X&Y

Featured Replies

i have been a huge coldplay fan for a long time however i am fairly new to the message boards. i have read quite a few times that fans here didnt like X&Y all that much and i was just curious as to why that is? i thought the cd was great and i also loved seeing them perform the songs live, twice. maybe it is not the general opnion here so i thought i would ask.

I hear ya! I love X&Y too. Lots of x&y haters here. You should read the post in the Releases section or Multimedia section. I cant remember exactly where it is in here. Its called " Are we too hard on x&y "

But dont worry too much about it. In the end its your music and your tastes. If you like it, who really cares what other think. Besides the tour and the album sold millions so there are many out there that feel the same as we do.

glad to hear you feel the same way... and believe me no amount of people hating the cd could get me to love it any less :)

X & Y IS AN AWESOME SONG ALONG WITH THE WHOLE ALBUM. PEOPLE NEED TO STOP HATING OR DISLIKING IT.

i think the general consensus is that X&Y isn't on par with AROBTTH and parachutes. on its own, i think it's a damn good album (well, i think it's a damn good album anyway), but when you hold it up against the standard established by parachutes and AROBTTH...i think it pales a bit in comparison. to me personally, it sounds like they tried a bit too hard, like they were trying to get bigger as well as better, like their image was just as important as the music, where that had never been the case before.

i LOVE X&Y, i really do. it's just that i love parachutes and AROBTTH more, and they mean more to me. i think there's more feeling in them than there is in X&Y, and frankly it seemed to me as though the guys were enjoying themselves more and were more satisfied with themselves with the first two albums rather than the third.

i think VLV already sounds like they're on the right track with caring about the music and satisfying themselves over anyone else. however, i do worry ever so slightly on all the attention on the things that aren't the music, such as the new costumes, the make-up seen on the billboard cover, the potential gymnastics in the stage shows, etc etc. i just think music should speak for itself, is all, and it worked perfectly for them on parachutes and AROBTTH. they seemed to introduce all the extra stuff with X&Y, and that's when it went slightly...squiffy.

anyway, in my LOOONG post, my point is that i think pretty much everyone on here LIKES X&Y, but they just like the other two albums more.

I think because Coldplay themselves are sorta hard on X&Y, it's suddenly become fashionable to rag on it. And I have to admit that as a whole, it's my least favorite Coldplay CD. It seems like it's trying to do everything A Rush of Blood did but not succeeding as well.

There are still some awesome songs on there: Square One, X&Y, Talk, A Message... I love all these.

like people have said here, x & y by itself isn't all that bad. its actually pretty good. but i came into coldplay with arobtth, and then i found out about parachutes, and those were the sounds that were coldplay for me. x & y changed that up for me, and i dont think it was the right change. they were bigger but certainly not better for me. i think on first listen x & y would probably beat both albums. but once you truly get to know the songs from the first two albums, they are wholely more rewarding.

If X&Y was their second album it would be good. But AROBTTH part II just doesn't cut it for me.

there are quite a favorite tracks in X&Y for me!

Square one

Low

white shadows

a message

swallowed in the sea

the hardest part

X&Y

I still disagree, X&Y is and remains to be one of my favourite albums ever. No other Coldplaly album makes me feel the same way, but VLV might...

love the album and the song......... lyrics stand out more

I'm not sure everybody even likes it, some people really do hate it. I personally love it to death though. And I think the musicianship on it is the best they've ever done, VLV looks like it will almost certainly top it on that though.

what ive always liked about coldplay are the lyrics and with the new album whats freaking me out is that maybe it doesnt have those sorta of lyrics about life and love etc......anybody feel the same way?

Not at all because I thought the lyrics on X&Y were not very good when compared to Parachutes and A Rush of Blood or anything really...and the lyrics on Violet Hill, A Spell A Rebel Yell and especially Viva La Vida have blown everything on X&Y right out of the water. Also, you can tell they're proud of their lyrics this time around because of the emphasis on them in the artwork for the album.

your right about parachutes and a rush of blood to the head wre better lyrically than x&y and the hole them being proud part.....

Well, if I may throw my hat into the ring, X&Y, as we now know, suffered from too many cooks coming in to spoil the broth. I think it could've been so much more and how some of their b-sides didn't make it onto albums when others did is just beyond me. Still, I like to think of X&Y as a natural progression - if they had turned out AROBTTH Part 2 then we would have complained "but why aren't they doing something different - not the same again!"

And we have to remember - Coldplay are still a young band when you compare them to the greats: The Beatles, The Who, Pink Floyd and, for quite a lot though I personally don't agree, U2. There's "Difficult Second Album Syndrome" and "Difficult Third Album Syndrome" and "Difficult Fourth Album Syndrome" but upon hitting Number 5 its clear sailing!

I expect LP5 - "DEATH TO THE KING!" (Bono, that is:D) to rock the world to its core!

So, to wrap up, X&Y I like and view it as part of the larger, growing tapestry that comprises the band we all love - Coldplay.

Personally myself i love X&Y it is a pretty solid album, only the last few tracks arent always played but id say 11-12 out of the 13 are excellent can listen to them without a problem. I like all there albums as much as the next i dont have a favourite really depends what sort of mood im in as to me each one is slightly different in sound but still the Coldplay sound. But i do have a soft spot for X&Y maybe because of memories and Fix you was a great help during the passing of a very very close realtive and then i could really aprreciate the power of the lyrics, i think its one of those songs you really will only appreciate fully when you loose a loved one then it hits home what a powerful song it is where as before it may not be as touching. But anyway i think its a great album dont see why people dislike it so much.

I've hated to say it since I re-listened the album in its entirety, but I still think that X&Y was something Coldplay needed to get out of their system.

Let's look at the facts. It sold. It had a massively appreciative audience. It has mostly epic songs.

The problem I have with it is that, both musically and lyrically, it's too VAGUE. Vague, obscure, empty, call it what you want: that's how I classify the album.

Lyrically, here's what I mean: "And the hardest part, was letting go, not taking part." There aren't the cutting lines anywhere in it, except for a few subtle gems. The endings of Square One and White Shadows, the chorus of Fix You and the end of Swallowed in the Sea are literally the only parts that make you sit up and think, "WOW". The rest is OK.

Musically, it's really just formulaic. It's very simple, and again, nothing that makes you sit up in shock other than the bridge of Fix You, the ends of tracks 1 and 3, and some of the parts of Low. Apart from that, it just trots along.

They needed to get it out of their system. It was, I think, what it took for them to realise that they were good enough to be making stuff that was more daring and had more substance to it. I'm glad it happened, even though I don't particularly think the album is a good one.

For me, Square One, Fix You and Swallowed in the Sea are its only good tracks in any great scrutiny.

Yeah I totally agree (apart from the last line but that's just taste).

Now, I'm fine if anyone doesn't like the album itself, because that's their sincere and honest opinion and I respect that.

But reading certain comments on VLV media review threads, and seeing the repeated attacks on any outlet that gives VLV a lower score than X&Y, I'm kinda detecting a general sentiment that "anyone who likes X&Y is a moron/not a true fan".

I'm a little upset with that kind of attitude, especially the claims that everyone who gave it good reviews only did so because of the hype. Maybe, just maybe, there are people who praised it because they genuinely liked it? I myself like the album very much, and I do NOT AT ALL appreciate these kinds of ignorant, meanspirited assumptions.

Yes, LP5 will be the greatest album ever, the one that launches them past U2, Dave Matthews Band, The Beatles, Radiohead, everyone. Except it's going to be titled "Famous Old Painters" and its title track will be the number 1 song worldwide for 180 months.
