I swear that from the 70th minute through extra-time, I was seriously entertaining the thought that I had missed Gomez being substituted. I can't even remember the announcer calling his name for the last half-hour. Forget that one cross that took him by surprise (I thought the announcers were too hard on him for that) and even that great chance that he skyed into the upper deck. He just couldn't get involved in the play at all. Robben was almost as disappointing. Not just for the penalty miss, but for a score of missed chances and consistently piss poor set pieces. I don't completely blame the manager for the Buyten sub (though I don't know why you'd ever toy with the centerbacks, Tymoschuck was having a solid game at the back before being forced to push up), but why he took out Muller instead of, say, Kroos is beyond me.

I'm going to be honest, it did cross my mind about how much I criticise Schweinsteiger and Gomez on here, and their performances out there on club footballs biggest stage backed up exactly my thoughts. Schweinsteigers set pieces and deliveries were just as woeful as Robbens- which is really saying something, but at the same time Robben had so many opportunities. I don't recall seeing someone do so consistently terrible at corners in particular, every single time he just wasted it, and at some point you wonder why he wasn't ordered to let someone else take them. The Muller substitution was baffling. I mean you can understand the sense of it, but scoring a goal and then instantly taking off the attacking midfielder and putting on a defensive midfielder straight away- is managing really that basic? Overall though Bayern were very unlucky, it's a real mystery as to how Chelsea have come out of both Barca games and now the final, on top.

A relatively unproven 21 year old is making you stumble? It's one thing nobody has really mentioned but I've thought about it before, particularly with Adebayor, if City keep buying players and giving them massive wage demands, they start to clog up the books. City offer like 5 year contracts and because the wages are so high, if it doesn't work out, like with Adebayor, Bellamy, Santa Cruz (The list just goes on and on) then it's difficult to even loan them out, never mind sell them. They can't put £200,000 a week players in the reserves, but the 25 squad spaces that are to be filled will seem smaller and smaller each season if they keep spending like they have done, and acquiring players that they can't do anything with. It's not quite as straight-forward as having the cash, so they can endlessly spend it. As well as this the spending will of course go down now they've won the title, I'm sure they'll still have a few huge signings this summer but now they are genuine title contenders (They weren't before the start of last season) you can bet they're going to focus a bit more on balancing the books, something they weren't concerned about until now.

It's insane how some people who post in this thread paint AVB as the ultimate victim, as if nothing he could've done would have contributed to Chelsea having such a poor season, to when he left they then turned it around and won an FA Cup and Champions League. How can you possibly think that AVB was at no fault whatsoever? I don't know exactly what happened, as much as you do, the only real confirmation of trouble brewing was Ashley Cole's public argument in training with him, and Lampard when questioned about his relationship with AVB, was somewhat neutral (And in footballing public relations terms, a "neutral" relationship = practically past reconciliation). But those things happen regularly enough throughout a season, it's often within even the most disciplined of teams that in a season, a handful of players get in an argument with a manager or each other. Phil Scolari stated that the next Chelsea manager after AVB would be walking into 'hell' (But keep in mind that this is a guy who consistently managed every year for 3 decades, yet rarely stayed at a team for more then one season at club level) but is DiMatteo finding it hell right now? You can give credit to AVB all you like, but this isn't LMA Manager 2012, it's a fairly huge Premier League team and you can only have so many chances to prove yourself right. If experimenting isn't working then go back to what works, which is what DiMatteo's doing, and it's what I would do. The other way you can look at it is that DiMatteo is just picking the players that AVB had problems with and possibly lost the dressing room over, but you can't know that, I mean, is it so crazy to regularly pick the best and most experienced players you have available? I think it's far from crazy, it's more the obvious thing to do. Besides, for me AVB wasn't doing anything genius, the teams he put out normally played without any hope or any real direction. So yes, sure, you can say he tried to do something new, and that is indeed brave, but does that automatically mean he deserves praise just for being brave? No. Did it work? Definitely not.
