I find that most of my Musical Taste "eras" are hugely based off of specific bands which I typically get into obsessions with listening to. So keep in mind that a lot of these different stages typically cross over between eachother.

Pre-2001 (pre-12): For me music was a part of my life but I didn't really explore any bands on my own or actively listen/play music. It was primarily the influence of my dad that I listened to all the music. The only band that really comes to mind is The Beatles, though I did listen to a lot of the classic rock songs/stations that he did to as well mainly because that's what was on in the car/house/etc.

2001-2002 (12-13): Believe it or not it was right after 9/11 that there was a tv call in to send in money in effort to help out the families and clean up effort as well as honor the firefighters and police officers. It was called the Concert for NY. At that show I was watching it not only for it being to honor those people, but also see Paul McCartney play, who was the last to play. At the concert The Who played and they were really amazing. So from there I got into them and that is when I opened the floodgates to getting into other bands. From there I focused most of my listening to classic rock bands. So artists like Led Zeppelin and Pink Floyd were the main bands that I really listened to over and over again. I dove into their back catalog and listened to them inside and out. At the same time I also really started getting into the solo works of The Beatles because being so familiar with that band I wanted to explore what they did outside of the band. Of course there were tons of other "classic rock" bands that I listened to as well (like Queen, David Bowie, Elton John, Billy Joel, The Doors, The Rolling Stones). Another reason for me getting into a lot of these artists was I was just starting to learn how to play guitar so I looked to a lot of the guitar works of these bands for inspiration and striving to a level I wanted to achieve... though I never even came close :P. Guitarists include Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin), David Gilmour (Pink Floyd), and Pete Townshend (The Who)

2003-2004 (14-15) The classic rock phase of my musical taste continued well into High School, so I still was into all of the bands listed above fairly heavily, though I wasn't into The Who nearly as much. At this point Led Zeppelin sort of was on the back burner a little bit and Pink Floyd was a big band that I continued to like. However there was one band that I was completely obsessed with at this time, Van Halen. Looking back I can't believe how much I loved this band. I practically breathed the band. At the time I was so into great guitar players that hearing the works of Eddie Van Halen blew me away. So for a good amount of time here They were the only band that I pretty much listened to.

2005-2006 (16-17): It was kind of strange but then after a while I didn't listen to Van Halen as much. The next phase of music taste had began and from this point on there would be very few moments that I would really go back and heavily listen to classic rock artists (though of course there are exceptions). At this time I was in my aunt's car and she was playing a CD by a band called Coldplay. I found the music to be so different than music I was listening to prior but I really liked it a lot. I ended up getting A Rush of Blood to the Head and really loved their music so much. This was the moment in time that I began to look forward at music rather than backwards (in terms of older bands/current). I really really got into the band I'd say a few months/weeks from the release of X&Y. They were once again one of those bands that I constantly listened to and I played X&Y so much that I never thought I'd get sick of it. I also was sure to give a listen to all of their older work as well as dive into their b-side catalog. It just could not get enough of this band. However after listening so much I wanted to find other bands that were similar. So there was a brief period of time that I got into U2, and was really amazed with Achtung Baby. Then I think from there I began to learn about another band at the end of 2006. This band was Radiohead. Also at this time I got into Oasis for a while thinking they were a lot like The Beatles.

2007-2008 (18-19): Radiohead has been the one band that I'd say I've been obsessed with the most. Of course the Beatles have had a much longer influence, but Radiohead have had a big influence on my tastes. I initially listened to the band sometime around 2001-2002, from a friend of my brothers who gave me OK Computer. I felt the band to be extremely depressing... especially the vocals. I did however like Karma Police and Exit Music. Back to the end of 2006 I was just starting college. I was in a new location in terms of school and people I was around. So I guess it fit well to get into a new band. I really got into the band heavily in 2007 while waiting for their upcoming release which would be In Rainbows. I can't tell you how much I listened to this band. These two years I listened to them so much, and it only fueled the fire by getting to see them live twice. During this era I had a period of time that I looked back and was into Pink Floyd for a while as well as Bob Dylan too. Also during this period of time I started to really get into Beck. He was a big artist for me and I looked up to him so much as a songwriter. I really loved how each album was so different from the next. Also I loved how he was able to have so many different genres of music incorporated within his albums/songs. Also it opened me op to being more tolerant of various genres, especially Rap/Hip Hop. Also at this time I began to listen to the Arcade Fire, and also saw them at the end of 2007. They really blew me away and were one band that I had a good few months where they were what I primarily listened to, but I then took a break for a while. Another few artists that I really got into were Panda Bear, MGMT, The Flaming Lips.

