Guitarist Joe Satriani sues Coldplay for plagiarism

Guitarist accuses Coldplay of plagiarism

Rock guitarist Joe Satriani has sued British band Coldplay, accusing the Grammy-nominated stars of plagiarizing one of his songs.

Satriani's copyright infringement suit, filed on Thursday in Los Angeles federal court, claims the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida" incorporates "substantial original portions" of his 2004 instrumental "If I Could Fly."

The 52-year-old guitar virtuoso is seeking a jury trial, damages and "any and all profits" attributable to the alleged copyright infringement.

Coldplay, whose soaring atmospheric tunes are often compared to those of Irish rock band U2, received seven Grammy nominations on Wednesday, second only to rapper Lil Wayne.

Among its mentions were nominations in the key record and song of the year categories for "Viva La Vida," which comes from the band's chart-topping album "Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends."

The song is credited to the band's four members, singer Chris Martin; bass player Guy Berryman; guitarist Johnny Buckland; and drummer Will Champion. The title was inspired by a painting by Mexican artist Frida Kahlo.

The Satriani track comes from his album "Is There Love in Space?" Further comment from Satriani's attorney, or reaction from Coldplay's management was not immediately available.

This is someone who is actually suing the band though, not just accusing them to get attention.

Interesting...

Chris did a mention during the Q&A of the Nissan Live sets. He says something about reguarding Viva they are being sued by about 12 people including "it rhymes with Mo Batriani".

Ahhhh, yeah I remember that now, I couldn't figure out who he meant. :dunce:

If it does actually go to jury trial, I fear Chris' many, many comments about being the worlds best plagiarist will come back to haunt him.

The thing is, isnt EVERY rock performer on this earth a plagarist??????

Take a look at Prince, for example, Looking at him perform, you would honestly think you were looking at a morphed Jimi Hendrix/James Brown/Carlos Santana and also he definately stole from other artists like Joni Mitchell, The Rolling Stones, etc.!!!!:laugh3::laugh3:

The fact is, everyone steals from everbody else!!!!!

I am surprised that the Jimi Hendrix estate hasnt sued Prince for plagiarism, or even the James Brown estate for that matter!!

Then look at the late Michael Hutchence!! He definately stole from the late Jim Morrison!!!!

Really, in all reality, theres not one geniune, individual performer out there, and there never has been IMO!!!!!:):)

But then, if this is the case, then Bono and U2 has every right to turn around and sue Chris Martin and Coldplay!!! But they are not!!

This Joe Satriani has just got his head so far stuck up his ass!!!!!!:veryangry2::veryangry2::veryangry2:

I just looked it up on ITUNES and it sounds NOTHING like VLV...STUPID!

It does a little...i actually liked Satriani before this...now he's on my hate list :P...i mean seriously why on earth would Chris steal, he wouldn't. Last time he wanted to use a riff he even went through the process of writing a personnal letter to Kraftworks!

Great this is all over the news now. I listened to the entire Satriani song, the only bit that sounds remotely tike VLV is that little bit of the melody. Actually suing someone for a common chord progression like that is absolutely ridiculous.

This song sounds NOTHING like Viva La Vida, at all, no part of it, not rhythm, no sound, NOTHING, no chords, anything at all!!!!

What. A. Fuckwit (pardon my language).

What pisse me off even more that there trying to still Coldplay's thunder!......Coldplay made a song that Chris himself calls good and that they get all this nomination for it and then this fool comes and tries to take it all away!

[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1ofFw9DKu_I]YouTube - Did Coldplay copy Joe Satriani?[/ame]

you can't deny it looks like it, but i think the law sue is just because he's kind of jealous of the succes of the song.

and if you listen to the full song, it's pretty clear that it's just parts of the song that sound alike.

Maybe...

Joe Satriani is John Galt. :P (sorry I don't know him)

Well yeah, A LITTLE PART is in the same melody... But they used it for the actual singing and not Jonny doing it in the guitar riff.

Maybe its just coincidence... Like Plus One's All or Nothing and BSB's Drowning.

i wont believe that coldplay did it..never...it is nothing

This is some SIMPLE SIMILARITY. Musicians, sue each other just because some shit took your riff, progression, beat and all that sounds A BIT SIMILAR than yours!!!

Geez... What's happening to the world?!?!

Maybe these guys can sue Joe Satriani. It was released in 2002. Joe's If I could Fly in 2004.

And why are they suing just now?

VLV has been on air since July.

oh jeez. :dozey:

people seriously need to get over themselfs..

do you actually believe that coldplay after ALL they achieved with ALL their songs would just sit around scratching their bellies trying to find some idiot so they can copy his/her songs? :inquisitive:

OOH PLEASE..

I wouldn't be too worried, a music copyright lawsuit has to go through a lot of motions and a lot of different qualifications for a song to be considered "copied" or otherwise plagiarized. Theres too many differences for this to be considered a plagiarized song.

It sounds very similar... oh man.
