Christmas release is back on! Brian Eno talks to BBC6 Music (of all sources) about Coldplay recordin

The producer tries out different band combo’s to get new ‘fresh’ sound

Brian Eno has revealed he is back working with Coldplay on their 5th album.

This week saw Brian unveiled as guest artistic director of the 44th Brighton festival. It will see him heavily involved curating, presenting, lecturing and performing during the month of May. However, he told 6 Music he’ll still have time to help the band out: "I seem to be able to fit things in. I don't sleep that much."

Earlier this week Coldplay front man Chris Martin revealed to a Brazilian TV crew, he hoped the album would be out by Christmas, which Eno agrees could be possible: "I think it could be. It's quite different from anything they've done before I think, so far anyway. I don't know how it will end up being, but it's very fresh."

When Eno worked with the band in 2008 on Viva La Vida, he notoriously removed Chris Martin from the equation for the first few weeks to try a new way of working with them in the studio. He felt giving the rest of the band space to experiment without any vocals was key to widening the scope of their sound and the ability to explore all their options.

This time round he says he will do the same, but also try out different band pairings to see what they come up with: "I think that if you have a group of four people, that's lots of possible combinations. You can have any one of them on their own, and you can have lots of couples within that four. A and B, A and C, A and D. I think every one of those is a unique musical entity that will produce something unique."

While he does admit Chris Martin is a very ‘inspired and dominant personality’ within the band, he says the aim is not just to stop him having a steer on things: "It's not rocket science, and it’s not Svengali-ism either. It's not some attempt to subvert the band, but just to see what other possibilities are lurking within them that might not come out within their normal working situations.

"If you head to Coldplay's blog on their website, it makes it clear Brian has met his match, in four very willing participants: "A single song can exist in several very different forms all within the same day. The mood can go from elation at striking upon a new melody, to a complete loss of confidence and then back to "I can't wait 'til Brian hears this" all within a few hours. The rate of progress is astonishing."

Thank you for that, Ian!

Another one not sleeping much, eh?

Sounds good that he says it's possible.

I'm waiting for EMI's response.

Yeah me too. This time it's unlikely that we'll see a repeat tweet from 6Music!

Thanks for posting Ian, I always did believe Chris and Jonny over EMI, now there's 3 of them saying it

Brian does the right thing, they really need to try some new things/combinations.... would be great if the guys would really express what THEY want to.  ^_^

CAN'T WAIT FOR THE NEW ALBUM !!!!!!!! :laugh3: \m/

I agree

 Well, that's me even more excited. I'm not holding too much hope for the Christmas release, but we'll see. I'm thinking if not then definitely early 2011 which is not too long a wait. :D :D

I still think that the band/Eno & EMI may both be right. Yes, the album may be finished and ready to go in December, but it's EMI's decision when it's actually released. Why they would want to postpone it is beyond me, but big business can be baffling.

I am very, very curious to hear what they will come up with. And I think it's a great statement to Chris that he is so willing to step back and relinquish some control. That's not easy for an "inspired and dominate personality." :laugh3:

Thank for the article Ian :D

hope that this "fresh" doesn't mean "pop" ... anyway I'm hopefull!

I serious doubt this. I just hope they don't become so 'experimental' that they lose sight of their strengths, i.e. strong flowing melodies, etc.

:D

Oh sorry, Viva La Vida? Violet Hill?

 Thx for this article Ian!! Sounds promising!! As for the release date, I think there is a difference between 'could' and 'will' :dozey:

I'm pumped for this. :wacky:

Oh please, please, please, please. :bomb: :santa3:

Oh sorry, Viva La Vida? Violet Hill?

Exactly. Don't get me wrong, those songs were great fun but from all the little tidbits Chris has shared about #5, they are looking to scale back. And they've also said they are not looking for Parachutes #2. I can't wait to hear what "arrives," as they like to say.

Thank you for that, Ian!

Me three. :D

I had a dream last night that they released their new album and it was made of techno/trance songs :stunned:

Oh dear. I certainly hope dreams don't come true. :P

Pink is right about the EMI situation, however. Regardless of whatever the band's agenda is, they ultimately do not have the final say regarding the release date as long as they're under that label.

i agree, Im eager to her the new sounds that come up through the pairings. Maybe we'll get some really wierd cool sounds similar to Radiohead.

Refreshing to see some journalists doing their job for once. My kudos to the 6 Music staff. Rather than merely repeating release rumors they double checked sources. EMI didn't know for sure when the release is happening (like Coldplay would tell them how studio sessions are going- that's the easiest way to be stuck with a deadline you never wanted...). When that answer wasn't enough, they started questioning one of the producers about it and got a clearer answer: A great big maybe. As in not for sure, but not a no either. Journalistic integrity isn't dead after all. :nice: I was worried for a bit there.