2009-Present (20-21): I continued to listen to Radiohead during this time as well as Beck. I found that their music also really opened my eyes into the world of electronica, and I started listening to bands like Boards of Canada, Ratatat, Four Tet and others. At this time I think my music tastes really exploded in that there aren't really many bands that I can focus and say defined this period of time. I got into many different bands like Animal Collective, Beach House, Broken Social Scene, Metric, Grizzly Bear, The National, Andrew Bird, Sigur Ros. Another artist I also really got into was The Album Leaf. It was very relaxing music, and since then I have also looked out for more relaxed/post-rock bands (Explosions in the Sky, Jonsi & Alex, etc). At this time, especially this year I rediscovered Arcade Fire and really got into them a lot! I had liked them a lot before but having new music, as well as seeing them live has helped me fall in love with the band. I also ended up rediscovering U2 and having them be one of my favorite bands. Lastly I have found that especially this year I have been listening to many more artists with female vocalists (Metric, Land of Talk, Beach House, Stars).

For the future I really have no idea where things will go. I'd imagine at least for sometime I'd continue listening to the bands and genres as I do now, but I feel that it would be very naiive of me to say I will know what I like in the future especially since clearly my tastes have changed so much.

Key bands for me over the years

The Beatles

The Who

Led Zeppelin

Pink Floyd

Van Halen

Coldplay

Radiohead

Beck

U2

Arcade Fire

ok

here we go

I'll start with pre 12

pre 12: I wasn't really into music then. I think the main problem was that I couldn't speak english. Most of the popular songs were in english and whenever someone asked me what my favourite band or song was I replied with a song I could say or write (there was a song called "It's cool man"...that was my usual reply...)...oooh and I loved the Smurfs....I don't even know if they released CDs in other countries haha....but it was the Smurfs singing popular songs with different lyrics....One album was called "Techno is cool" so I said as well that I am in love with Techno omg hahaah....

so I got my first CD on Easter I don't know which year it was...probably 1998 or 1999: The Spice Girls-Spice world....well, I liked them. Some months later (I think it must have been my birthday) I got another CD: Ace of Base-Best of....I still don't know why I liked Ace of Base....must have been another phenomen of knowing how to write the band's name.

12-14: I mostly listened to charts stuff I think. But I didn't buy CDs...just listenend to it on the radio. My parents never really listened to music so they could never introduce me to good music. edit: wait i remember listening to my Dad's Dire Straits-Money for nothing Cd and playing mini playback show haahah...I still remember my performance to "Money for nothing"....my big sister influenced my music taste though and she actually made me listen to music.

I think at the age of 12 it was the first time that I bought a CD on my own: Travis-The invisible band....I put it on my walkman and I remember going on a class trip and we were on a train and I put it on and felt SO cool.

I think there is nothing else that should get a mention here.

14-15 omg...probably the worst year in my music evolution. Here's the story: I was watching music Television and they were introducing 5 guys from florida who moved into a house in Munich to start a career in Germany. I was madly in love with them. well, with one in particular. I loved their music as well (well, obviously because i was in love with them haha)....I explained myself if somebody asked me why I liked them that they play instruments wooohooooo...btw the band was: Natural...don't know if anybody knows them.

well, I am sure every girl just needs a boyband phase haha...

so, I went to their concert (my poor big sister who had to go there with me) and some months later I suddenly started hating them haha....strange because that was right after the one I loved most was having a girlfriend:wacky:

Coldplay released a rush of blood to the head. I don't know how I decided to love them. I think it was because of "in my place"....yeah I was in the bathroom listening to the radio and fell in love with in my place (oh god....I will go further now: I was actually sitting on the toilet while I fell in love with it:freak:...why did I mention this?]

