Yeah, RIGHT.

If you weren't one, you could have just ignored my post.

Fanboys/girls tend to do that..

So by acknowledging your comment, that makes me a fanboy? The fact that you posted that you hated Viva La Vida out of nowhere when you're on a Coldplay fansite and I acknowledged it, makes me a fanboy. Kinda stretching it there, don't you think?

Ahh.. I have stated way too many times that I don't like Viva.

It isn't new.

Sorry. Didn't know. I don't follow your posts.

"They are nice guys, that's true. But everytime Chris was asked questions regarding the plagiarism suit, he would say that sometimes there are things that they will just not admit of doing and say no to simply because it's not true."

True, but given the lads (especially Chris') personalities, I really think a drawn out court battle would take a heavy toll on them (and the band). I really think a quiet and quick resolution to this is the best possible outcome.

And I agree with him. They can be nice, but there are times when they need to make a stand.

But yeah..the case is closed now anyway. I hope this is for the best.

Satriani should stfu now and go buy some ice cream to cheer him up with the money that he gets from Coldplay.

Really?

They actually payed him? Hos. They should have taken it to court after all. :P

Just for making such a bad album with a bad song like VLV.

/rant.

And you have how many grammy awards?

And you have how many grammy awards?

Same question goes for you, blind fan.

Seriously, you can just ignore me, I'm free to express my opinion.

You, as a rational person, could respect that, or ask me a stupid question like that grammy thing.

WINNING GRAMMY'S MEANS SHIT. I'm tired of saying that, they won't be better or worse because they have grammys or not. It's just a stupid award. The real treasure is music.

Discuss.

Just because both parties settled and the case was dismissed does not mean that money was handed over. First of all, the case was dismissed without prejudice which means Joe can not sue Coldplay. Secondly, remember those videos of those songs that came out before "I'm Gonna Fly" which "I'm Gonna Fly" sounded like? Wasn't that handed over to Coldplay's legal team? That could have been thrown in Joe's face and he might've figured that he would have to fight two battles - one proving Coldplay ripped off his song and the other being that he didn't rip off those artists.

Unfortunately, when a case is settled behind closed doors people assume the defendent is guilty and that money is handed over, and that is not necessarly true.

Exactly. But all the Coldplay haters wanna say is "SEE! Coldplay paid him off! They were guilty!" Just pisses me the fuck off!

Music “rights” gone too far?

On Dec. 4, 2008, fusion rocker Joe Satriani filed a lawsuit against the collective members of Coldplay for copyright infringement in the band’s song “Viva la Vida.” Coldplay’s hit allegedly stole “substantial, original portions” from Satriani’s 2004 release, “If I Could Fly,” a musical love letter written for his wife.

He claimed to have suffered “substantial damage to his professional reputation … as well as losses in an amount not yet ascertained.” A listener of both artists, I was particularly curious to know what of Satriani’s underground fusion compositions made its way onto the radio by way of Coldplay. Once familiarized with both songs, I was disappointed.

What Satriani dramatized as a blatant act of musical burglary was little more than a musical coincidence. True, both songs use a similar chord progression, but the melodies in question share little more than an opening motif.

In an exclusive interview with Musicradar.com, Satriani recounted the moment he heard Coldplay’s performance.

“I felt like a dagger went right through my heart. It hurt so much … I spent so long writing the song, thinking about it, loving it, nursing it … and then somebody comes along and plays the exact same song and calls it their own,” Satriani said.

I don’t doubt Satriani’s musical intimacy. What I think he is forgetting is that there are only so many ways 12 notes can be arranged — a thought which leads me to the most amusing part of this story.

While Satriani may have been the only one to file a lawsuit, he has not been alone in his assertions. Both Cat Stevens and indie-band Creaky Boards also claimed to be the original authors of “Viva la Vida.”

Is there something wrong with this picture? Three musicians, all claiming to have written Coldplay’s hit before they did? That’s not to mention “Francés limón” by Argentine rock band Los Enanitos Verdes, which in my opinion most resembles (and predates) Satriani’s work.

Online viewers have pointed out even more similarities in other songs, from a 1940s jazz standard to novelty icon Günther’s “Teeny Weeny String Bikini.”

Pretending for a moment that Satriani really was deliberately plagiarized, what notable “damages” could possibly occur between artists operating in such different musical markets?

Based on the fan base and quality of music produced by artist, I hardly think any Satriani fan would stop buying his CDs because they heard “Viva la Vida” on an iPod commercial.

Fortunately — if only for my own sanity — the case was dropped two weeks ago. According to Billboard.com, it seems that a financial settlement between both parties has finally been reached without requiring Coldplay to admit unlawful behavior.

