Every hour is Earth Hour!;) YAY FOR FLOWER POWER!:daisy::sunny:

Peace :daisy:

I think we were the only ones in our street. Our next door neighbours seemed to have even more on than usual :(

Too bad :( It was so nice to see the candles.

I was in the centre of the city and it was nice to see how almost all the buildings turned the lights off

I'll go practice the future Coldplay hit single I'm working on.. Thanks to Earth Hour, great music will be honed to perfection..:laugh3:

:stunned:Really?? Wow, that's so cool, Lore!!!!:cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool::cool:

that will happen here, for the first time society and government will cooperate apparently, I'm sure at least 1 million is gonna do it, although some people think this of the global warming is a lie :\

:stunned:Wow! I'm glad to hear that, Ricardo! There will always be skeptics, and that's probably good too, as a check, but truthfully, I highly suspect global warming is real and the climate of the earth is changing due to human influence, pretty significant changes possible; but I still think the precise effects are up to interpretation and there's plenty of variables we've only been guessing at - the ice sheets suddenly flowing is one of the big mysteries - how often, how fast, and what happens when that let's loose!

we went out for dinner and all the lights were out on the street, and they dimmed most of them in the restaurant, candles everywhere, it was so nice, it would have been better if they were playing coldplay in the background but they did try. we played tic tac toe with the kids, they did not have any electronic devices with them. How do the Amish people do it 24/7? we need to learn more from them

Of course some people are skeptical, but I'm more in the class of people who isn't sure what to think. If there were more scientific evidence that wasn't funded by governments, I'd probably find it more believable. As it stands, it just looks like another "negative externality" the governments of the world want to take advantage of as an excuse to tax us more.

Also, is there an optimal temperature for the Earth? Who's to say the Earth should be cooler or warmer? These are value judgments.

I guess I miss this thing. Haven't watched TV in two days, and barely skim throught the newspaper.

Anyway, alternative sources of energy need to get cheap enough to be fully embraced by everyone all over the world. Until then, we're stuck with oil and gas.

Discussions on global warming or climate change being man-made aside, I worry about the effects of air pollution on people's health. I mean, how people in the big cities breathe that smog? :sick2:

I'm not sure what to think about global warming either. How could I be?

For me, Earth Hour is more an act of drawing attention to the question and think about how we use our resources.

Power to the People, Ricardo! YAY!! :sombrero::sunny::sunny:

I did Earth Hour - pretty cool! Listening to the wood hiss and crackle on the stove, and the warm glow of oak afire on a bed of coals,,

Yeah, I know what you mean.

I'm an environmental science major in Uni. And I still haven't really seen any conclusive reports telling me that humans are influencing climate.

And its true, the earth does go through cycles of temperature.

HOWEVER

Human activities are definitely very destructive to the environment in terms of ecology and biodiversity.

I don't think that everybody turning off their lights is really going to save the planet. But it does definitely highlight the affluence of our culture and the way that we waste so much.

Briggins, I agree. I think the environmental causes that get the most sympathy from me are the ones having to do with deforestation. Particularly in the rainforests, because of the undiscovered species... it's foolish to waste a resource like this on paper or whatever when future generations might be able to discover cures for diseases there.

Pardon me for missing your post @ first!:embarassed: That is really super-cool!:cool::cool:

The Amish are simply just well adjusted to lanterns, candles, stove light, etc. But I agree - they have a system of values that keeps the simple pleasures in life central to their lives, and it really has great redeeming qualities we've whizzed past in our modern lives..

Sounds like you had good fun with the kids - it's been ages since I've played those sorts of games.;)

we are surrounded by the Amish here-

they dont believe in electricity within their own homes- but sure do take advantage of it anywhere else!

:laugh3:I suppose so. I've gone without electricity for a few days, and while it's a nice experience, it's pretty humbling to the point of "wow, I'm so glad I can turn on the tap, water comes out, and the fridge' works!" In the summer though it's really no big deal.. Have you gone the non-electric route for a few days??

Yup- last winter , we were struck by a massive ice storm, went with no power for 11 days in FREEEEZING temps. Argh- never again!

Yes, that's gotta be a hard time to go without electricity!! BRRRR!!! :whaaat:

Did you huddle together, or do jumping jacks to keep warm?:P