I bought the album and fell in love with it. Natural was history. I remember writing in my "diary": "Fuck Natural. I listen to quality stuff now: Coldplay, Travis...omg I fell in love with Amsterdam. "

15-19: depressed years in puberty. I don't know how it happened. But I think I felt bad/depressed more often than feeling happy, well that is how I remember it. The years I became "one" with the music I was listening to (omg haah). Pretty intense. I introduced myself to bands like Radiohead, Sigur Ros, Beck, Jefferson Airplane, The Doors, The white Stripes, The Who, Neil Young....there is much more to name, but I do remember certain situations with those bands. Or how I got introduced to them.

It was the time I started listening to a lot of 60s Psychedelic stuff. Which I still love. It was the stuff I listened to when I felt good. When I felt bad or depressed I listened to radiohead and Sigur Ros stuff. How well I remember crying my heart out to this music omg. It helped me to get rid of my bad feelings, to write them down.

I could tell a lot of stories now, like: How I started loving the doors, how I the magic of Sigur Ros hit me, how radiohead was going through my veins....

but I won't....it would make my post much too long and I will add something in general related to this at the end of my post.

19-22 (now): years at uni. AND the first time (and last time so far...in real life) I got to know someone who was as much into music as I was, into the same music (most of it). He introduced me to some new music mainly Funk and soul music. I play the saxophone myself and every weekend we went into our favourite club and they only played that music. That was from 2007-2008, probably the best year so far when it comes to meeting people...in general I kept listening to a wide range of music from classical to funk to rock to electronical to psychedelic.

general note about this question: Oh well, it became really hard for me to answer this question when it comes to the years between 15 and 22. There was so much stuff I listened to. From many genres. Music was always a part of my life, well it started with making music at the age of 3. That must have been the basis. At the age of 15 and onwards I started adding my emotions to it. Not even while listening to music, but also when playing the saxophone for example. I started defining myself and others with music. I have a music related job. I have music related hobbies. I want to have music related friends.

The beauty of this art has shaped my personality within the years. I really feel like failing at answering this question when it comes to the years between 15 and 22. My reply sounds so weak there although it was/is so intense. I just can't just name bands or genres. There are many bands where I just like a few songs. I think I have named the bands I own most albums by.

There are so many random songs I know. and people think I know so much about music, but then I fail at naming certain genres and bands (I feel I have done in this post).

I can tell you what I don't like: New Indie bands....I can be quite ignorant about them:uhoh: yes Indie kids please come and kill me (and extreme stuff like metal or hardcore techno or something like that, but I am no as likely to get mad about thoe people than about Indie kids haha)

I hope I will find my music related friends one day. I have such a huge passion for it and I can't share it with anybody (well, kind of)

Looking back at those years now it makes me proud that I always went my own way even if there weren't people who loved the same stuff like me, because I always knew that it will change one day.-

I definitely can't wait for my music related future.

(I have added faaaaar too much off-topic emotional stuff now ahhh)

(sorry for the long post)

1-13. Growing up I would read with my mom at night and we'd listen to classical or Celtic music tapes (Mozart, Pachelbel's Canon, Lifescapes etc.). I liked random artists like Simon and Garfunkel and Billy Gilman, but I disliked most music on the radio, so if asked my favorite music I'd just say 'classical'.

13-15. These years I started burning mixes of random songs I liked spanning from u2 to five for fighting to killers to green day. But generally I hardly owned any c.d's. After hearing the song boulevard of broken dreams green day (embarrasingly) became my favorite group for a couple years. I still have Dookie and American Idiot pretty much memorized though I haven't listened to them in years.

15-16. In 2005 my brother let me take Coldplay's X&Y to a camp, and I quickly became obsessed. Between that, The Shins' 'Oh, inverted world' and u2's 'how to dismantle...' I became bored by the repetitive power chords of green-day and tapped into music with a more spiritual flavor. I later bought Parachutes and AROBTTH, and both albums gave me a bigger high than anything before them.