While I am relieved to see this whole case come to a close, I wonder how many more trials of “stolen intellectual property” will continue before we appreciate the fact that our judicial system is not in place to coddle our egos. It should be a means of supporting reasonable claims against legitimate offenses that threaten the human welfare. Viva la legal abuse.

Most of the posters in this thread are complete and utter morons. First off, why would you want Coldplay to have taken this to court? There's a reason settling is the better option, you are an idiot if you want this dragged out in a court case that will just end up making all sides look bad.

Second, stop saying retarded things about Satch. He's not using money to buy drugs, and contrary to popular belief, he didn't just think up this law suit to be a big meanie-head to Coldplay. He truly believed he had a case, and he's entitled to that. Anyone who lowers themselves to personal insults is worse than he is.

And for all you idiots who assume he has no fans, no career, and no musical talent, I severely pity you.

^BTW that's a great article you posted there, Ian.

That **** doesn't deserve a single penny. :dozey:

agree

If you think about it, this is actually a win for coldplay. See, if they were to lose the case, not only would they have to pay Satriani for damages, but they would have to admit they used his song. So win.

Q&A: Joe Satriani Can't Talk About His Case Against Coldplay. But He'll Glady Talk Being Left Off Rolling Stone's List of Top 100

Q&A: Joe Satriani Can't Talk About His Case Against Coldplay. But He'll Glady Talk Being Left Off Rolling Stone's List of Top 100 Guitarists...

Joe Satriani is considered by many to be one of the best guitar players in the world. Although excluded from Rolling Stone's list of the top 100 guitar players of all time, Satriani has taught such legendary string benders as Steve Vai and Mettalica's Kirk Hammett.

And, besides doing the solo thing, Satriani has also found time to play with Mick Jagger, Deep Purple and the Sammy Hagar-led supergroup Chickenfoot.

Though known primarily for his super-speedy technique, Satriani is actually a skilled composer who brings a lot more to his music than just shredding.

In advance of his performance at the Granada Theater tonight, Satriani was gracious enough to recently give DC9 a little time to chat with him during a tour stop in Canada. After the jump, he shares with us his thoughts on teaching guitar, playing with Jagger and why Rolling Stone sucks.

What's more rewarding, playing guitar or teaching it?

I've not taught guitar for a long time. Teaching was fun, at times. Other times, it was just my day job. I much prefer making albums and touring.

When Mick Jagger asked you to play in his touring band, were you nervous?

No, not at all. Mick was great. I've had a chance to play with many people I admire. When Mick asked, I jumped at that chance. Playing in front of that many people is something that every guitar player dreams about. Getting to share the stage with your heroes is incredible.

Are there certain artists whose material is harder to learn?

Not really. The challenge is performing live and getting the audience to have a good time. That's always a challenge. I think all performers share this challenge. With Mick, it was unusual in that people had a hard time accepting Mick as a solo artist. People had to get it out of their heads that this wasn't a concert by The Rolling Stones.

When Rolling Stone published its list of the best 100 guitar players of all time, your name was seen by many as one of the major omissions. Have you ever wondered why you were not on that list?

Everyone knows that Rolling Stone is shit. That list was made to be provocative, to get attention. And to Rolling Stone's credit, the list has gotten that attention.

Where were you when you heard the Coldplay song "Viva La Vida"? Did you immediately think they ripped off your "If I Could Fly" song?

I think I heard it in the mall. But I can't talk about that. There are legal issues that still have to be worked out. I really can't talk about that.

Is there a worse band name than Chickenfoot?

Hey, [sammy] Hagar came up with that. I think someone called him that when he was a kid. But playing with Hagar is fun. The crowds are lively. Both the band and the crowd really get into the shows.

This tour you are playing smaller venues. Would you rather play the smaller venues than the stadiums or arenas?

That's a trick question. Everyone wants to play in front of 80,000 people because then you know that you've been financially successful. But I've been in bands that were playing huge venues that were only half full, and it's hard getting in sync with the audience. Playing the more intimate venues is perfect for connecting with the audience.

Your 1993 album, The Extremist, is often cited by critics and fans as your best effort. What is it about that album that has made it such a favorite?

I don't know. I am proud of all of my albums. I have this new one called Black Swans and Wormhole Wizards and I am very proud of it. I feel very lucky to play my songs in front of an audience.

Has your audience always been mostly male-dominated?

Yes, but I think that's changing. On this current tour, I've seen a lot of women. Also, I've never seen such a range of ages before. I like to think my music can appeal to other people besides male guitar players.
