King responded to Coldplay's statement by saying, "We attempted to have a dialogue on this before we went public. We felt almost forced to file suit ... December 10, 200817 yr Joseph Satriani v. Coldplay Essentially, you will have a jury of 12 more clearly define, from the decision date forward, the distinction between influence and plagiarism. I have ZERO doubt that Coldplay has been influenced by Joe Satriani. Remember, if YOUR DIRECT INFLUENCES have been DIRECTLY INFLUENCED by someone else’s work, you, by definition, have been influenced. I would contend that The Creaky Boards have limited ability to influence, however, Satriani is influential enough that he has had an impact on a generation of artists and, consequently, some of those artists have gone on to influence Coldplay. I truly believe that creating music is an organic, progressive process. Now, we are faced with a case where influence is on trial. If artists are afraid, because of legal repercussions, to advance the sound of their previous influences, I think that music loses in the end. Whichever way the jury rules in this case, I am certain that Joe Satriani will go to his grave believing that Coldplay stole his music, and Coldplay will always believe that they didn't. But the magnitude of this decision moving forward is HUGE. I only hope that, for the sake of music, the jury does not convict Coldplay because I think that the unintended consequences are significant. These are just my opinions…

December 11, 200817 yr Well put together. I was explaining to a co-worker that musical coincidences happen all the time due to certain chord structures. Certain notes are bound to follow the next note. George Harrison got sued for "My Sweet Lord" saying it sounded like "He's So Fine" (I believe that is the one.). Anyway, similar chord structures, but otherwise two original songs. The end of that was very cool too. I agree, they are in no need of others material. The lawsuit is silly.

A whole legion of Satriani fans who also like Coldplay will now shift to completely loving Satriani and wholeheartedly loathing Coldplay. They will also go to their graves believing Coldplay stole the song. I do have complete respect for Joe Satriani and enjoy his music. But this whole thing has left a bad taste in my mouth about his professional persona. I'm sure he is a lovely man and has done much good, but his actions have changed music more than slightly. I believe you're dead on about musicians influences now. They'll be afraid of listening to their influences and building upon them. Until Coldplay's response on their website I was worried they actually were taking this lightly and hoping it would go away and that due to their silence, there might be a chance they lifted some of the song (and me, along with alot of other die-hard Coldplay fans would be in quite a pickle). But when they say they didn't get the song from him, I believe them.

Well I do agree... if Coldplay lose this, it will set a terrible precedent for any songwriter trying to come up with something both original and powerful. Any good repeating 3 note riff a la Franz Ferdinand could potentially be a lawsuit waiting to happen. At the same time, I really don't think EMI's lawyers would have let it get this far if they weren't confident that they would win.
