Chuck, as an anarchist I think the nuke is the greatest invention since sliced bread... because now individuals can theoretically have as much power as standing armies had in the past! It keeps little travesties like world wars from happening.

Localola86, I think you'll enjoy the essay. Particularly if you like ethics! BTW, I'm not a follower of Ayn Rand, although her ideas are interesting. I think she still has too much faith in government. As for the Buddhist/money thing, well... look at it this way: taxation forces vegetarians to pay for cattle ranches, and pacifists to pay for wars. It's not enough to say you won't miss your money - you are being forced to pay for things that don't align with your principles, and as a result your principles mean less in the grand scheme of things. Basically your morality is being outsourced and a politician is taking credit (remember when Bush got praised for "giving" billions of dollars to Africa to help them fight AIDS)?

Oh Boy Obama, Otay Buckwheat

It's amazing egh? this Guy is for all intents and purposes "the real deal" as they say.

The only question is, can President Half Breed (mutts like me???) and his team of wizards save humanity before Nature plays the card for us?

Check out my new thread under the same name as the title here. I have a pet theory that the world environment has now reached a saturation point with liquid water, and this in turn has produced a tipping point in the world temperature. The world average temperature has gone dowen almost 1 degree in the past 18 months. Ask Google, googles does not lie (do you Google?)

So as we may all be rejoicing about Obama, as we rightfully should (thank you God) I am just a little creeped out about the weather situation, becuase if it gets too cold to grow food, we won't be needing a car or any more "credit". But you might need a gun. I hope I'm just paranoid, but then how long does a straight line have to remain straight, before anyone has noticed it has started to curve?

Who alone amongst us can see into the future and divine the very nature of reality itself, if not but Saint Christopher Martin His Self? If you listen closely to "A Rush of Blood to the Head" backwards at 33.3 rpm, you can hear him talking about NEW York being covered in six km of ice and..... it's all too silly in the end...

So much for my attempt at mildly sarcastic humor! I am actually in favor of stopping nuclear proliferation, since proliferation increases the odds that any nation which suddenly goes unstable politically, may also go unstable in the nuclear department. Perhaps better than that would simply be to teach more of the causes and reasons to prevent a loss of democratic institutions and individual liberties. Primarily, the support of grass-roots, common-sense moderates in any nation yields the best results; once again, I feel our US foreign policy is both too stingy in helping the poor get boots with bootstraps so they can pull themselves up, and it rewards the worst behaviors (i.e. - instead of arms to any nation, let's try lessening debt burdens and helping with expertise to build useful infrastructure - this would do so much more good, at much less cost). Obama says this, and I do believe he means it, but getting past the hurtles of advisers and Congress will be a challenge. Maybe it's because the President has the power to appropriate military expenditures first, and then Congress would be loath not to approve (plus the military-industrial complex's investment in their 'senators' has an impact on their collective choices). But it's so often the unseen causes, akin to the Tsunami wave far out at sea that's so small a swell but as wide as a continent, which by being overlooked ends up hitting us in the collective forehead when it reaches a breaker moment? How to call attention to a problem before it becomes a disaster is one issue; Another is finding the political will to see long-term results from investing in the well-being of our fellow mankind. I think we can do this when the moment is right, and now may be that moment.;)

Chuck we can't move forward til both sides admit there side is the problem. Democrats can't blame Republicans for the very same thing they do. Partisan politics leads to destruction.

Indeed. I like the unity this man brings to office.

Where's the soma? People around here need it REAL BAD.

My fellow americans:

I know most of you are very excited because of the new president, yeah I wanted Obama to win too, and it's a great moment in history, but don't expect too much from him, he won't fix everything and change the world; he is just a human beign like us who has taken a great step and hopes to do a good job, but don't expect a lot. I hope I'm wrong though

Warning: HEAVY doses of cynicism ahead! Watch this video at your own risk if you are even mildly supportive of Obama, because it will make your blood boil.

Happy Obama day my american friend! Woo!!

1 hour to go before it all properly kicks off people!!! :D :D!

hah, thanks so much!!! (sorry my reply is a little late!) :laugh4:!!

Your country will also be transformed, to your relief. :)

We must be the change we wish to see. Get organized, make the pressure real, and then Obama and Congress will do the right things.

I partially agree. The question is, will we hold our politicians accountable when they don't do what we want? Is Obama pliable enough for the people?

I want to see every asshole politician who supported the bail out be held accountable by the AMerican people when they come up for re-election. Remember the majority were against it and still Congressmen went on record saying that their constituents were against the bail out but they were going to vote for it anyways. They betrayed their people for bribes, now its our turn to use our democracy and take them out of office.

So America has got their very own Tony Blair

Hopefully history won't repeat itself.

BTW, anybody notice Obama's fuck-up with his oath of office?

obama didn't fuck it up, john roberts did. i'm not saying this to defend obama, but that's what the experts and pundits say, and it was quite obviously roberts that recited it wrong. obama didn't know whether to repeat what roberts (wrongly) said, or say it how he knew it went, so that's why it was a bit awkward. they re-did the oath the day after, but obama officially became president at noon EST, oath or not, so it didn't make that much of a difference.
