Would have loved to hear trouble or some other songs from this album, but like Mimi said, this tour is to support the new album so you expect a lot of songs from it. But, a couple songs from the parachute album wouldn't hurt.

Tweak the Setlist

Coldplay needs to tweak the setlist. I saw the Las Vegas show, and it was okay. I'm not suggesting they make wholesale changes to the setlist (although it would be cool if they sprinkled in a few more songs from their previous cds). But if they can't (or won't), then at least change the order of the songs. No matter how much you liked the show, you have to admit that it's choppy. (Clocks so close to the beginning doesn't work.) And no matter how much you admire the band's attempt to incorporate so many new songs into the setlist, you have to admit that the last 20 minutes are somewhat anti-climatic. (I love Death & All His Friends and The Escapist, but they simply don't work as encore closers.)

Here's a reworked setlist. I've kept every song from their most recent show, except Chinese Sleep Chant (they really shouldn't play this song live). I've added Trouble (from their LA Forum show). And I've kept three new songs as opener, closer, and encore closer. This setlist would work so much better. Tell me you disagree?

Pemberton Setlist (7/27/08):

1. Life in Technicolor

2. Violet Hill

3. Clocks

4. In My Place

5. Viva La Vida

6. 42

7. Fix You

8. Chinese Sleep Chant

9. God Put a Smile Upon Your Face

10. Speed of Sound

11. Yellow

12. Lost!

13. The Scientist

14. Death Will Never Conquer

15. Politik

16. Lovers in Japan

E3. Death and All His Friends

E4. The Escapist (outro)

Reworked Setlist:

1. Life in Technicolor

2. Viva La Vida

3. Politik

4. In My Place

5. Lost!

6. Speed of Sound

7. Trouble (7/14/08)

8. God Put a Smile Upon Your Face

9. 42

10. Fix You

11. Death Will Never Conquer

12. Yellow

13. Violet Hill

E1. The Scientist

E2. Death & All His Friends (The Escapist)

E3. Clocks

E4. Lovers In Japan

P.S. This is just my opinion. I realize that it's the band's perogative to play whatever songs they want in any order they want. This post is simply for the sake of discussion. Let the hazing begin!

i think that setlist is fine :)

it'd be cool if they played see you soon and warning sign

See You Soon ESPECIALLY out of those two needs to be played more. I'm suprised that and Warning Sign haven't been played yet!

If I can ask, why didn't you like Chinese Sleep Chant live? I wondered about it myself BEFORE I saw them perform it live. Now I'll be disappointed if I don't hear it. It just looks like they really enjoy jamming out to that one:cool:

Lol, i hope that when I see them live they play something wack. Something that just hasn't been heard in ages. Like a AROBTTH b-side (apart from one i love).

That'd be sweet!

And possible Careful Where You Stand as part of the acoustic section...

I don't know. Nor do I ultimately care. We're all gonna have our preferances.

They put on such a brilliant show that I don't mind what they play - I know they'll do it well anyway. The fact that I'm standing there in the same room as Coldplay watching them in the flesh play their music is mind-blowing in itself.

Look I hate to be controversial, but I agree with the original post.

I am a big fan, and the new record has really grown on me.

I am due to see them in the UK in December, and can't wait, but I have been less than impressed by their live stuff recently. I've heard some radio gigs, seen some Youtube stuff, and watched a tv performance in New York.

A few things bothering me:

- Total poor showmanship. Chris is looking very awkward onstage. If you're one of the biggest rock bands in the world, I'm sorry but you need to look the part on stage. He's jumping around the stage like a gibbon, and he needs to stop. I remember years back seeing them on the Rush of Blood to the Head gigs, and he was totally awesome.

- What is going on with Chris's singing?! It's not good enough. I have seen various clips lately, and he's just not singing properly! Just singing in a lazy tone, changing things. I'm sorry but thats not good enough. I watched a clip of Fix You from Las Vegas, and he was all over the place. If I had played $100 to see a gig, I would expect the singer to be putting everything into the performance. Go and watch a clip from U2's last tour, and see how Bono puts his heart and sould into every gig. He's pushing 50 now, but recognises his voice isn't as sharp as it was in 1987, so he has a vocal coach. Chris take note........

