Apples & Oranges. You really can't compare the two, as their artistry is different; even their attire is different! I'm content to enjoy both equally, and simply let them keep making great music.

Coldplay And U2 are two totally diffrent bands,and can't be compared.but i listen more to the music of coldplay.

well, i came back here to see what went down over the last little while, and was pleasantly suprised to see 4 pages of posts!!

 

i think you guys will all be pleased to here this....i watched coldplays performance at the grammy's and at the brits, and it's really nice to see chris martin acting more like himself instead of bono...if he sticks with that style, not only am i fine with it, i also enjoy it...

 

to those who think bono wishes to be as good as chris martin...really? thats a joke...bono is bono....and bono loves bono..

 

and to those who say u2 are granpa's and there time to is over, well, the new album has been reviewed by many, and the reviews are damn good...for example, rollingstone gave it a 5 star review, calling it "U2's five star masterpiece". last time i checked, coldplay's last 2 albums got 3 stars and 3 1/2 stars respectively...obviously you guys are biased towards coldplay, and me biased to u2... but when a neutral third party decides which is better, they choose u2..

 

and to all the bono haters out there, you can call bono arrogant (agreed), call him old (he's getting there), but don't call him washed up...bono has charisma and presence on stage, or on an album that is second to none....bono also has something very important....it's something you can't be taught, or figure out on your own.....bono has "it"....you're either born with "it", or you're not...

 

i know me saying this stuff won't convert you over to the darkside, but go listen to u2's new album and tell me it's not incredible...

I was surprised to see five stars. This really is a statement. Usually five stars from RS are reserved for Bob Dylan and people no one's ever heard of.

Sure they have released better stuff. But this album is great nonetheless. I can't wait to see how much it grows on me in the next few weeks.

 

In my opinion the song Moment of Surrender beats anything on Viva.

Yeah, I wouldn't say Rolling Stone is the best thing in the world.

 

I think that something like metacritic is more accurate since it pools reviews.

yeah i check out metacritic all the time....coldplay has straight 72's, one 80 for rush of blood (which is their best album imo), and a 67 for prospekt's march...

 

i really do believe coldplay is a good studio band, and i've said that all along...but u2's scores on metacritic are 79 and 80 for their last 2 albums (not including no line on the horizon yet)....and u2 in the studio isn't even their number one strength!!

I don't deny that U2 probably have the best concerts around, but I'd say both bands are among the best live acts in the world today.

 

I've been comparing VLV AND NLOTH horizon track vs. track (COL vs. No Line on the horizon, Lost! vs. Magnificent etc.) for the last half hour. Mind you I'm a firm believer in album's being greater than the sum of it's parts, but I have to say Coldplay is really very refreshing after all the U2 I've listened to. Both album's are excellent, both U2 limits themselves a bit more in terms of instrumentation. While I love the intros and electronic bits, LIT alone comes off as far more ethereal.

That said, I don't really feel like they comparing them because they're both brilliant in clearly separate ways, despite the similarities. I don't think I could justify calling either album "superior" quite yet, as both albums possess certain qualities the other one lacks.

Yeah, I find you can't really compare albums to each other for a few years. When HTDAAB first came out it was probably my no. 2 U2 album for a while. But now its lower than that.

well you can't compare them, you can compare certain albums, maybe they are just the same type of rock arena band, but coldplay is totaly different, U2 goes more to traditional rock while coldplay goes to, uh, ballad rock

I stumbled on this page out of sheer boredom, and found this thread quite amusing... Meedge's assessment of Coldplay is grounded in fact, not opinion... all the clamouring of "why can't we like both?" is juvenile rhetoric , suitable for the brain deficient.

FACT: U2, like all good bands(pixies, radiohead, nirvana, smiths) is not a slave to its influences, but an almagamation of all its inspirations presented into something new and constantly evolving.

FACT: Bono is his own entity, a star without pre-meditated actions or self- conscious posturing

FACT: U2 sound like U2

FACT: Coldplay sound like some sort of hybrid radiohead/U2 bastard abomination of nature which some how festered and grew into a giant pulsating boil of sound which has been tortuing the ears of humanity for the last 10 years.

i like how you appreciate u2's music...you understand that the new album is a cerebral adventure, targeting all the senses, and leaving your nervous system not wanting more, but begging for more!!

 

u2's voyage through the years is like that of jason and the argonauts; setting sail into the unknown void that is humanity to find the golden fleece, only to find what is right in this cynical world....

 

coldplay's voyage into the mythological world finds them playing the role of eros, the greek god of love who eventually sucumbed to the noble king of mycenae, and his band of jabsters...

 

we're all trying to play the balancing act like some french dude walking accross the twin towers on a rope tighter than mother teresa's vagine....and i'm fine with that...

I dont know why, but No Line On The Horizon hasn't caught me yet. I was listening to War today, and I asked myself: "what happened to this U2?"

 

What happened to the Under A Blood Red Sky U2? I wish, I could have been around to see those days like I see today. I want the Raw, strong and passionate U2 back. We got a glimpse of it in 2005 when The Edge lit himself onfire during the Vertigo Tour. In 2001 at Slane Castle.

 

No Line On The Horizon though, does not have that passion. It doesn't have a Kite, Walk On, Sometimes, Crumbs. To me the album is lacking the emotion of the past.

 

Or maybe this album hasn't grown on me. It hasn't grabbed me like Viva La Vida did, its good. Its really good, but I have been forceing myself to listen to it. Im really back into Coldplay right now.

 

Im looking forward to the tour, for the old songs. To hear Streets and hopefully bad. Those are my Politik's for U2. When I heard the opening notes of Politik, I knew all the pain, the travel and 48 hours without sleep to see Coldplay, was worth it.

 

This album doesnt have a lynch pin song to me. It has good songs, but nothing That gives me shivers like Streets. Nothing that brings so much passion in me like SBS. Nothing that makes me want to cry like One. It doesnt have that song.

 

Thats why I see this album as a disappointment, because even Bomd had a song like that for me.

I was very impressed with their new album... it's very fresh for a U2 album. They sound like a new band imo.
