Well true.. :) I hope all your days/nights get better.

Thanx Row, it's better now I've watched the South Bank show. I've seen it in bits and pieces before. Will be good to discuss tomorrow and Coureli, loved the screencaps. Think I'm going to check out some vids people have posted and watch em. :nice:

OK I found the death by Chris in here! LOL..

I loved this video. The bit where Chris descibes his Dad at a posh luncheon, talking about his two sons.. 'yes one of my sons is an international Rock star, the other is a banker..' and the guy his Dad is talking to says.. 'ooh which bank?' LOL.. Which sums up where he comes from. I have head that quote before, but never seen it.

I loved the fact that Jonny and Will are just walking around London, getting on buses, and nobody is noticing them.. DESPITE a camera crew alongside them! LOL.. But I understand it was just to demonstrate that nobody recognises them in the street. It must be so strange, to have that anonymity in daily life, and then step onto the stage to the kind of reception they get..?

OK well, I will come back to this thread later...

That story about his dad was great. I love how utterly modest and self-deprecating they are. And polite, too! I saw them being all well-mannered and pleasant in the video, and I just kept thinking, "How have they managed to make some people hate them so much? It's one thing to not care for the music, but they're so freaking nice and inoffensive, so why so much strong vitriol from some out there?"

Another thing I kept thinking throughout the video: Guy's voice is like butter and I want to hear more of it.

The things that really made me gush and get all "Eeeeeei!", though-what the hell, I'll share 'em now since we're starting to talk about specific stuff:

First off, BONO! I was really pleasantly surprised to see him being interviewed in here, talking about the guys. It always makes me happy when I hear about one band I love praising another band I love. What can I say, I want all my favorite people to get along :D. It was also cool to see Dave Grohl chat them up, and Neil freaking Diamond, of all people, as well, at the Grammys.

Second, ohhhhhhh, that whole bit with "Back For Good"! I love that song! That's another thing I like, finding out I share the same musical tastes with my favorite artists (or actors)-every time I hear someone I like discussing their favorite albums or artists or whatever it always makes me want to go hang out with them and listen to music. Hearing them join in on that song was just heavenly. I went and found some clips afterward from the War Child show where that happened, looks like a whole host of awesome people gathered together at that. What I wouldn't give to have been there.

Couple more comments about the thing to start off the discussion. Will talk more about it tomorrow.

I couldn't agree more.. WHY do people hate them so much? It's a really hard question.. maybe people who have followed them longer could jump in here and perhaps give their view point? Maybe it's their very 'niceness' that pisses people off?

I don't know and now I have to go to work.. sadly.. see you all later.

Good night :D

:dead: OH MY GOD !!!!!! :dead:

Hello Chris Martin, nice to meet you.

:dazzled: :dazzled: :dazzled: :dazzled:

I love that story about his dad too.

And that's so weird to see that Jonny and Will can take the bus without being recognized. They're part of one of the most famous and successful band in this world !!

That story about his dad was great. I love how utterly modest and self-deprecating they are. And polite, too! I saw them being all well-mannered and pleasant in the video, and I just kept thinking, "How have they managed to make some people hate them so much? I don't understand why people hate them so much, either. They're ALWAYS nice and polite. I don't get that. I mean you can have a problem with their music, cause everyone has the right to have different tastes but how can people have a problem with them as human beings? That's some kind of a mystery for me.

And I love the part where the interviewer says: don't be so self-deprecating Chris.