17-18. As an established coldplay fan-boy, my older brother introduced me to Radiohead who would become the soundtrack to my freshman year in college (along with The Verve, The Frames and a regained interest in Beethoven and Chopin).

My second year I became obsessed with shoegaze a-la My Bloody Valentine, and Slowdive for a period. Then I discovered Sigur Ros on this forum, and they proved as revolutionary to my taste as coldplay was. I listened to them obsessively for the remainder of the year along with Jon Hopkins and Arcade Fire.

19-present. Via Sigur Ros I gradually explored the world of post-rock bands, and for the past year have collected works by Eluvium, Explosions In the Sky, Hammock, Helios etc. etc. Right now I feel like I'm just filling in the corners of my collection with genre's and sounds that I haven't picked up yet. I'm proud of all my pop-rock stuff which I listen to a lot, but when I get bored I don't just want a new artist, I want something unlike everything else I've heard before. Lately I've been listening to a lot of Max Richter and Olafur Arnalds type stuff.

Thanks guys, I've just finished reading every post in the thread and it's made me happy that people have taken it seriously. I enjoyed writing my post and I enjoyed reading other peoples. This is probably my favourite thread which I have created and I hope more people post. If this was the last post I'd still be really happy though. I could read about this topic for ages.

Country music.

Then mainstream and /70's/80's/90's music.

Then my favourite artists consisted of things like Green Day, Billy Talent, Good Charlotte, etc.

I was such a big Green Day fangirl. :blank:

Moved on to Coldplay style music (Coldplay, The Verve, The Fray, etc.).

Picky for a while, listened to anything easily accessible.

A bit of a post-rock phase.

And finally, my current music taste.

Thrilling stuff.

ok i'll write what i can remember now and edit as i remember things

10-13

whatever my brother had on his computer including some classics. one song that i remember very well was a crappy radio rip of November Rain, i also remember the thong song by sisqo i think it was and whereever you will go by the Calling. this was also the time when i first started listening to linkin park who i discovered through my obsession with dragonballz, a lot of the dbz montages online used LP as background music. i also became quite the eminem fan with songs like sing for the moment and the way i am and stan. but in terms of new music it was restricted to whatever was in the top 4 or 5 of the charts.

13-15

this was when i got my own computer and a dial up internet connection. so when i wasnt looking up porn i was downloading whatever song was popular at the time. i would determine my downloads by looking through the ads for ringtones they would have in the paper. so my playlist was usually a reflection of the most popular ringtones of the time. linkin park was still my favourite but amidst all my teenage angst i really started to like simple plan and good charlotte. being into rock music had a emo tag attached to it, so i would usually download a lot of usher, 50 cent, nelly and christina aguilera. i really hated coldplay at this stage

15-17

the defining moment for me was Live8. the event started around 11pm sydney and went right through the night into the late morning. at this stage my passion for music was really coming through, so i stole my brothers discman radio and listened to the event right through. i heard pink floyd, the who, paul mccartney, elton john, u2, coldplay, muse and the killers. and my eyes were opened to the amazing world of rock n roll and i havent looked back since. from that point i started listening to my local rock station and went on to discover the stones, led zep, queen, ac/dc and inxs. i also fell in love with coldplay after hearing The Scientist for the first time and buying x&y the day it came out.

17-present

it was oct.10 2007 when it all changed for me. i was just flicking through radio stations and i accidentally tuned into triple j a station i never listened to. but i heard this voice i knew i had heard somewhere before and the DJ kept saying mentioning radiohead. then i remembered an article that was on the front page of the paper the day before about radiohead releasing their album for free. so i put two n two together and sat back and enjoyed the music with little expectations. by the end of the album i was simply amazed, i couldnt believe the shear quality and brilliance of the music i had just heard. i wouldnt say i developed any sort of hatred for commercial music at that point rather i began to admire the beauty of listening to an album from start to finish. and i havent looked back since. of course radiohead has gone on to become one of my favourite bands.

