I think it's all too easy, even a lazy response, to turn one's nose up at our favourite band, which is a great shame. I'm a huge huge music lover, not just a Coldplay fan, but for my money they're easily the best band in the world right now in terms of recorded output and live shows (a bit short as they may be). It's a real shame that class and/or regional affection should interfere with peoples' enjoyment of the incredible music.

???

But we're talking Britain here Pete! Britain is obsessed with class still in the 21st century.

I still find prejudice against the North from the South and vice versa and most of it is down to petty stereotyping down to class.

I'm not sure so much that's the only reason some choose to hate Coldplay though. As a nation, we loath success and successful people. We turn on people once they become successful. We also champion the underdog. That's exactly what happened on Wednesday night. Both the Brit Award judges and Jo Public thought "those guys have won enough Brits, time to give someone else a chance".

IMHO Viva La Vida is the best of Coldplay's four albums. I only hope that the band don't read this as a "mistake" and go back to the comfort zone. Bands grow when they experiement, and this has been a fantastic one IMO.

Does anyone else has the variety of sounds or the sheer genius of the title track that Viva La Vida has?

As I said before, Viva La Vida (song) is a work of timeless art. If people can't see it or appreciate it it's very sad.

I felt really bad for the band on Wednesday. It's the first time I've watched the Brits in years and wish I hadn't now.

I also agree with the comment earlier re the performance of Viva La Vida on the night: it was one of their best to date.

I am not suprised in the slightest Coldplay choose to spend so much time in the US: look how Britain treats them: appallingly.

All I know is, The Brits should be hanging its head in shame................... :dozey:

It's a total disgrace.

Totally agree with LongLiveLife.

Guy Garvey was speaking with Simon Mayo today and Simon asked him why so many people hate Coldplay. He replied with something like "Some people have a problem with success... but I can't understand why they'd hate a rich, talented, good-looking guy like Chris Martin who's married to a Hollywood starlet"

His tongue was firmly in his cheek, but it's true that in this country we do have a "build 'em up, knock 'em down" mentality and class is still a really big issue

^ nice avatar :D

the performance..

if someone hasnt seen it yet!

Yea forgot about that. Coldplay are still way more accomplished than Duffy and their album way more creative and deep than Rockferry though.

And in 5 years time when Duffy has disappeared with a broken voice, Coldplay will still be remember.

Well The Darkness won three Brits and look what happened to them!!

I agree with you totally, I think you hit the nail on the head with the whole success thing. Once people become too famous and successfull over here, we Brits seems all-too-eager to turn on them. Which IMO is just pathetic... shouldn't we be supportive of them.. proud and pleased for them and our country's talent? Especially when they're as likeable as Coldplay. And like you said, we love rooting for the underdog. I wouldn't be suprised if the judges choose others over Coldplay just because they didn't want to vote for the biggest band that already have had their fair share of awards. It makes sense, but at the end of the day, Coldplay still deserved to win regardless of all that. Because like you said, I also feel that VLV as a record is sheer brilliance and was definiately deserving of single of the year. It's in a COMPLETELY different league to Girls Aloud manufactured vacuum pop. And VLV as an album has prooved that Coldplay can grow and enhance themselves.. they still sound like Coldplay, only they have a whole new layer. Even some of the least-likely critics admitted to this in their reviews of the album. In sheer musical depth and variety I'd agree with you that VLV is their best yet. Therefore the Album of the Year title should have been theirs... and I just can't see why the voters didn't see it that way. :\

I just found this blog article from The Daily Telegraph online: http://blogs.telegraph.co.uk/michael_deacon/blog/2009/02/19/coldplay_get_no_brits__and_no_sympathy - All I can say is, what a plonker. I'm speechless, seriously. And he thinks he's a music critic, does he? Some taste mate! Argh, people like this make me so mad. :veryangry2:

Have to agree the better and more sucessful people get over here the media etc. will do nearly everything to take them down.

This guy in that blog obviously thinks what he thinks counts,..well it doesn't to me.

I can't stand critics, neither music or film as it is always just their opinoen nothing more and nothing less.

So, is he saying that all the people who actually pay £50. to see Coldplay are stupid and no nothing about music.

Oh, I could go on and on about but I decided for a long long time not even to read any critics anymore as they are just rubbish! :)

Don't get me wrong ... but I'm not so suprised they won 3 Grammys and no Brits! I don't know why... the fact is that Viva la vida is a beatifull album, but it's not like AROBTTH for exemple! I don't want to say it's worse or better, I'm not a musician, but in my opinion it's less original ... May be this is a reason ...

:)

I am delighted for Duffy. After so many years of thankless toil in Holby City A&E , she deserves this.

