Not So Much Plagiarism As Free Publicity: Creaky Boards -v- Coldplay

 

Talent borrows, genius steals, they say. On the evidence given when Coldplay were accused of plagiarism this week, we can conclude that the band are neither talented nor geniuses.

 

The unknown Brooklyn singer Andrew Hoepfner and his band Creaky Boards have posted a video online claiming similarities between their track The Songs I Didn't Write and Coldplay's Viva La Vida (type "creaky boards coldplay" into YouTube to hear both). Hoepfner suggests Chris Martin was in the audience of a show he performed in New York last October (which the band strongly deny) and plays poor impoverished David to their corporate Goliaths, saying: "If they ever want to collaborate, I've got some microphones we could use in my bedroom."

 

Listening to his tune and to Coldplay's, you can hear a slight similarity between the stretched-out vowel in the middle of each line. Aside from that, any connection is tenuous at best. Oasis have got away with far worse.

 

This kind of thing does happen accidentally, however. Liam Fray from Manchester indie stars The Courteeners recently told me about their song, Smiths Disco, a recent B-side. It's an exact copy of the melody from Stephen Fretwell's song Scar - and Fray wrote it shortly after attending a Fretwell gig while very drunk and absorbing the tune in his subconscious. The two are mates, though, so legal action wasn't needed.

 

The case of Creaky Boards looks far creakier, but at least Hoepfner is getting a lot of publicity out of it. And even more fortunately, at least Coldplay haven't copied his moustache.

Ok, so you can hear a bit of a similarity with the melody, but that song they're comparing Viva to is complete shit! The whole situation is laughable, forget it people.

The thing that annoys me most is in that Channel 4 clip the Creaky dude said that Dave Holmes rang him up and very nicely told him it was a mistake and offered to send the original demo out to them to prove it. Yet the guy leaves the video on YouTube unchanged, continues to rack up publicity and tarnish Coldplay's (already marred) reputation even though he's admitted he could be wrong.

I think that the fact that Coldplay has said more than once that they "plagarize" or "borrow" or anything to that effect opens themselves up to this sort of thing happenning. They should stop saying that and admit that they are a unique band with a unique sound. Period.

 

I think you can find similarities between any two bands of the same genre if you really try to...

The American band which accused Coldplay of stealing their music has admitted that the allegations might be unfounded.

Creaky Boards, a little-known US group, had claimed that Coldplay's latest single, Viva La Vida, was taken from a song they wrote last year.

 

In a video posted on YouTube, the video sharing website, the group's singer said that The Songs I Didn't Write bore a "striking" similarity to Coldplay's new single. Andrew Hoepfner pointed the finger firmly at Chris Martin, saying that Coldplay's frontman attended a Creaky Boards concert in New York last year.

 

However, the singer has now taken back the accusations.

 

"As this thing unfolds, I'm not sure if there was any copying going on," he said. "I think it's possible that Coldplay and I are just heavily influenced by 'The Legend of Zelda [a fantasy adventure computer game].

 

Coldplay had categorically denied the allegations.

 

Murray Chalmers, the band's spokesman, said that Viva La Vida was written last March, more than six months before Creaky Boards claim that Chris went to see them.

It's actually kind of funny how Coldplay managed to thoroughly kick this guy's ass with all of their proof... But still pretty pathetic how he got all of this publicity for a crappy song that he couldn't promote any other way than to make up this claim.

 

Well, let's hope all of this blows over soon.

All I see in the video is some guy with a dodgy tash and the song is only slightly similar.

The previously-unknown band made headlines earlier this week, when they accused COLDPLAY of stealing one of their songs and posted a YouTube video in an attempt to prove it:

 

A spokesperson for COLDPLAY told Britain’s New Musical Express (NME) “We totally refute their claims, and there are two facts that make it easy to disprove them: first, on the night in October when the band say Chris Martin was watching them, he was actually working at the Air Studio in London, and we can prove that. Second, even if he had been at the gig, Viva La Vida was written and demoed seven months before the night in question, so it couldn’t possibly have been copied.”

I just now watched an interview on g4's "attack of the show" with the frontman of creaky boards about the ordeal. Pretty stupid... the whole time the guy was like "umm...I dunno i just heard a melody that sounded like mine and umm...like, I remember a british guy at one of my concerts that I thought was Chris Martin..."

 

Later on he'd say he admitted he can't really tell british people alike and that for all he knew it was thom yorke. (lol).

 

Also, he started off by saying "well I wouldn't really call this an allegation...I just thought that it sounded really similar."

Host: But didn't the you-tube video say "coldplay steals melody etc."
