Tomorrow's Daily Mirror (4 May 2012): Coldplay Chris' hearing torment

Featured Replies

I got tinnitus from having ear infections a lot when I was younger. I'm not tormented by it, it's just like an unimaginably high-pitched backdrop that I only notice when I'm thinking about it or when it's quiet.

sometimes i noticed an ear-thing in his ears during the concerts, but i've never thought that he had something serious... :uhoh: :uhoh:

Chris Martin, Coldplay Frontman Reveals Tinnitus Hell

Coldplay star Chris Martin has been fighting a secret battle with painful ear condition tinnitus for over a decade.

The rocker first started suffering from the ailment in 2002, and has to live with ringing in his ears and regular splitting headaches.

He blames listening to loud music in his teens, which can trigger the condition, and now is forced to wear special earphones on stage to ensure his tinnitus doesn't get any worse.

Opening up about his health battle, Chris told The Mirror: "I've had tinnitus for about 10 years, but since I started protecting my ears it hasn't got any worse - touch wood.

"The band use moulded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors. You can use industrial headphones but they look strange at a party.

"Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don't think about until there's a problem. I wish I'd thought about it earlier."

A source adds, "Chris suffered with terrible ringing in his ears and excruciating headaches. If he hadn't sought treatment, he might not be performing today.

"When he does perform, he wears ear monitors to prevent hearing loss."

Chris is now fronting a charity campaign to raise awareness of tinnitus alongside fellow sufferers rapper Plan B and Gary Numan.

Ok after reading the whole thing it makes a lot more sense.

It's a good tip. My 16 yr old son is a musician (sings, plays piano and guitar) and dreams of performing live. Now I know to make sure he always protects his ears when the time comes.

I have one friend who has what his doctors say is around 60% hearing loss just from tending bar in a local music venue for a few years. Daily exposure to that kind of noise adds up faster than most people realize.

Here are the scans from today's Daily Mirror...

OH DEAR BIG HEADLINE !! :o

Hmmmmmmm... Is it possible to get this ear problem from listening to music on headphones everyday? I don't listen to it incredibly loud... just normal volume.

That depends on what you consider "normal" volume. If it's loud enough, it will damage your hearing over time. Extremely loud volumes can cause significant damage with relatively little exposure though. There's loads of good info on Google about what decibel levels are in the unsafe range.

If he really has this problem since 2002 and it didn't get worse since then, why we only get to know this now :inquisitive:

you know what is agony ?

hurts my ears the sounds of this review

^ agony means that you suffer :(

"Some might say it explains a lot about their music" ?!!!

Clear sign that stupid video is a trolling attempt

Boy, what would they have done without that clip of Chris coming out to sign signatures after an interview?

Boy, what would they have done without that clip of Chris coming out to sign signatures after an interview?

Then this video would have been even more lame, if that's even possible.

And I LOL'd way too hard at your post! :laugh3:

Well, that is unfortunate that Chris has developed tinnitus :(, but I doubt it's going to 'cripple his career'. He's been living with it for ten years, and it seems that he's taking measures to keep it under control, so I doubt there's anything to worry about. ;)

It sounds like he aquired most of the damage before he even had a career to speak of. I'm still waiting for some "wit" to pipe in with the fact that the onset of his tinnitus appearently coincided with the last period in which the band's work was universally acclaimed.

Don't know if you guys read this article already(see below). When I went to the May 4th show, a crew member passed out bunch of earplugs to the security guards near the stage. Then the guards gave them out to whoever wanted them. I was there with my daughter. They asked if she got earplugs.

Plan B and Chris Martin back earplug campaign

4 May 2012 Last updated at 06:10 ET

Rapper and actor Plan B only learnt of his condition when he visited an ear specialist

Tinnitus sufferer Plan B is supporting a charity campaign which urges music fans to protect their hearing.

Tinnitus, a constant buzzing in the ear, is often caused by loud music and is prevalent among musicians and frequent concert-goers.

The Loud Music campaign aims to make people aware of the dangers.

"If you're listening to music a lot, producing music or performing live, then always wear earplugs," said Plan B. "You're not Superman!"

I damaged my hearing

Mark Savage BBC News entertainment reporter

Twenty years ago, as the CD I was listening to faded out, I noticed a constant, high-pitched hum in my room. It sounded like a TV had been left on with the sound turned down. But the TV was unplugged at the wall.

Eventually, I chose to ignore the noise and slowly wrestled myself to sleep. When I woke, it was still there. It is still there today.

I developed tinnitus because I play the drums. It turns out that the volume and pitch of the cymbals, positioned handily at ear level, is a perfect way to damage your hearing. But even a short exposure to loud noise can trigger tinnitus.

Luckily, my condition is manageable and I cannot hear the 16kHz buzz above normal conversation. But I wish someone had offered me ear protection when I was younger. You don't miss silence until it's gone.

"When I first developed it, I thought it was trains rushing by my house as I live near a railway line - it was really loud and an extremely high-pitched ringing in my ears," the 28-year-old singer says.

"There's no doubt it's been caused by years of being on stage and subjected to very loud decibels of music."

The Action on Hearing Loss campaign includes adverts and a video featuring people's ears being attacked by a drill or hammer.

Earplugs will be handed out during London's Camden Crawl this weekend, which showcases new music talent and is credited with bringing artists such as Amy Winehouse into the limelight.

"Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don't think about until there's a problem," said Coldplay's Chris Martin, who is also backing the campaign.

"I've had tinnitus for about 10 years, and since I started protecting my ears it hasn't got any worse. But I wish I'd thought about it earlier.

"Now we always use moulded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors, to try and protect our ears."

The Coldplay frontman has been suffering from tinnitus since he was 25

The campaign includes five tips on how music lovers can avoid permanent damage to their ears, including standing back from speakers and using chillout zones in clubs.

Judge Jules, Jazzie B and DJ Smith have added their backing, while 70s chart-topper Gary Numan said he wished he had taken advice earlier.

"I didn't look after my ears and I'm in trouble," said Numan, 54. "It's getting serious, to the point that I can't mix my music properly anymore, so it's majorly impacted on my career.

"If I'd just looked after them when I was younger then this would never have happened, so I very much regret it.

"I would often be at gigs, standing at the front next to the speakers, not wearing earplugs, thinking I'm cool and being manly, but that's just rubbish, it's stupid.

"So look after your hearing and wear earplugs."

Don't know if you guys read this article already(see below).

I posted the part about Chris here

When I went to the May 4th show, a crew member passed out bunch of earplugs to the security guards near the stage. Then the guards gave them out to whoever wanted them. I was there with my daughter. They asked if she got earplugs.

I'm glad they do that! I always ask for earplugs or I bring them with me. But I only use them when the support acts are on stage.

Me too! I took my earplugs out when Coldplay started. But I have my daughter kept hers in the entire show. It's nice that CP really care about the people who come to see them.

The headphones? It was REALLY loud at the Weenie Roast, even backstage. The backstage area was all open air, and just on the other side of the stage. He's wearing the headset so he can hear the questions of the interviewer.

I started hearing this buzzing noise in my left ear right after i began listening to Coldplay every night. I only heard the sound at night, now I no longer put ear phones in my left ear at all and now I don't hear the noise anymore. Trust me it was so annoying, I couldn't even sleep. I have this fear of going to a concert now...

If it's Tinnitus, it won't go away. You'd be able to hear it even after you stopped using the headphones. A lot of other ear conditions can produce similar yet reversable symptoms though.
