Been listening to a handful of Liverpool fans today going on and on about how Star, Mirror etc. is making a meal of this meeting, the meeting was scheduled 6 months ago etc. etc., and I consistently was shot down for even suggesting that the club must at least be looking at sacking as a possibility.

 

I do feel bad for Liverpool though, I thought it was unlikely for this to happen (But as mentioned, a possibility) and I don't think it should have.

Don't think it's a question of Carroll or Crouch. Agree with the above post. Could easily have taken both and left Defoe at home seeing as Walcott and Oxlade Chamberlain could do the same job as Defoe.

Since when is Walcott anything like Defoe?! This is the situation: ball is slid through the opposition defence, striker has run off the shoulder of the defender and is through on goal, would you rather that striker be Defoe or Walcott?

 

There's no question, Defoe scores 9 out of 10 times, Walcott about 5 or 6. Another situation, ball breaks loose a few yards outside the box, striker has a run up to hit the ball, which one would you rather? I've never seen Walcott score a long range strike, I almost wonder if he has the power to even try it, Defoe has done it fairly regularly every season for Spurs.

 

Walcott will pace down the wing, and sometimes get a good cross in, he has a decent advantage over Defoe that in a 50/50 with a defender chasing a through ball as he will outpace him with explosive acceleration, but then again he usually fails in strength and even if he gets clean through, as I've said he is in no way a clinical finisher and often makes the completely wrong decision. In terms of pace as well, Defoe is no slouch and one of the fastest on the team.

 

Apart from often ineffective runs toward the corner flag, I can't think of anything Walcott can do that Defoe can't, and a lot of what Defoe does, Walcott hasn't proven he can. Stats wise Defoe has 17 goals from 38 appearances this season, a considerable amount of them being substitutions, Walcott has 11 from 46, I mean that's not horrible or anything but that's because he isn't an out-and-out goalscorer and I'm not convinced he ever will be apart from the odd "Henry-like" flashes of a fairly good goal (Which for some reason commentators and pundits go mental about).

 

As for Oxlade-Chamberlain I'm going to admit apart from a few very impressive games and seemingly good run of form at the end of the season- I don't have much of an idea how good he is, that's because he hasn't played that much. I don't know how you could think he'll even feature at this competition unless it's at an irrelevant point.

 

I really think Defoe's talent has been overshadowed by Adebayor's presence this season as Adebayor has been brilliant for the better portion of his stay there, for me Defoe starts up front, who plays with him I have no idea.

I think Walcott's had far the more impressive 2nd half to the season and I'd love to see him as an out and out striker, not stuck on the wing. I would even have put Sturridge ahead of Defoe.

Walcott is indeed in better form and been more effective in the role he plays, that wasn't the point though, Walcott can't do what Defoe can, or at least hasn't shown it yet and I hardly think a major championship is the time to try and prove otherwise.

 

Sturridge is a better player then Defoe but he's inexperienced and has been in terribly anonymous form for a handful of months.

He dropped off a bit after Christmas, especially towards March, he did start missing chances during this time, low confidence in a team that shattered in form. Before this he was gobbling up half chances, and creating opportunities for others from nothing, his work rate in particular this season has been up there with Bale and Kyle Walker, he fights for everything like I've never seen him do at other clubs.

 

I would have put Adam Johnson in ahead of Downing and O Chamberlain. As for the Liverpool job, AVB should get it. Perfect fit for me.

Johnson at the very least could have been an impact substitute for England, whenever he comes on later in a game he looks so dangerous.

Dave Whelan should keep his pie hole shut as far as I'm concerned. If Martinez got the job I would back him 100% but it'd be so underwhelming that you wonder about the consequences of his appointment. AVB is the man for me. Young, full of ideas and a lot of potential still. Totally agree. AVB should be a foregone conclusion by now. Forget the Chelsea thing, the players made that an impossible job to do. He wont get that at Liverpool and if he does, then the players should be sacked immediately. I quite like the idea of Brendan Rodgers, I have been mesmerised this season by Swansea and he seems like a really nice bloke. As for Martinez, it seems like a very similar situation to Roy Hodgson. Too inexperienced with big jobs. If he does get it then, i'll support him 100% and hope that it works out. I think that they are the only three serious candidates. Rafa would be welcomed back but the owners want someone young, fresh and hungry. Should definitely be AVB though, they wouldnt have to get him out of a contract either; unlike BR and RM.

What is with Liverpool fans delusion about the possibility of Roberto Martinez managing your club? Have you already forgotten you spent hilarious amounts of money to come 8th this season? It's not a job that many managers would envy write now, you could do a lot worse the Martinez, his squad has been begging for the Championship and you couldn't pay fans to fill that stadium, but he keeps coming through.

 

Now don't get me wrong, I've defended Liverpool this year and I feel they've been hard done by, and they've done well in the cups of course (but from a managers perspective to take the team forward- that is irrelevant) but this is not going entice AVB to join whatsoever, and the only way he will is the promise of being allowed to spend another hilarious amount of money on transfers, as well as being given a hilarious amount of money to be there.

I thought it was the other way around, AVB made mental decisions to assert his control needlessly, and as a result of consistently doing this got nothing from the players. We'll see if you would say that if, to mirror the situation, AVB left out an in-form Gerrard and Jose Enrique, to make his stamp on his intention for the 'new generation'. It was insanity, really was.

 

It's great to have a long term vision but there needs to be some form of balance, and someone should have told that newb that before he starts dreaming of a young Chelsea team dominating the champions league in 3 years he should try to focus on getting to the end of the first season.

You're right. We could definitely do a lot worse, but we could also do a lot better. AVB has said that he would be interested and I can't see Brendan Rodgers or Rafa saying no. I like RM but he is too inexperienced with big clubs at the moment. Same as Roy Hodgson. I think BR could handle the pressure. AVB will have learnt from what happened at Chelsea, even though it wasn't his fault and Rafa knows the club inside out.
