BT Sport will show Premier League matches free to broadband customers

BT offers free Premier League football in BSkyB battle

BT is to offer free Premier League football coverage to its broadband customers, the telecoms company has announced.

After winning a three-year deal to show 38 Premier League games a season, BT has signalled its intent to challenge BSkyB's dominance of sports pay-TV. BSkyB's shares fell nearly 6% as BT unveiled its plans, which includes a £10-a-month broadband package. BT has 6.3 million broadband customers, but just 750,000 pay-TV customers.

The aggressive move is an attempt to establish itself as a major multi-platform provider, offering TV, internet and telephone in one package. BT Sport's channels will also show 69 live Aviva Premiership rugby matches per season, plus live football from leagues in Germany, France, Italy and Brazil.

Chief executive Ian Livingston said: "UK sports fans have had a rough deal for too long. Many have been priced out of the market, but we will change this by giving away BT Sport for free with our broadband. Sports fans are the winners today."

BSkyB dominates the pay-TV market with around 10 million customers, but lags behind BT with 4.3 million broadband customers. BT Sport is also taking on BSkyB in pubs and clubs with a 12-months-for-nine subscription and free installation special offer lasting until 1 July.

Around half the premises taking up the offer will end up paying £135 a month, BT said, while packages for hotels and betting shops could undercut Sky by 75%.

Former BBC presenter Jake Humphrey will front BT Sport's Premier League coverage, and Manchester United player Rio Ferdinand will provide opinion and analysis, along with several other sports stars.

BSkyB's share price was down 6% in early afternoon trading, with BT's stock 2.4% lower. Some investors have worried that a battle for customers between the companies could drive down margins and profits.

Hmmmmm. My Dad may need some convincing.

Given our internet is crap it could be good. Anyone know if this broadband is alright?

never used it, but if BT's customer service is anything to go by I wouldn't bother.

David Moyes: Manchester United appoint Everton boss

Premier League champions Manchester United have appointed Everton manager David Moyes as Sir Alex Ferguson's successor at Old Trafford.

Moyes, out of contract at the end of the season, leaves Everton after 11 years in charge at Goodison Park. The 50-year-old Scot has agreed a six-year deal to replace Ferguson, who announced his retirement on Wednesday after 26 years at United. Moyes will take charge on 1 July.

Everton said in a statement: "Everton can confirm that David Moyes will leave the club at the end of the season. The manager met chairman Bill Kenwright early yesterday evening and confirmed his desire to join Manchester United. The chairman, on behalf of the club, would like to place on record his thanks to David for the massive contribution he has made to Everton since his arrival in March 2002. He has been an outstanding manager."

Moyes was installed as favourite to leave Everton for United following a rush of bets over the weekend, even before speculation mounted about Ferguson's retirement. Ferguson, who stays at Old Trafford as a director and ambassador, has had a close relationship with his successor throughout his managerial career and considered appointing him as his assistant when Moyes was in charge at Preston North End.

Moyes had insisted he would make any decision on his Everton future until the end of the season, but has now accepted the challenge of succeeding the man many have seen as his mentor. He has won widespread acclaim for consistently guiding Everton into the upper reaches of the Premier League on a limited budget, including reaching the qualifying stages of the Champions League in 2005, when they lost to eventual semi-finalists Villarreal.

Moyes has not won a trophy in his time at Goodison Park but United's hierarchy - and no doubt Ferguson - have been impressed by the stability he has brought and his ability to keep Everton punching above their financial weight. He now has the challenge of continuing Ferguson's successes as United defend the Premier League title they clinched on 22 April and is expected to have transfer resources that are vast compared to those he enjoyed at Everton.

One of his first tasks will be to resolve the future of Wayne Rooney. The England striker had told the club he wants to leave, but could still be persuaded to stay should he receive assurances that he is central to Moyes' plans.

Moyes will also be charged with plotting United's campaign to win back the Champions League trophy they last won against Chelsea in Moscow in 2008. Everton, meanwhile, begin their search for Moyes's replacement, with Wigan manager Roberto Martinez and Swansea boss Michael Laudrup both strongly linked with a move to Goodison Park.

And I'm getting really exited for the Dutch Cup final tonight!

It's AZ Alkmaar vs. PSV Eindhoven and I'm going to the game!

Let's go PSV

Not sure if extremely classy goal from the Alkmaar player or piss poor defending.

This on now?

yarr. PSV just got one back. It's scrappy, sloppy, but really entertaining.

6 years of shite at united

silly season has started early..

HAHAHAHAH

(didn't take you long)

Dude, you support Man City. Wind your neck in.

its a poor appoiment in Moyles. i will put it in the same bracket of hitler invading russia

Then you're a moron.

It might not work but I'd have taken him over Mourinho if I was a United fan.

And I'd certainly have him over Mancini.

its a poor appoiment in Moyles.
I agree, I would have taken Wogan any day of the week.

^Nah Mancini's a good boss you just need to make sure he has a few hundred million pound to play with every summer.

Not sure if extremely classy goal from the Alkmaar player or piss poor defending.

Poor defending. PSV is making the same defending mistakes all season long, wich cost us the title and the cup.

Marcelo (PSV-defender) ones said that it's his dream to play for Barcelona. Since then PSV fans are always shouting Messi, Messi, Marcelo is coming.

PSV will need a lot of changes this summer if they want to become champions next season, I hope that Mark van Bommel doesn't retire after this season.

Incredible 48 hours or so. David Moyes deserves his chance managing Manchester United after 10 years of hard and dedicated work at Everton. How will he do? Not sure. The fact is it was an impossible job to replace Ferguson, something even Mourinho couldn't replicate. Moyes was probably the best fit for Manchester United. Immensely respected manager in the Premier League and a very good man manager who the Everton players have loved playing under. Mourinho would inevitable have stuck around for a few years at most and then left to manage elsewhere so the long term future was never guaranteed with that man. It's a clever decision to sustain the long term plan. How it will work out is anyones guess though.

BT Broadband is really quite good from what I've seen from my parents who use it. BT Vision is also really quite good with some of the boxsets (some of them free) that are on offer and that definitely seems to be on the up. Definitely worth a punt. Seems they're offering quite a radical new deal on the Premier League.

Rooney and Sr. Alex Ferguson are just scared to face Cardiff City next season ;)

I disagree, they don't want to go to Hull.

Just look for any good cashback deals.

Ramires sent off for Chelsea

Aston Villa have a superb chance now to snatch 3 pts for their (almost guaranteed) safety