And Chris says: Yes I know, everyone is irritated by it, my parents, even my wife gets irritated

One of my favorite moments of the show is at the beginning. The Viva chant at their gig in Tokyo. And Chris jumps and says "Let's goooooo!" and thousands of people jump...So beautiful. It must have been an incredible moment to live, from the floor but also FROM THE STAGE! I totally get them when they say it's an incredible feeling and you never get enough of it. I mean, I've never lived that, but I can imagine it must be EPIC! :awesome:

EDIT: That story with his dad is pretty awesome

And I think people hate them for that reason : they're so nice, humble & polite, some people may think it's fake, and that they're hypocrites, and other may just be irritated by that attitude of self-depreciation, like Chris points out in the interview. I love when people are nice, but some people can't handle that, apparently. Maybe it reminds them that they're not that great themselves, and so they get upset. Gwyneth said in an interview that she doesn't get mad anymore, she doesn't take personally, when some people are mad at her for some reason, because she realized they're mad at themselves more than at her, and she has nothing to do with it. It could be one explanation here.

I mean you can have a problem with their music, cause everyone has the right to have different tastes but how can people have a problem with them as human beings? Exactly. I have my little group of celebrities I love, and then most of them are just there and I don't have an opinion really one way or another. The only way I could ever truly dislike, or hate, someone, famous or not, is if they're rude, and cruel, and treat people horribly.

I mean, sure, Coldplay aren't saints, they have their pissy days like everyone else, I've no doubt about that. But they're not mean people. They're good at heart and seem like really sweet guys-Chris' story in the video about how seriously guilty he felt about kicking Will out of the group early on was so touching and made me go, "Awwwwwwwwwwwwww...". How many people would freely open up about stuff like that? So unless they, I dunno, kicked a puppy down the stairs or beat up some poor old lady or murdered someone or whatever, I fail to see what would make them worth hating.

I think Row was on to something about their general "niceness"-we always expect our musicians to be too cool for school and jaded and into the "sex, drugs, and rock and roll" lifestyle. It's not "cool" to wear your heart on your sleeve, as they say, and to be open and emotional and care about things and sing pretty songs. It makes you look "wimpy".

But while I certainly do like some artists who fit into that category, and agree that some of the craziness has led to good stories and entertaining music, at the same time, doesn't that attitude and same old "party, sleep with girls, go to rehab, etc." story get a little old after a while? It tends to destroy a lot of great bands, too, often times. And I kinda like that Coldplay's avoided that stuff. I like that Chris is happily married-I'm jealous, but I like that :p. I like that they're not "love 'em and leave 'em" guys. Or strung out on drugs. Or whatever. And if that makes them "wimpy" or "uncool", well, so be it. It'll work to their advantage in the long run, anyway.

And I love the part where the interviewer says: don't be so self-deprecating Chris.

And Chris says: Yes I know, everyone is irritated by it, my parents, even my wife gets irritated

Hehe. I've noticed a lot of people have said that to him. I think that's just charming.

you're right it is fortunate that Chris Martin does not get into drugs or drinking. this is because Gwyneth Paltrow is a kind wife and not selfish, and more their two children Apple & Moses made the couple solid. I loved them they were all telling at the end of the video.

Yeah I can just imagine how awesome it is for them to go on stage and have a show like that !!! :) And I truly believe that they genuinely enjoy every show they do and that makes me happy for them. How amazing must that be to able to do exactly what you wanted to do ??? :D

I agree with the second part, too. I think a lot of people are really jealous of them and maybe they think they are hypocrites, but they just don't know them well enough (like watching interviews, or sth)

Hehe. I've noticed a lot of people have said that to him. I think that's just charming.

  EXACTLY !!! I think the same way.

Whenever I like a song from another band/artist and I start watching interviews or reading stuff about them, and they're like very into that stupid "rock'n'roll" and "cool" thing or they're really superficial, arrogant and overproud, I just stop listen to them. It may sound very stupid, but when I like an artist, I must like the music and the personality. And Coldplay are just awesome. I just love the fact that they're totally the opposite than the others. That has just attracted me more to their music. I don't know if that's understandable but for me it's absolutely the case.

And : Yes it is so charming :wacky: so so so charming xD

I think the reason because a lot of people hate them is "to be alternative".

