I've never understood the Radiohead - Coldplay comparisons. The two bands have completely different sounds in my opinion. However in the who's better debate, it's pretty obvious that Radiohead are the superior act.

Coldplay have a tried and tested formula which so far in their career they haven't strayed away from, which is why all three albums so far, sound very similar.

Radiohead on the other hand have proven themselves to be a much more versatile group musically. All their albums are very distinct, with the possible exception of Kid A and Amnesiac which were recorded at the same time; but even these two albums, to me are quite different.

As much as I like Coldplay, I don't think anything they have done to date, can compare to OK Computer and The Bends which are the two greatest albums ever recorded IMO.

Please feel free to disagree with me.

ok i will disagree with u! i think bits on the bends and ok computer sound simaler indeed.....

I won't disagree with you, but I think comparing the growth or diversity (between albums) of a fairly young band to one that has been around and making albums for 10+ years is unfair in all sorts of levels.

Pablo Honey and The Bends are pretty similar in style, The Bends being better album (kind of like ARoBttH is better than Parachutes, in my opinion). OK Computer follows closely behind, but it's not quite the same as Bends or PH.. just like X&Y follows closely behind ARoBttH and Parachutes, but the techniques and styles used are so different, one can't quite say it's the same as the past two. So saying "Radiohead is definitely the superior act" is unbalanced because you're basing that on Radiohead's 6 albums to Coldplay's 3. We don't know how "superior" Coldplay will be come 3 more albums.

It speaks volumes (to me) that what Radiohead did in 3 albums, Coldplay also did. Only a lot bigger. I think they'll be an incredible, incredible band as time passes. Just give them a chance, eh? ;)

What if Coldplay would try to be more like Radiohead?

Coldplay, first off should not copy Radiohead......

I'm a pretty big time Coldplay fan(AROBTTH was one of my first great albums). They have so much talent it's stupid. But that's why it's frustrating. With each album they've released they have sunk deeper into themselves. Is anyone else with me? Instead of experimenting such as Radiohead and coming up with new ideas and re-inventing themselves they seem to be playing into what they've already done. They should experiment with Electronica or something. Maybe try doing experimental songs like Sigur Ros. I just feel they are not living up to their potiential.Parachutes is GREAT. AROBTTH is very good but similar to Parachutes. X&Y has a coupl of great tracks but falls WAY short. Just not as original.(I love the Blue Room EP too.) I hope they get in gear. Other wise they will be the band that could have been for me. Anyone with agree?

First off, welcome to Coldplaying! :nice:

That's why I love Coldplay. What you get from them is the 'Coldplay Package.' There's nothing else like it. It's their own. If they experimented and reinvented themselves like Radiohead did, then it just wouldn't be Coldplay. It worked for Radiohead, but I don't think it would work for Coldplay. One reason why fans like them is for their sound, and how melodic their music is. Doing Electronica would just kinda throw off their style and the way the lyrics are delivered.

But hey, that's just MY two cents. I don't know about everyone else...

**BTW: AROBTTH is also one of the finest albums I own! :)

I thought Coldplay were accused of copying Radiohead when they got famous?

I think Coldplays sound has changed - for the better, as a band they seem to be getting better.

Parachutes was fantastic when it came out, but compared to the other two it sounds dull and dated.

I want some ice cream, but all I have is peanut butter. Why can't my peanut butter be more like ice cream?

Well I actually didn't mean to name the thread "what if Coldplay tried to be more like Radiohead"....that wasn't what I meant....I do want Coldplay to be Coldplay...

But I feel that they are repeating themselves a little. But I don't know. They're the famous band and I'm not. But by be more like Radiohead I meant re-invent themselves not copy them or anything. I think they could do melodic electronica. They are that talented. Chris has one of the best if not the best voice in music today. X&Y doesn't sound exactly like their earlier ones. The main thing is it sounds a little overdone. Alot of it is the production, not actually the bands fault. They could pull off Sigur Ros type Shoegazer/Slowcore.....I would love that....I don't think Parachutes sounds dated. It has the best songs they've writen. Although AROBTTH is the better over all record. I guess I just want them to explore more.

Sorry for dissing you guys favorite band...

Trust me....Coldplay is in my top three...always one of my favorites...but I'm gonna be objectional. Even if it means I don't like everyting they've done or whatever. I have seen them live and they ruled. The multi-media is excelent. Overal great show. Do any of you know who Sigur Ros is? () is one of my favorite albums too.

It's funny that you say that because when A Rush of Blood to the Head came out, the message boards went all psycho saying they sold out and it doesn't sound anything like Parachutes and it's a pile of shit and so on. Now everyone says they love it and that X&Y is commercial shit and over produced and not as good as Rush of Blood and blah blah blah. I love each record and Ithink they have progressed. They are not Radiohead and I don't think a band has to reinvent themselves to be good. I think they need to be true to themselves which they have done.

Well I feels like they copied the crap out of U2 on X&Y...their most original stuff is from their first 2 albums.

I don't want them to copy Radiohead.

I want them to explore.

Even if they find out they wnat to be the old Coldplay.

I'd like them to try.

I miss the acoustic guitar on X&Y.

The album felt showy instead of sincere like their last albums.

I never thought they sold out for AROBTTH.

That album is brilliant. The only weak song might be A Wisper. But it's not bad.

So.. you say you want them to explore, yet you miss the acoustic sound that's found all over Parachutes and AROBTTH and not on X&Y? Kinda sounds like you want them to stay the same to me.

I'll never understand why Coldplay need to be like Radiohead. I love RH but that's honestly the last thing on earth I would want. RH can be so lyrically abstract and musically technical, and I just really love that Coldplay sing about love and life and I appreciate Jon's clean riffs without all the other computerized effects. I find it so much easier to listen to and identify with. RH is good at their thing and CP is good at theirs, I see no reason why any of them need to be more like the other.

Chris Martin always said they want to be Radiohead, he even called themselves "Coldhead" or something like that lol

i agree with I'm A ReasonableMan in the point they should experiment more with electronica for example, i also think they will, but hopefully it won't turn out into something very ridiculous.

Coldplay do have a big potential and talent, but for me it looks like they are still little kids (especially Chris Martin's media appearances and in some parts lyrically) who depend from someone else. they finally should find their own way (once again) that they lost in 2003-2004...

I've never noticed any large musical connection between Coldplay and Radiohead but I always find these suttle things which I need to put somewhere or I'll forget them:

The first single and second track on both first albums is a sort of teen-like "I adore you but you don't even look at me" type thing.

Both Jonny's play telecasters primarily.

Politik uses a 'k' ala Packt Sardines

Chris's son is named Moses, Thom's is Noah.

And now I'm pissed off because I thought of so many of these subtle similarities that I now forget. grrrrrrr.

well there definately are some very valid points on here, but none better to my point of view than,

"Let radiohead be radiohead and let coldplay be coldplay"

i certainly dont want to dictate what coldplay should or should not be doing....

Both frontmen are vegetarians :laugh1:

If it really helps.

I'd welcome some experimenting if Coldplay decided to do that, but going into more electronical music would make them similar to Radiohead, I think. I like the way they are, but if the next album is more similar to AROBTTH than to X&Y, it will be great... :)
