As a result, alternative universe's Johnny is being sued by a famous old plagiarist, for not copying someone else's work. no matter how the court case turns out, this had done irreversible damage to the band. Now people on the fence as to whether they liked Coldplay will be pushed to hating them because the media and people who are bending the truth with those stupid Youtube videos have choosen Satriani's side.

What do people think of the original 'Frances Limon' recording, could it assist in demonstrating that music doesn't belong to one artist, instead, many artists today have created, been inspired by, and added to the music we hear from the past?

 

I'm a big satriani fan. But after I bought Jeff Beck's 'Who Else!' album in 1999, which is an electronic guitar album, then heard Satriani's 'Engines of Creation' album in 2000, which was an unusual electronic album for satriani, I realised Satriani must have been influenced by Jeff Beck's entire album. You could inter-change the songs from each and you'd think they are the same artist, same album.

 

Without going off topic, Jeff Beck has been around many many years before Satriani and has influenced a lot of Satriani's work.

I'm glad they took all those slanderous videos off youtube, but the damage may have already been done.

Glad to hear this story has come to an end. Coldplay must have been chocked about this would-be counterfeiting and the lawsuit that followed. However, I'm sure it may happen in the world of music.:(

Coldplay & EMI Music Enter Panic Mode

 

am a little on the OCD side when it comes to web design… and few things make me more irritated than links and functionality that do not work properly.

 

So, when one of my readers emailed me pointing out that my favorite YouTube video comparing both Viva La Vida & If I Could Fly, and then layering Coldplay’s vocals over Satriani’s guitar had been removed by order of EMI Music, I was pretty annoyed.

 

I just cannot stand having dead links… o boy does it tick me off that when you click on those videos all you see is, “This video is no longer available due to a copyright claim by EMI Music.”

 

This is a clear admission that there is something to this case because EMI Music hasn’t pulled all of the videos that play Viva La Vida, they just pulled the damning one.

 

And since I am now committed to not letting this go because EMI and in turn, Coldplay have created dead links on my blog, I am going to retaliate by posting this, even more damning video that explains using music theory that Coldplay is in some seriously hot water. Have a look while you can. See the video before the control freaks at EMI censor this guy too.

EMI - You cannot stop the spread of information on the Internet, and trying is futile. If you take this video down, someone will make another, and taking the video down doesn’t change the truth. The easy answer to this problem is to encourage the bands on your label to either write their own material, or cite the material that they copy and pay the proper royalties.

And when I say suspicious, I am not inferring that I think Coldplay intentionally plagiarized. In fact, if I had to guess, I believe that they did not.

I agree, the article was a bit harsh, but it was interesting.

 

1. It is EMI (Coldplay's label) saying that we don't like how you are using material that we OWN, and you need to STOP. This identifies a definite ownership of music as property and a need for unauthorized users to cease and desist. In other words, music is not common property, and there is clear and distinct ownership (or so EMI is contending).

 

2. That's what this case is all about.

Personally, as a liberal I'm all for freedom of the press and the Internet. Even if this means someone says something about my favourite band I don't like to hear myself.

 

However, all the member of Coldplay are highly intelligent, and I'm sure they have some pretty good lawyers. If this proceeds in the US it's going to get dirty and much as I hate censorship - the band/ EMI probably did it for a reason.

 

However, the fact that it was pulled may also be used against them too, so I'd advise against censorship... it may dig a bigger hole....

I don't think it is going to hurt Coldplay, legally speaking, that EMI pulled it. It just makes the nebulous concept of "music ownership" more concrete.

 

For the record, the YouTube pages that discuss the Satriani/Coldplay case are some of the most vile places I have ever been to. I mean, out of pure interest, I have visited some of those discussions to see if anybody has any good insight. But all I am finding is some of the most hateful speech I have ever seen. I try not to take it serious, but it makes me sick to my stomach.