For example I'm not in this kind of music very much, actually Coldplay are my only exception, I'm in to metal and classic rock and I can say that people with my same taste, in the 90%, hate Coldplay. Why? Because they are not metal. It's such a stupid thing but I swear it's the truth. Probably they don't even know a Coldplay's song but they hate them cause of their narrow-mindedness. I can only say I'm sad for them, narrow-mindedness is always a sad thing.

A lot of people just want to appear different and to say "Coldplay suck" only because a lot of other people love them.

Other people, on the other hand, hate them because of their fans. It's a thing that I notice lately. There are a lot of fake fans lately, not fake in a negative way, just people that knows only one or two songs of MX, but they are really vexatious sometimes. I don't know if you understand what I mean...

You had already nominate all my favorite part. I liked the goals list :laugh3:

There is a part where Guy says that a band have to change and grow up to not boring with its sound...I don't know, maybe it's true, maybe not...I'm the kind of person that doesn't like change, maybe this is the reason because I don't particularly like MX, it's ok to grow up but it's important don't loose identity.

Ha, it was me who uploaded the first video))) seems like it is the only legit copy left on YouTube!

Kristal, you are like me in that forever, I was into metal, and Classic rock.. I have listened to lots and lots of bands, I am older than most of you, so I was around when it was out there.. I've seen some of these classic bands, and it was great, but NONE of them have moved me like Coldplay do. And for a while, I have to admit to being attracted to all that 'bad boy' stuff.. and for a long time if you told me I would have fallen for a 'clean band' with no particular image - short hair for goodness sake! LOL - I'd have said you were bonkers.. but look at me now. :D

They are good boys.. I am sure they love their mums, they are happily married with kids, and they don't cheat. Now tell me what is WRONG with this? Why would people hate this?

The only thing I can think, is that they don't fit .. they're different.. people are scared of different and react often with distrust or even hate..

A few useful things to write down somewhere, just in case:

- Now thanks to that documentary, if I ever cross path with Chris and he's drinking Vodka-cranberry, I know he must have done something wrong, or that he thinks he did something wrong.

- Or: If I ever cross path with Chris and I order drinks, I shall NOT order a Vodka-cranberry for him

- If I ever cross path with Chris (or even other band members) in London, I shall NOT propose them to go to that place called Monkey Chews

- If I want to stalk Guy when he's jogging, I shall go to Parliament Hill :sneaky:

Like any of those things will happen one day

I totally agree with you. When I started looking into Coldplay, because I liked their music, I found out so many great things about them! Humble, live for music and not for fame, funny, and on and on... It just made me love them more and more.

"The man who is tired of London...is tired of London. No, wait, that's not it!"

:lol::lol:

:laugh2:

Love that one. I can imagine him trying to write a song that way!

 These are nice Coeurli, nice to dream. :wacky:

First off, this vid has many many fine nuggets to share and discuss from start to finish. It's amazing they are normal people when they have so many adoring and faithful fans screaming, dancing and singing back to them during a show. Glad they haven't let it get to their heads.

Chris should stop saying . "we're always shit on TV!!" they are so nervous for the big shows. They need to relax and stay calm for the big shows. Thinking about the big show tomorrow and want them to win very badly because of that moment when Guy is discussing in the video on how it's amazing to be nominated for so many but it makes it even worse when you don't win any.

Isn't Chris so charming with the Japanese interpreter? Sounding like a little kid, so eager to please and careful not to make any mistakes. It's a tricky thing with language because you don't want to offend all the people coming to see you. Can understand the willingness to get things right.

The SB interviewer talking to Chris about his running into the audience and Chris's desire to make everyone happy, do something interesting out of desperation or excitement and the interviewer says, I'm surprised you're still here  or something to that. Reminds me of the scaffolding climb at Jimmey Kimmel. Something so unexpected. I remember I didn't even scream. It was my shock and awe moment and he wasn't feeling well either. Have more to say, but get to it later. Thanks Row, enjoy taking things apart and commenting. Even the shorter videos would be as fun too. :) :wacky: :awesome:

   more :nods: I won't follow a band if they're supeficial or phony or fake or have stupid lame ass gimmicks and because they are so awesome with the fans and love them so much and always work hard to please them and take tremendous time to giving so much back to the fans to thank them. They seem to really care. :nice:

I totally agree with you!

