again, I was pleasantly surprised!! His response was as follows:

"Dammit!!! I like this!! I guess this means I like Coldplay now..."

So, ladies and gentlemen, VLVODAAHF has the power to convert even the most avid haters of Coldplay! You may be thinking, 'wow, this post was very long and completely unecessary...what's your problem?' Well...the truth is...it might be unecessary, but I figured after all the negative posts about how Coldplay is 'coming to an end' and how their new songs are awful or 'not different enough' it was about damn time we got some more positive feedback!!

Also...I figured any other stories of this variety would be fun to read!! So, if you have any stories about recently converted Coldplay haters...post 'em here!!

.....and I'm sorry this post is so long.....OH, and also, just in case anyone took me mentioning Aqualung, Keane, and the Fray as insulting them, I would like to state that I am a fan of all three. But, let's face it, it's obvious where they got their 'inspiration' ;)

i'll support all the people and love them who like coldplay.

i'll not diss them.

well dissing some one is always wrong!

A couple of my Coldplay-hating friends rather love Violet Hill.

Infact one of them is trying to out-do me on how many times she can listen to Violet Hill.

However another of my friends has decided he's not going to like VLVODAAHF because he thinks Coldplay have become too "commercialised" I tried to make him see sense but to no avail.

I guess the converters are going to kind of balance out.

I think you might be on to something here. I live with a Coldplay hater. He's never liked anything they did or anything in that general genre. So I played him Violet Hill and he said - wow that sounds Pink Floydesque - and that may not sound like much but for him to say that was HUGE. And then when I played him ASARY he actually said - damn that's pretty good. So I'd say this could very well hold true for others as well.

I think Chris was right...you better leave the planet if you don't like Coldplay because Coldplay are taking over the world!

:dance::dance::dance:

Yeh, your right, you can notice it all around the internet too such as the comments on youtube. Allthough there are still people who hate coldplay, funny how nothing constructive comes from them though, just 'coldplay are boring@@@@ zzzzzzzzzzzzz@@@@' when they most likely have not even listened to more than 5 of their songs.

One of the DJ's on Kerrang! radio said he never liked anything Coldplay done but he said VH was 'dark and amazing' and saying he loved the song.

The future is looking bright for Coldplay ;)

I dont see the point on getting fans onside who hated early coldplay, it proves nothing except how the band had to change to find new fans.

Dont worry about the Coldplay haters...worry about us Coldplay fans who are becoming haters. If this album is making us stray....it wont convert new fans.

It's not about getting fans on our side...it's just saying that the songs are good enough that people who haven't liked Coldplay in the past are enjoying them now. Coldplay are changing to not only find new fans, but because they want to. They were tired of being labeled as a certain type of band and they wanted to break free of past restraints to show that they too could do new things and grow musically.

Come on, yo, I'm just trying to be optimistic and keep everyone's hopes up! If someone who hated Coldplay in the past is becoming a fan as a result of their music and it allows them to go back and see their older stuff in a new light, then I consider that a VERY good thing!

EDIT: As a side note, if Bob Dylan hadn't changed it up, then we would have never received Highway 61 Revisited or Blonde on Blonde, which are widely considered to be his best albums. The Beatles could have kept doing the same 'lovey-dovey' stuff their whole careers, but they wanted to get BETTER. This resulted in Rubber Soul, Revolver, Sgt. Pepper's, etc. Growing and changing your sound is part of being a musical artist, and it shows the signs of a GOOD band.

shawndorman........you right and these new songs are very beautiful no one can resist it....

both are really beautiful songs. well and the haters or the fans who hate. still hate it i give a damn

I have a friend who literally listens to nothing but My Chemical Romance (ugh). He too hates Coldplay, says theyre gay, and that they sing too high. Yeah okay, he knows good music...not. Anyway I told him about Coldplay's new style and said even he might like their new album, but he refuses to even listen to one song. It doesnt matter, hes so stubborn even if he did like one of their songs hed never admit it cuz that would mean I was right and he was wrong:P

told ya!!!

This album is very commercial! Which I personally don't think is a good thing! One of the good things of Coldplay is that it had a selected audience! People with great taste of music!!!

Hopefully we don't get the same people that likes Britney Spears!

The post implies this guy might very well like the new stuff but has no intension of liking the older stuff. I say if people are too ignorant to try new music leave them to their ignorance.

And CP will manage to both amaze new fans and expand its listening base 'Low' even if you dont like it.

low76 and stephenG came up with some new thinking to bash us again!

wow that's great!

well we know how to convert haters into likers.

dont worry,we know always how to take care of these special haters like you people.

don't worry about it.Even we know how to fuck you too.

I get confused when people complain about Coldplay 'going commercial'. EMI signed them in the first place on the strength of songs like Yellow and Shiver...both great 'alternative' songs. EMI's a MAJOR LABEL, guys! They wouldn't have signed Coldplay if they didn't think they had commercial appeal.:)

Nobody's sold out. All their albums have had commercially accessible songs as well as more obscure ones.

But to the topic. I have also converted a diehard 'hater' with VH, so the proof is in the pudding!:D

(And we already have coldplay fans on here who like Brit and MCR. Some have been on here for years, so, careful who yer dissin',lol)

@ Pallavi: I think you may have mis-read stephenG's post...it looks completely positive to me.:)

so what i have to do then?????

i get what he is saying,i am not making him to look wrong ok!

what i think is the people who hated coldplay seems to be some what ok with some songs.

which obviously looks great to me.

now say that i am wrong with this.

Absolutely right.:)

That's great!!! See, I would send VH or VLV to my friends...but I bug them enough already with Coldplay stuff that they might get even more annoyed!

But I really want to, especially VLV. That song can change lives, methinks.

(And we already have coldplay fans on here who like Brit and MCR. Some have been on here for years, so, careful who yer dissin',lol)

You can like Britney - no problem!

But is there any Britney fan hear than can tell me he/she thinks Britney is better music than Coldplay?

I doubt it? That can't even be discussed!!!

please compare britney spears lyrics with coldplay and tell us what's the coincidence or difference or what's wrong like that.

i just want to see why coldplay is not nice.

i admit that on MTV that is the only song of britney that i watched and

also hit me baby one more time.

and afterwards i am not at all a fan of her.

that's all don't ask me any furthur reasons.

You know, I should give that a try! I'm a little scared though because Anissa might not like it still but WHO KNOWS? *sigh* yes i'll try.

and to convert lovers... specialy the parachutes fans ones

I have a few friends who have been turned by their new stuff too :D Especially VLV. No-one can believe its them :P
