Viva La Knee-da: Chris Injured In Rehearsals

CHRIS MARTIN is battling to be fit in time for COLDPLAY’s comeback shows – after injuring himself in rehearsals.

The frontman has been left hobbling after twisting his knee awkwardly during practice sessions for the quartet’s eagerly-awaited Monday night gig in London. The rockers will introduce album Viva La Vida – which is released today – at a concert at Brixton Academy and have been deep in preparations for weeks.

A source said: “Chris has been in absolute agony with his knee. He’s had to strap it and has been hobbling around the place. He doesn’t want to cancel the show so is going to fight through the pain barrier.”

I wonder if it has anything to do with his new found fondness for trampolining? And the posh rockers have been forced to postpone the start of their North American tour by two weeks due to unspecified “production delays”.

The shows were due to kick off on June 29 in Philadelphia, but will now start in Los Angeles on July 14. WILL CHAMPION, JONNY BUCKLAND, GUY BERRYMAN and Chris’s album hits shop shelves today – and HMV is banking on it being the years’ biggest seller.

Their stock order is the largest they’ve ever placed in the chain’s history. With only three days of sales to be counted towards a weekend chart position it’ll be interesting to see whether the lads will shatter DUFFY’s 2008 record for first-week sales of 183,000.

I expect they will. And the band’s record company EMI will certainly be hoping they do. They are relying on the album being a hit to raise some much-needed cash after their market share slumped to below 9 per cent in America last month.

The collection is Coldplay’s most intricate to date. And the lads’ broad sound is due to the influence of their new unofficial fifth member JON HOPKINS. The electronic music whizz was introduced to the band by producer BRIAN ENO. They immediately hit it off and demanded Jon stay on to help record the whole album.

They were so taken by one of his tracks – Light Through The Veins – that they’ve lifted it as the instrumental for album opener Life In Technicolor and the hidden track The Escapist.

Bassist Guy explained: “When you hear the record all the things you would associate with Brian Eno aren’t anything to do with him. We were working with this guy called Jon Hopkins. He was just an amazing keyboard player. He’s a producer and writer.”

So pleased are the lads with their collaboration with Jon, he will support them on their world tour later this year. He’s worked with legends like HERBIE HANCOCK and MASSIVE ATTACK.

Oooh I wonder if this is the real reason the tour has been delayed.

His missus did her knee in too, clumsy Martin's :P

Ouch. That's not good news :\

He really needs to stop jumping around all over the place, to be honest. Not only will it make for a more convincing vocal performance, but it reduces risks of injury like this one. Really, he isn't a gymnast.

I hope he's ok though... I'm glad he isn't cancelling shows because of it.

So do you think this will affect the first "leg" of the tour??

EEEEEEEEEKKK! I hope he'll be okay!! Those dance moves can hurt him!

EEEEE-ouch. I sure hope he gets okay soon.

Btw, this is as good as reason as any for us here in Europe to be glad that he'll be right as rain when they start touring here in the autumn. I know it sounds bad but Chris is a trooper and he'll pull through.

As Semy said, it will be good for his vocals to not be able to jump around. Maybe he could play the piano a bit more too, give Terry Vision a rest :P

Well he isn't as young as he used to be.

Time for Oldplay??:P

Exactly

I think its about time we saw some Parachutes / AROBTTH-era-calmness and professionalism from Chris... oh how I miss the days when it was just him at the piano in his average t-shirt and trousers, and singing soulfully without being distracted. Unless he decides to start screeming in agony, I think this can only be a good thing for you guys going to these gigs :D

Exactly

Or even squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeming in agony??

what's up with you and the squee?:laugh3:

Exactly

I agree.

He did used to jump around during AROBTTH tour, but not as much and only on songs where he really wasn't playing instruments, In My Place for example.

Too much jumping into the crowd, swinging lightbulbs etc during the last tour. He said on The Hour though that his favourite place to be was away from the piano, which sucks.

Ask Trace-squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee. She started it!!:P

she started that thread off of the excitement over Violet Hill in the early morning of the 29th. You're just taking this squee to the next squeevel..:laugh3::lol:

I squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed the fifth on that one!!

Yeah, I forgot about that bit in the interview. That would explain it :dozey:

True about some songs having the running, jumping (and occasionally climbing) from Chris, but in small doses that can be quite fun when the rest of the songs are performed impeccably. Whereas recently it seems like you get lucky when Chris isn't moving around, which is a shame. Even in the most recent performances when he's standing relatively still, I can't help but think that he just doesn't sing as well as he used to. Whatever happened to the time during the Parachutes era when he could hit and hold every note he sung?

Here's a perfect example of what I wish we could see from Chris these days... an impeccable performance:

See? image ISN'T everything.

I squeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeed the fifth on that one!!

Viva la squeeda

ouchies . poor chrissy!

glad to see he's not cancelling anything for it though--i think that just goes to show that the rearranged tour dates aren't because of the band themselves. if chris is going to do a show in pain, then i figure that the tour production really was in a shambles and not fit to go on in any form.

haha, gwyneth did a similar thing during iron man! jeez, the paltrow-martins need to get some better footing :P. remember in the live 2003 tour diary when chris was complaining about his leg, which was all wrapped up in an ACE bandage? i'm suprised he hasn't done something this bad sooner, really. not that i wanted him to or anything, of course not. but like semy said, maybe the vocals will get slightly better...or knowing chris, he'll just go on like nothing's happened.

Thanks for that video btw, never seen that before!

Well he is a living leg-end, after all!!