And yes...it's the same to me, I love music and I have listened to an huge number of bands [even the more unknown] but no one of them made me feel like the guys do:)

  EXACTLY !!! I think the same way.

I totally understand what you're saying . I'm like that, too, I have to like the people as well as the music. Or movies. Or TV shows. Or whatever. And Coldplay makes total sense within my general musical tastes, they fit like a glove, but yeah, even if I listened to a whole other genre of music, I wouldn't dismiss something simply because it's not the type of stuff I typically listen to. I think it's cool when people are willing to expand their interests and give something a shot. And I think everyone else's assessment of the attitude surrounding them is spot on, too.

You know what else I found incredibly heartwarming during the show? How obvious their friendship was. When they were all giving that group hug before some show they were performing at, and all the kind words they said about each other, and all the reminiscing they were doing about their early days (that bit where they went back to the old apartment they all hung out and rehearsed at-I LOVED that part), I was just sitting there thinking, "This is so adorable and sweet."

I really hate to bring up a U2 comparison, because lord knows these guys have had more than enough of those throughout their career, but actually, this is a good one-their friendship reminds me of that of the guys in U2. Knew each other for a few years before recording together, kept their friendship intact through all the good and bad times, very democratic in how they handle their business affairs and such. I really respect that in U2, and I'm thrilled to see Coldplay's following the same mindset.

It also cracked me up to hear that Will is usually the one who's first to veto an idea, because, again, that's how it is in U2-their drummer, Larry, is like that as well . Must be a drummer thing.

And : Yes it is so charming :wacky: so so so charming xD

It's scary how well I can relate to Chris on the whole modesty/own worst critic thing. Really. I know how he feels.

I also like, too, how, when Chris does say something that can be seen as arrogant or cocky or whatever, he's fully aware of it. I honestly think a lot of peple misunderstand the way he talks sometimes (and in print sometimes jokes or comments come across wrong), he's got a very odd sense of humor and what can come off as self-important really isn't when you see/hear it in context.

Besides, what would be the point of doing what they do if they don't believe in themselves at least a little bit? I would hope they think they're something special, or could be something special, otherwise there'd be no reason for them to have the drive and passion to do what they do.

That does have to be one hell of a whiplash moment, doesn't it? I find it strange they won every award in the U.S. at the Grammys but didn't win squat back home at the Brits. Go figure.

Isn't Chris so charming with the Japanese interpreter? Sounding like a little kid, so eager to please and careful not to make any mistakes. It's a tricky thing with language because you don't want to offend all the people coming to see you. Can understand the willingness to get things right.

That was so cute. I'd be studying up like crazy, too, one misused word and all hell can break loose. I've heard stories. So I appreciate that they take the time to do that.

Touring has got to be the weirdest thing for any human being to do. Keeping a bunch of words and phrases in your head for each country you visit, going to a bunch of places, sometimes within one day, barely getting any sleep, talking to every interview outlet imaginable and answering essentially the same 10 questions over and over and over...I honestly don't know how bands manage to survive it all. It's no wonder some implode from the pressure and stress of it all.

But man, hearing the crowds cheer and sing along...that has to be something special.

The SB interviewer talking to Chris about his running into the audience and Chris's desire to make everyone happy, do something interesting out of desperation or excitement and the interviewer says, I'm surprised you're still here  or something to that.

That was so incredibly awesome. I commend the band for just keeping on with the song, and I was stunned that the audience kept singing along while all the chaos went on around them. I don't know what got into Chris that day, but I love totally random moments like that.

"The man who is tired of London...is tired of London. No, wait, that's not it!"

:lol::lol:

Hehehehe. So, so, SO incredibly cute. He had a look on his face like, "Wait, wait, I'll get it, it's on the tip of my tongue, I swear..."

 I would also to tell Chris to stop saying that they're shit on TV, and they really have to relax a bit. But on the other hand, that's Coldplay. They're like that. They worry so much and I understand them. Cause I'm a bit like that too. I mean i think they're who they are cause they have this huge passion for music and they really want to do it right I think. But I agree they should relax and enjoy too. But at some extend, I think they do. :)

Chris IS REALLY awesome with that Japanese girl, (made me feel jealous, if they come to Luxembourg, I would love to be an interpreter for them ) and I believe that's really tricky to do all the language things right. And it's so lovely from him to put that much effort into it. And he's always sooo nice.

And the Sound Relief thing was so impressing. I mean the whole thing was so cool, but I understand that Chris said that it was a bad idea. xD He was exhausted.

And it must have been so cool at Jimmy Kimmel. Chris didn't do such spectacular things at the concerts I went to xD

   more :nods: I won't follow a band if they're supeficial or phony or fake or have stupid lame ass gimmicks and because they are so awesome with the fans and love them so much and always work hard to please them and take tremendous time to giving so much back to the fans to thank them. They seem to really care. :nice:

Exactly!!! that's why I love them so much. :wacky:

I totally understand what you're saying . I'm like that, too, I have to like the people as well as the music. Or movies. Or TV shows. Or whatever. And Coldplay makes total sense within my general musical tastes, they fit like a glove, but yeah, even if I listened to a whole other genre of music, I wouldn't dismiss something simply because it's not the type of stuff I typically listen to. I think it's cool when people are willing to expand their interests and give something a shot. And I think everyone else's assessment of the attitude surrounding them is spot on, too.

Yes it's the same for me. :)

 Their friendship is so heartwarming and so genuine, that's so special in such a business.

I can relate to Chris, too and it feels very strange. I really understand what he's trying to say. If people would actually take time to really understand and get what he means, they wouldn't immediately critizise him, cause his personality is so awesome. I understand his sense of humour as well, and often I notice that the interviewers don't and then I feel bad for Chris, cause he's just trying to do everything right.

 Touring must be sth really special I agree.

Me too

It really is. I've often noticed with all my favorite bands that there's a loyalty that runs through them-they keep a lot of the same friends and family around from before they were famous and they have been friends for a long time, too. It's a quality I apparently seem to look for and value :).

As I mentioned elsewhere, I like how openly affectionate they are, too. That's not something you see a lot of men do (depending on where you live, this may vary, though), and it's great that they're so unabashadly friendly and touchy-feely. They may not be related, but they sure have a real brotherly love.

Exactly. I know there are some barriers that can't be helped-language, delivery (if someone meant to say something in a funny way but it came off rude or if they're in a bad mood that day what would normally be lighthearted may not be or whatever), stuff like that-but yeah, I always try and get the proper context for what anyone says. I don't want to misunderstand them. And I know journalists have to edit things for space and such, but they should find a way to get people's words across with their intended meanings, too.

And besides, people have made much stranger, meaner, crazier comments over the years. The worst people can level at Chris is that he comes off a bit cocky about his band's talents and popularity? Not exactly an offensive statement, and often a very common one from, well, pretty much ANY band.

Yeah you're right, they're almost like brothers and that's really something of real value.

And concerning the journalists, that's true, it's not easy (my dad does sports journalists things and I see when he has to cut interviews) but they have to preserve the initial meaning of what the boys want to say.

I agree, people take him out of context ALL the time.. you read stuff in the papers and you know where it's come from because you've seen the interview, but the way the papers tell it, it means something totally different.

As for that run into the audience ! My god ! Every time I see that I worry! and I KNOW what's going to happen! LOL.. how in heavens name they all kept playing and singing when he was doing that I don't know? they really truly must have thought he was gone for good!!