OK, my turn!

pre-13: I grew up on a rural property and went to a small primary school where kids really didn't care that much about music, myself included. Although I've always been the most muscially-minded in my family, at that point in time I only really listened to whatever was playing on the radio (classic rock) or whatever my friends were listening to. My first ever album was Dido, haha.

13-18: I felt myself being drawn towards music but I never really found a band that I loved for ages. I used to listen to a lot of instrumental music (mostly from movies, my favourite was from Pirates of the Caribbean) and then just whatever my friends were into because I didn't know how to find new music. The main one I remember being "into" was Lostprophets. I also liked Greenday but easily grew bored of the repetitiveness of this sort of music. I also liked the Presets, but everyone did :P The only band I really 'discovered' on my own at this point in time was The Killers, still one of my favourite bands to date. I also grew a strong dislike for the classic-rock radio station my parents used to listen to because I just got sick of hearing the same songs. Eventually they switched to a more modern "rock" station (featuring the likes of Nickelback etc) but I rarely heard a song that really grabbed my attention. Then one day I heard Starlight by Muse on said station and instantly fell in love with it. I decided I had to try to find out more about this band and started listening to them on the internet and found their music so different to what I was used to listening to and so refreshing that I went and bought Black Holes & Revelations straight away; the beginning of an obsession that led me to getting their entire collection of albums, b-sides and a few live/random recordings. I also saw an ad for Coldplay's Viva La Vida on TV around this time and spontaneously ordered it because I'd heard some Coldplay songs and loved them. It wasn't long before I had their entire set of albums too, but I wasn't quite as obsessed with them as with Muse. For quite a while then if anyone asked what I listened to I'd just say "Muse, Coldplay and the Killers." And that really was all I listened to.

18-19 (now): Eventually my obsession for Muse faded and I grew bored of listening to the same music, though I still love all three of those bands.

Last year I went to my first concert ever- Coldplay. I was so blown away by the show that I re-developed my obsession for the band and signed up to this forum. When I got over this I decided that I wanted to find more music that was like the stuff I knew and loved, so I went into the World of Music section to see what people on here listened to - and I haven't looked back since. I know it's only really been just over a year since I started really getting into music but I feel like I've come a long way in this time. It also means that pretty much all the bands I listen to now are bands that have released an album in the last year or two :P

Dominating my library now:

Arcade Fire, Editors, Vampire Weekend, Kasabian, Radiohead, The Temper Trap, Florence And the Machine, Foals, Mumford & Sons, Arctic Monkeys, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, Elbow, Eskimo Joe, Oasis, Phoenix, Delphic, Two Door Cinema Club, The Strokes, White Lies, Powderfinger, U2 (who have kinda been there the whole way through, I just never used to listened to whatever of theirs wasn't played on the radio. Even though my Dad was/is a huge fan of theirs), and of course I still listen to The Killers, Coldplay and Muse, plus other bands of all different genres including a few more folky ones like Animal Collective and Fleet Foxes. I've only recently started being able to tolerate hip-hop too, so my taste is still ever-changing. Like deaths_friend I really rely on Triple J for discovering new music and it's very reliable.

Long story short: I've finally discovered the sort(s) of music that I love :D

Okay here goes,

6-9: Spice Girls - The only word in my volcabulary.

10: No music what so ever. A dark time in my life. Music was nothing to me. Too much peer pressure with my friends trying to get me to listen to 50 cent and what not, so I just stopped listening to music. :(

11: Lady Gaga and absolute mainsteam overload. -.-

12-14 (My current age, god. I'm so young): It's quite a funny story actually. I only liked Coldplay because when they came down to Australia () for Sound Relief, Chris jumped off the stage and ran through the crowd and I thought that was the coolest thing ever. So I went completley fangirl. I also recently tried to get to know some Aussie music, but every time I fell in love with a band, I find out they were british; Kasabian for example. :D Also I. Love. MUUUUUUUSSSEEE! Sorry about that spaz attack.

So, bascially I love british music. But, I'm also a huge fan of My Chemical Romance, The Killers, Green Day, Paramore and Gorillaz.

Ugh. I've probably bored the crap ouuta everyone. :laugh3:
