They've always been a pop group. Don't be stupid.

So thanks for starting ANOTHER thread about it.

I don't think there a pop group at all. I think people lable things in to broad a manner. Pop is something like Justian Beiber (and there's nothing wrong with that. He's just an example) Lady GaGa would be more of Club-Pop. Dubstep type of groups would just be club music. See what I'm getting at? People just put it all under pop.

I think Coldplay change there sound so much, they can't really be put under a genre. Paradise was acoustic, A Rush of Blood To The Head solidified Alternatives standing in the music buissness, X&Y was a little like ARoBTTH but with space rock elements, etc.

While Mylo Xyloto continues the trend of experimentation with new sounds, songs like Paradise are very different from Lady GaGa, and might be classified as Electro-Alternative or something. I don't really know, and I actually love that. Birtpop, which Coldplay are often labled under, is very different from the kind of pop you are probally thinking about, and if anyone actual read this whole thing, here's my point. I don't think anything can just be labled under "Pop" it's to broad a subject. If you dig deeper into genres you may find something that sounds very close to Mylo Xylotos style. Hurts Like Heaven could be classified as Shoegazing. Just because something is popular doesn't make it pop music. The BEatles are popular, Happiness Is A Warm Gun is not a pop song. Led Zeppelin are popular, Dazed and Confused is not a pop song, etc.

Here's an example I found. It's Waterfall by The Stone Roses. To me it's repeating riff and the way the melody is sung is very reminisent of MX. So no, Coldplay is not a pop band. But they can be just about anything they want to be.:)[ame=http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NrLBlw9WZE&feature=fvst]The Stone Roses - Waterfall - YouTube[/ame]

Sorry for the long post!

Chris and the band always come across, at least to me, as never displaying that attitude that they're too good to perform anywhere. I think they're humbled when they're asked to perform. At least that's the impression I get.

Just because they've performed on a particular show doesn't mean they should be labeled as pop. I still think they're alternative.

And what was cringeworthy for you? The actual performance itself or the fact that the performance was on X-Factor?

you just realized that now?

Nothing wrong with being on Xfactor. That's the show everybody is watching!

They were a pop group long before X-factor..

I had not seen the performance. Thanks for posting it!

I thought the Charlie Brown performance was brilliant! It gave me the goosebumps.

Paradise was good too but his vocals were a little off during certain parts.

Otherwise, great performance.

I really don't get how they could've ever been considered anything but a pop group. Nothing in and of itself wrong with that, essentially the beatles were a pop group.

No, they WERE Metallica and now they're Katy Perry. Clearly.

Just cause ALOT of todays pop music is bad doesn't mean that its a bad thing to make music pop. Pop music is popular music the Beatles would be considered pop wouldnt they? If Coldplay is pop they make good pop music which isn't a bad thing. At least thats how I look at it.

Um, pop = popular, so yes, I guess they are a 'pop' group - just with some rock thrown in for good measure.

I dont think they can be classed as alternative anymore

The fact it was on X-Factor, Selling to the devil so to speak

but thats just my opinion of course

^ Tell me a band that would refuse the free publicity and money from being on a show like that.

And if YOU started a band, and YOU were offered a spot to be on X-Factor, wouldn't you do it? I sure would. Screw all the young people, sitting in their mother's basement, accusing me of being a sellout piece-of-shit. I'm sure they care what we think.

Hmm, the thing with Coldplay, in my opinion, is they were already popular, it's not like they were a new band trying to gain exposure, they already had exposure.. And having them say things like, correct if I'm wrong, they never want to play X-factor or have their songs on Glee..Then turn around and let Glee cover Fix You and then play X-factor...The whole thing just rubbed me the wrong way...I dunno, to me it just makes them look really desperate to appeal to the young pop loving youth.. But hey, that's just me.

That being said, I still love them.. And just cause they are a pop band doesn't mean they are bad.

Oh Katy Perry :dazzled: :awesome: :dazzled: :awesome: :dazzled: :awesome: :dazzled: :awesome: :dazzled: :awesome: :dazzled: :awesome:

+1

The entire argument about how Coldplay appearing on X-Factor and ruining their image is both hilarious and absurd. Any band - small or big - would want the attention and exposure if given the chance.

Coldplay fans are feeling hipster.
 Like roadie #42 wrote about the X-factor performance: "Man, you’re handing haters some pretty huge bullets there…"

I don't think the majority of posters objecting to Coldplay's appearance on the X Factor are "young people", quite the contrary.

Did Oasis ever appear on x factor? Kasabian? U2? Beady Eye? Noel Gallagher's high flying birds?

I'm about 98% sure that none of them would have ever been asked. Go away.

And why's that? Because they are proper indie/alternative/rock groups
