I still don't get why Coldplay is "the biggest band in the world."

Featured Replies

Now don't get me wrong, Coldplay is my favorite band hands down, but with all the hate they get it's hard to believe they're the most popular. If you've never heard Coldplay in your life and only what the media and the rest of the public told you, you would probably assume Coldplay is a non-crappy version of...Kevin Federline.

I guess my question is, how can these guys be the most popular band in the world right now despite all the resent towards them? And how do you deal with "taking all the shit for being a Coldplay fan?"

Personally, I insult the haters back (usually they like stuff like System of a Down or Blink-182, and they're normally my friends anyway so it's all in good fun), but sometimes I might get into a debate. However, just like religious/political debates, they're pointless and nobody ends up changing their mind. :P

i personally think everyone is so worried about being payed-out for liking coldplay that they automatically pay others out to save themselves. So technically speaking, everyone who creates all this hate shit must really like them but are just too ashamed to admit it. People who do hate them though often can't be bothered wasting their time complaining. Well that's what I know.

i still dont understand why some people dont like them. i like stuff like system of a down and blink 182 (i love blink 182) yet i LOVE coldplay. i just dont see why a lot of people think they cant like both. people should allow themselves to like all feels of music (im not referring to you mr. snig, but people in general)

I guess the word "Biggest" can also apply to record sales and they're pretty you know well off :P for those.

But they're immensley popular in the sense of radioplay, popularity, record sales, press. They're massive.'

But you know, so were the Spice Girls.

While it's true they're doing extremely well, I seem to come across more Coldplay haters than fans, and the haters are much more vocal. I dunno, I guess I kinda find that weird considering how big they are.

I know what you mean.

I think it because it seems like the "cool" thing to do to dislike Coldplay.

And you know, the morons are usually loudest. So that's all we're really exposed to maybe?

But obviously there's a tremendous amount of fans if you looks at record and ticket sales.

because they are not the biggest band in the world

okay, like prospekt. said that can apply to different things (sales, music taste, single rankings, etc), so it's pretty hard to say that they are the biggest band in the world

because they are not the biggest band in the world

I didn't know Chris posted here. :P

oh no, now I'll have to create a new account :P

But i mean, people say that U2 are the biggest band in the world.

Anyways, Viva is "bigger" than NLOTH.

are you sure? Viva is probably coldplay's biggest album but nloth isn't U2's biggest.

the band in my avatar is the biggest band in the world... but these days, for me, it's U2

Yeah I know. But if we're talking about the current "biggest band in the world".

Coldplay's most recent album is bigger than U2's, right?

But that may very well be washed out with the tours. Cause U2 is a much hotter ticket than Coldplay.

but you can't judge how big is a band just because one album...

but you can't judge how big is a band just because one album...

Yeah.. I know... but I meant like in this current moment, in terms of "bigness" not greatness or whatever.

just in terms of album sales :P

just in terms of album sales :P

Lol well yeah. And radioplay and stuff. Well over here at least.

But it does reflects the opinions of the music-listening world. The fact that Viva was better and more widely received by the general public says that Coldplay is currently bigger than U2. You can also compare tour stats and such...

i hear all this talk that coldplay has a lot of radioplay, but here it is so rare to hear coldplay on the radio. i remember back in '03 you couldn't turn on a radio w/o hearing clocks. there's only 3 stations that really play coldplay. a couple weeks ago when i was driving a rare incident occured, a radio station played 2 cp songs in one hour. first it was vlv (obviously) then later speed of sound.

you know why i think they do better in sales than other artists? us fans are more loyal, and more willing to pay for our albums & downloads. most ppl just download their music illegally for free, but we're more comitted & we actually pay, but other true "rockers" are to broke to afford albums :laugh3: anyways, i like blink 182!

i think another thing is, when you look at it, how many bands are there left? most lead singers went solo, and which of the very few bands left actually released an album last year? all american rejects finally released their album (which is awesome!) but it wasn't at the same time as vlvodaahf. since no doubt is back (2nd greatest band ever) i think next year when they release their album they're gonna be the biggest band.

i remember in an interview the interviewer was like "so i'm talking to the biggest band in the world." then chris was like "then you'd have to talk to u2." so the interviewer was like "well, i called them but i only got their answering service and they told me to call the 2nd biggest band in the world." so chris said, "then you'd have to talk to greenday." but seriously, when was the last greenday album produced?

Hm, I didn't realize Blink-182 was this popular. I don't know, for some reason, I just can't stand them. Well, sorry if I stepped on any of your toes! >.<

I definitely agree with this. Maybe I just don't listen to the right stations, but it seems I can never find Coldplay on the radio... literally 1% of the time I listen to the radio Coldplay is on.

i know, it makes me sad . i've spent an hour in the car flipping through the stations hoping to hear ANY coldplay song until i gave up and just played AROBTTH

What radio are you guys listening to? If you switch to pop radio, it feels like Viva la Vida is played 50% of the time. It's more moderate on the alternative/indie/rock stations. But even then, I've heard Lovers in Japan and Violet Hill countless times.

Well, yeah, I mainly listen to alternative/indie/rock stations. But even on the pop ones that I randomly scroll through from time to time, I hardly ever hear Coldplay or VLV.

Maybe Tennessee is just cooler than California. :bigcry:
