The Degradation Of Coldplay

Featured Replies

Ahhh so if you joined after VLV, you're only a fan since this album? That's weird because I became a fan in early 2003 and my favourite album is X&Y but didn't give a fuck about this site until December??

come on this is ridiculous, they still make great songs dont they?

Why?

Chris used to idolize Radiohead, now he idolizes Beyonce.

I would definately have to agree with this one. It seems every time they come to Houston, Chris makes some reference to Beyonce because she is from here

Chris used to hang out with Tim from Ash, now it's Jay-Z.

--- How do you know this? Have you been stalking Chris? Has Chris deleted Tim on Facebook? Aww...

:laugh3:

I havent read through the whole topic, and it may have been said before, but my major problem with modern day Coldplay is how often they use pre-recorded music during their shows...

They're talanted musicians.... why cant they just play it?

Putting on a 'big show' has become more important than the music.. which is very sad to see.

Why use pre-recorded piano in Lovers in Japan while Chris Martin just runs around? Why cant he play it?

Well, imo, they try to have a balance between the musicality and the show, and to me it works out pretty well. The only two times they use prerecorded tracks (if I remember correctly) were Viva la Vida and Lovers in Japan. Viva la Vida is kind of obvious, since it's violins, and they don't have violin players touring with them. LiJ I think Chris just wants to have fun with the crowd since it's the most visual song of the show pretty much. I imagine the piano bit in that song would get very tiring on the hands if he played it the whole way through.. And he does go back and play it at some points. I don't think they let the song quality slip just because it's live, I just think they're trying to find ways to make it more fun for everybody in the audience, which I don't see as a bad thing.

Btw, Josh, I think I may as well just stop talking about the Hokies as it's obvious I don't know much of anything about their past few years :P.

I think so...

I see your Viva la Vida and Lovers in Japan, and raise you a Fix You ('tears stream down your face' vocals), Life in Technicolour, and 42... just off the top of my head

they've been doing it since Rush of Blood tour, with the backing cello on In My Place. then on X&Y obviously Speed of Sound is also backing-tracked. that's just two songs off the top of my head.

and then it goes full scale on VLV era, up to the point where i dont know which part the band's actually plays and which are just prerecorded tracks. i'm suspecting on the whole VLV (the song) the actual band parts are very little.

I guess I haven't watched enough live videos to state anything but from what I've seen they use pre-recorded tracks quite often, right?

If I ever attended a Coldplay concert I'd rather want to experience a CONCERT than pre-recorded tracks and hyperactive Chris. I'm not saying he has to stay still, but come on...

Their concerts are still pretty cool, but in watching 03 and comparing it to the concert I saw, I really wish I'd seen them in 03 instead. They used to have this unintentional awesomeness (rather than all the stage folly they have now), and even though it wasn't anything spectacular, it was still amazing.

But every fan of every band always says 'they were better a few years ago'

Another thing that's pre-recorded on VLV is the 'ohhhh's from Guy, Jonny and Will. Do not forget this! Every damn performance almost it's been a pre-rec.

Personally the only thing I hate is the fake backing singing, it annoys me a lot.

Also, all the backing tracks, I think should be played with an extra body. At least then its a bit more live and whats the harm???

But apart from that I don't agree with anything else said here.

Ridiculous.

Why?

They used to be rock, now they're pop.

They use to be endearingly self-depricating, now it just seems insincere.

Chris used to hang out with Tim from Ash, now it's Jay-Z.

Guy used to be a raging alcohol diva, now he just takes photos.

It used to go "I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war, if you can tell me something worth fighting for", now it goes "those who are dead are not dead, they're just living in my head."

They used to wear pants and a t-shirt, now they wear costumes.

Jonny used to have his amazing slide solos, now he gets nothing.

Chris used to idolize Radiohead, now he idolizes Beyonce.

Chris used to be able to hit all the notes, now he just dances.

Add on to the list you guys.

...well. Chris actually hit the high notes when I saw them.

And the Jay-Z thing made me laugh.

What I mean is: I think they're better than ever!

They used to be rock, now they're pop.

--- Is that a bad thing? I don't think they were ever truly 'rock'. Sure, Viva la Vida is quite a poppy track but what else on the album is pop?

They use to be endearingly self-depricating, now it just seems insincere.

--- I think this is because they're so much bigger than they were that any attempts at self-deprecation just screams insincere. I agree with you but it's only Chris that really does this.

Chris used to hang out with Tim from Ash, now it's Jay-Z.

--- How do you know this? Have you been stalking Chris? Has Chris deleted Tim on Facebook? Aww...

Guy used to be a raging alcohol diva, now he just takes photos.

--- Is this not just a huge over-simplification of his life based on what you read about him on your computer?

It used to go "I'm gonna buy a gun and start a war, if you can tell me something worth fighting for", now it goes "those who are dead are not dead, they're just living in my head."

--- What's your point? Lyrics from two Coldplay songs. First is slightly clunky, second a bit more like stoner poetry.

They used to wear pants and a t-shirt, now they wear costumes.

--- If you make an effort on stage your music suddenly becomes awful? Someone should tell Bjork, Bowie, Madonna, U2, etc.

Jonny used to have his amazing slide solos, now he gets nothing.

--- He used to have one. In AROBTTH. Live. Now he gets solos on most of new album.

Chris used to idolize Radiohead, now he idolizes Beyonce.

--- I think they still do idolize Radiohead, they just don't rip them off as much. Which, in my opinion, is a good thing. I think they just have more idols now than they used to. At The Bakery don't they have framed pictures of John Lennon, PJ Harvey, Bjork, Mozart, Jay-Z etc.?

Chris used to be able to hit all the notes, now he just dances.

--- Lovers in Japan has the highest note he's ever sung and he hits it pretty much every night. I think it's easier to hit all the notes if you stand still. But, in front of 20-30,000 people, it's also less interesting to watch.

Also, they started using pre-recorded tracks on the AROBTTH tour so why is it a problem now? It's pretty much standard practice anyway.

I like you!

Every word is sadly true.

SUBMIT TO ORACLE!

Just asked..

"Is Chris still friends with Tim from Ash?"

I have mixed feelings about Coldplay. I missed how they were a few years ago, but at the same time I do like what they have become (mostly).

I see your Viva la Vida and Lovers in Japan, and raise you a Fix You ('tears stream down your face' vocals), Life in Technicolour, and 42... just off the top of my head

Really? I don't remember that at the concert I was at, except maybe 42 in a few parts.. But even then most of the piano and guitar was really being played. I remember distinctly that they were playing guitar, bass, and drums live during Life in Technicolour and I could clearly hear them.

I also was fairly sure they were doing the chants during VLV live as well.. I remember seeing them all singing into the mics during it?

welll i quite agree, they may have crossovered to pop but its still rock and if you listen tot he album more and more , it grows and you think its one of their best albums.!

well, in the end of the day you stilll know that its coldplay and you still love them from start to finish, but the point is, didnt you guys notice X&Y is a bit more commercial and kinda leaning a bit to the pop sound?, then came vlv, so i think coldplay is trying to grab more fanbase than ever from rock fans to pop fans....

well this album roughly already sold 8Million Worldwide and is stilll the top album of 2008 and thats hard to achieve for the crisis the world faces right now. and its stilll selling quite well,. So the point is coldplay wants to reach to more Fan base and probably end up with a more cohesive fan base in the future.

and didnt we get a hint that the next or upcoming album is gonna be a bit jazzy? Jazz fans anyone?

Does "The National Anthem" count?

Doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo doo dooo.