Shocker

February 19, 2009

Our overseas Coldplayers won't get it, but it made me chuckle :laugh3:

I am not suprised in the slightest Coldplay choose to spend so much time in the US: look how Britain treats them: appallingly.

I said this in another thread but does Britain treat them so bad because they're always in the US? Or not here in general.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying they should have played more dates here, but they basically released VLVODAAHF and then disappeared for 6 months. You can see why they may have been forgotten.

Whilst they were touring the rest of the world Duffy, KoL, Elbow, Take That et al were here, touring, promoting, etc. By the time Christmas came around Coldplay's album had completely dropped out of the charts whilst the aforementioned albums were all still in the Top 10.

It's crazy that they could sell 300,000 copies of an album in three days and it end up as only the 5th best selling album of the year here.

I think perhaps if they had done a quick tour of the major cities in the UK whilst they were touring the rest of Europe and then had come back at Christmas for the three O2 gigs thing might have been a little different.

^That's no excuse. The best group in the world, that just happens to be British, gets snubbed by its own "awards event" in favour of inferior product. That's a gross insult if you ask me. It would serve the powers-that-be right if the band decided to up sticks and move to the U.S!:dozey:

The whole show was farcical anyway, especially with the likes of Alan Carr camping it up........................

I do agree apparently, however they still did quite a hug promo here in the UK at the release and interviews etc. I don't think they were underpresented and they had massive airplay at least at capital...:)

However I think that the british people like to have their artists actually in the country and not travelling the world.

Coldplay is a worldwide band now so they have to play, promoted in other countries and the US is a big place to play.

I don't think it would have been different if they would have been here, however I think it's generally a good idea to play some club gigs in the UK when releasing an album.

Opinion versus fact again. :snore:

They did the huge promotion to sell the album and then just disappeared.

I know they have to play the world, but I think maybe they should have come here a little earlier. I think it could have been different in that if the album had continued selling as well as the others it would have been more of a contender.

There has to be a reason they were the biggest selling act in the world last year, but not came nowhere close in their own country, a reason why we weren't not a receptive as the rest of the world, whereas we have embraced them wholly on the previous three.

^The fact being that The Brits was a total disgrace again.:smug:

yeah, your right - just thinking back, BBC Gigs was in June and then not much til December!

LOL, even Jonathan Ross put on his twitter on Thursday that coldplay should have won.

However I think that all the public votes, Coldplay never had much chance against a metal band and a girl band where the fanbase is totally different.

Personally I think a lot has to do with the whole cool not cool/successful not that succesful yet idea behind it.

Most of the years I think the Brits are desperately trying to be cool....which never will happen.

I always get the impression that in the UK they just love to build a band up, then knock them down. :\

I hate all the negativity it brings about though, I've avoided looking up Coldplay stories for this forum on google since Wednesday because I knew they'd anger me. It's so easy to take a pop at Coldplay and this Brits thing is the perfect excuse.

I just hope next time around they have a bit of a rethink. I know they're a global band and need to cater for that, but they need to remember that just being from a country isn't enough to guarantee success, they have to work just as hard (maybe even harder) here as they do elsewhere. After all they walked away with three Grammys a few weeks ago...

Like Angie said, we love to build a band up and knock them down, they need to try and fight that mentality rather than succumb to it.

It's not just bands, it's any high profile person

yeap, they def. need to rethink and have to remind themselves that they also need to work their homecountry as hard as the US.

When Rob Williams moved to LA the press started to turn on him and obviously with the whole TT comeback they media had a easy ride to have a pop and him, plus the moment he become an international superstar they start to knock him.

So, yes in this country they love to do that (well, also in my homecountry Germany is not much better-just don't have too many great artist to build up and knock down again...LOL).

So play more concerts to win an award for an album? That doesn't make since to me. Did they really play a higher precentage of shows in the UK during X&Y tour?

Not more. That's not was I was saying:

They played enough. Just sooner.

They disappeared for 6 months after VLV came out, anyone who wasn't on this forum and following them around via news stories from wherever in the world they were would have forgotten about them and the album.

It isn't like they released major singles that charted high, they weren't on TV, no reports in papers from gigs, not many songs on the radio.

Whereas all you see here is KoL and Take That, Elbow and Duffy. There has to be a reason it didn't sell as well here as everywhere else, surely.

The album wasn't seen as a success here, well not in comparison to others, that of course will have affected the awards.

That's true Duffy had major, major exposure this year, TT are "cult" anyway here in the UK.

Well, Capital Radio must love Coldplay cause I have the radio on all day in the office and they play Coldplay a loooot!!!!

Think they need to find a balance in the future. However I am not sure if they would have won the awards in that case but you never know..