- That set list, I agree, isn't good at all. I love the new album, I really do, but it looks like they've not put much thought into the set list. Hey, it's early days on this tour, and I'm sure by the time I see them in December, they'll be really tight.

haha uhh are you fucking hearing impaired? chris's singing lately has been the best that it's ever been. and to say he doesn't put 100% into the show is fucking ridiculous. he comes close to passing out from putting out so much energy.

now i agree the setlist could use a little work. maybe adding in 2 or 3 songs that aren't extremely mainstream such as amsterdam, see you soon, arobtth, warning sign etc. however i don't think chris needs to change a thing. watch any you tube video from the most recent shows and if you can still say that you really have an issue.

the clues continue all the time

Maybe this one will be one you decline

But here it is for you to decide:

When I first heard "Fix You", I may have cried:rolleyes:

hmmmmm, more old stuff, ONE I LOVE, of course and add some Moses and Amsterdam for good measure:rolleyes: love the new game

I agree. Chris sounds fantastic live recently, but I disagree in that for some reason it doesn't always come across all that well on recordings, either pro or fan shot...no idea why (though I do have a theory).

I was at the Brixton and BBC gigs, and for the most part he sounded phenomenal, but that absolutely didn't come across on the broadcasts. Ah well, who cares, we're talking about actually seeing them live in the flesh, right?!

As for the setlist, Brixton was the most exciting time I'd seen them live for years, purely because they play so much new stuff (and that was a short set - add in one or two more old classics like Politik and you're all set for an astonishing evening). They look (and sound) like a band re-born.

It's nice to daydream of B-sides, but I really hope people realise that they are just daydreams, and don't get disappointed - I'd be surprised if there were more than one or two played this whole tour, and even then they'll probably be new ones for the singles that they're in the middle of writing.

Well, I have my tickets for December, and I can't wait.

I stand by what I say though about stuff I've seen. All over the place singing, and jumping around like a baboon on stage!

Set-lists should evolve and change. My God I would go crazy in Coldplay playing virtually the same sets every night. I think they are getting too bogged down in the technicalities of a concert ie. lasers, confetti, balls. Just concentrate on the songs. I have never come away from a gig thinking 'wow those lasers/confetti/balls/flying pigs made it all worth while'. It's the musical performance that stand alone.

That's just it, Tigermilk, Coldplay setlists don't evolve or change, at least not during the same tour. Unlike Dave Matthews Band, for example, that rarely repeats a song two nights in a row, Coldplay doesn't change songs or rotate song order. That's a little strange, right?

I also think the production crew is way over its head, at least during the Las Vegas show. Which goes to Tigermilk's point: Why get bogged down in the technicalities of concert, ESPECIALLY if you can't pull it off. While it's admirable to perform so many songs from their new album, wouldn't it have made more sense to wait until they were more comfortable performing them live?

If you've seen Coldplay this tour, then there's no way you can assert that the band's performance was polished. No way. (Especially compared to their previous tours.) And if unpolished is acceptable to you, then that's okay, too. But Coldplay can't be considered one of the best bands in the world, in my opinion, until they straighten out their live performances.

I kinda agree with your sentiments there! I went to see Black Rebel Motorcycle Club last night in a bar in Vegas. A two hour set, which changed during the set. No lasers, no video, no screens, no gimmicks! It was very raw, dangerous and booming!

I think Coldplay need to get out of playing the same old arenas and stadiums. You have to rely more on theatrics to reach your audience.

The trouble Coldplay have now, is the production problems at the start, which postponed early dates. This means they are only set-up to perform more 20 songs, the tech guys are not set up to deal with a different set-list. They have to use the confetti, lasers, balls etc theres no improvisation or spontaneity! They were very ropey on the new material in vegas.

Is it just me or are people seeing the set lists for this tour and feel a little unhappy?

It seems to me that they have totally ditched tracks from X&Y and replaced it with the less popular one from VLV.

Wheres Talk? Dont Panic?

Personally I think 42 and Chinese Sleep Chant are so weak, and would rather see ANY OTHER track from a previous album played instead.

Or maybe a cover version? Anything.

I want Cemeteries of London added...

End of my moan.

42 is my favorite song on the album and I would have been extremely dissappointed to not hear it live. I do agree COL needs to be added.

Um....

It is the Viva La Vidaalbum tour, which means they will be playing most of the album.

Anyway, personally I thought X&Y was weak compared to AROBTTH and VLV, with Parachutes falling behind those two. In terms of anthems, the aforementioned two albums have the best, in terms of fan reactions and chart positions.

I saw the band when they played in Vegas last month, and I thought the set list was well balanced and equal.

honestly, i think VLV is their strongest album - 42 is terrific live, especially when the tempo goes up - also, they're probably tired of doing the same X&Y show w/ fix you, SOS, SITS etc...and it's not like they've completely abandoned them either

Dissapointed with setlist!

Where is "talk"? where is "speed of sound"? come on, those were hit songs! Also, why include "yes" and "42" when "lovers in japan" and "cemeteries of london" are WAY better! huge bummer!

yeah, I really don't get why cemeteries of london is not played; seems like an obvious ommission and to me, one of the better songs on the new album
