First impression: Coldplay at the Verizon Wireless Music Center

Near the end of Coldplay's show tonight at the Verizon Wireless Music Center in Pelham, blizzards of paper butterflies came hurtling from the sides of the stage. Soon enough, the lower part of the audience was engulfed in the pretty confetti, which provided a joyful, glow-in-the dark accompaniment to "Lovers in Japan."

I'm a sucker for any concert that uses well-designed visuals as an exciting adjunct to the music (Flaming Lips, anyone?) and Coldplay's 9:15 p.m. show gave me plenty to look at while I was listening.

Examples: a dynamic light show, hallucinogenic lasers, jump-cut videos, giant yellow balloons, screens that resembled Japanese lanterns and the dramatic antics of frontman Chris Martin.

I'm still sorting through the imagery, as well as the set list, but the overall effect was positive and somehow life-affirming. That's no surprise, perhaps, on a tour called "Viva la Vida."

For a full review, look later on al.com or see Wednesday's edition of The Birmingham News.

Coldplay have so much wonderful songs, but continue to play this setlist as robots. I'm understand that it is caused by specificity of tour and necessity to combine a song with visual effects but who will be against if they at least play NORMAL versions of Talk and GPASUYF or will sing something from the first album?

Were you at the show? Did you see the robots at work?

I don't know why I continue to be amazed by these staggeringly stupid comments about setlists. Better to ignore them, I know.

WOW thx Angie (the video and the pics are awesome!!!)!! I totally freaked out! Love how Chris always surprises the fans

wondering why Chirs danced with this lion head in places other than Hong Kong

But I think you should post some videos, screaming is ok!!(well at least for me:P) Post them all, I so wanna see the videos!

But they've don the normal version of GPASUYF to DEATH! The reason they've done different styles of thsoe two is to freshen them up and breathe a bit of new life into them, which in regards to GPASUYF, has worked for me.

THanks for the updates!! Gonna check all of them as soon as I come back tomorrow afternoon :D

Thanks for the updates Angie ! Hope your show was awesome !

Bwahaha Dragon Chris dancing is hilarious ! :D

I think I just spend almost an hour to catch up from page 10... that was the page count when I went to bed!!

I agree...

Not everybody follows Coldplay like we do!

The boys give you the impression to witness something unique - and that it is of course.
