Tomorrow's Daily Mirror (4 May 2012): Coldplay Chris' hearing torment

Chris Martin, Coldplay Frontman Reveals Tinnitus Hell

Coldplay star Chris Martin has been fighting a secret battle with painful ear condition tinnitus for over a decade.

The rocker first started suffering from the ailment in 2002, and has to live with ringing in his ears and regular splitting headaches.

He blames listening to loud music in his teens, which can trigger the condition, and now is forced to wear special earphones on stage to ensure his tinnitus doesn't get any worse.

Opening up about his health battle, Chris told The Mirror: "I've had tinnitus for about 10 years, but since I started protecting my ears it hasn't got any worse - touch wood.

"The band use moulded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors. You can use industrial headphones but they look strange at a party.

"Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don't think about until there's a problem. I wish I'd thought about it earlier."

A source adds, "Chris suffered with terrible ringing in his ears and excruciating headaches. If he hadn't sought treatment, he might not be performing today.

"When he does perform, he wears ear monitors to prevent hearing loss."

Chris is now fronting a charity campaign to raise awareness of tinnitus alongside fellow sufferers rapper Plan B and Gary Numan.

Plan B, Chris Martin, Judge Jules...

Plan B suffers from tinnitus that sounds like a train. Chris Martin has had tinnitus for 10 years. Judge Jules is a big supporter of our Loud Music campaign.

Find out why these stars, and other famous musicians, protect their hearing.

What do the artists say?

Plan B:

‘I’m Plan B and I suffer from tinnitus. When I first developed it, I thought it was trains rushing by my house as I live near a railway line - it was really loud and an extremely high pitched ringing in my ears. I had to see an ear specialist as I couldn’t get rid of this ringing noise, I didn’t know what it was, and I was told it was tinnitus.

I now have to wear special earplugs when I go to bed to help stop my ears from ringing. There’s no doubt it’s been caused by years of being on stage and subjected to very loud decibels of music. So if you’re listening to music a lot, producing music or performing live, then always wear earplugs. You’re not Superman and your hearing matters!’

Chris Martin:

'Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don't think about until there's a problem. I've had tinnitus for about 10 years, and since I started protecting my ears it hasn't got any worse (touch wood). But I wish I'd thought about it earlier. Now we always use moulded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors, to try and protect our ears. You CAN use industrial headphones, but that looks strange at a party.'

Judge Jules:

‘I feel really strongly about listening to music safely and that’s why I’m a big supporter of the Loud Music campaign. I’ve been in the industry for over twenty years and although I’m lucky not to suffer tinnitus or hearing loss, so many of my colleagues and friends do from listening to loud music for long periods. Be wise and wear earplugs when going to clubs or when exposed to loud music.’

Jazzie B:

‘So many musicians have suffered from tinnitus or hearing loss because they weren’t educated about the dangers of listening to loud music and wearing earplugs. The Loud Music campaign wants to change the way people listen to loud music. Earplugs should be a part of everyone’s essential Saturday night entertainment!’

Gary Numan:

‘I’m Gary Numan, this is a message for people who go to clubs or listen to live music to look after your ears. It’s advice that I wish I’d had, as I wouldn’t be in a position I am now. I didn’t look after my ears and I’m in trouble. It’s getting serious to the point that I can’t mix my music properly anymore, so it’s majorly impacted on my career. If I’d just looked after them when I was younger then this would never have happened, so I very much regret it. I would often be at gigs, standing at the front next to the speakers, not wearing earplugs, thinking I’m cool and being manly, but that’s just rubbish, it’s stupid. So look after your hearing and wear earplugs.’

DJ Andy Smith:

‘I wear noise-cancelling headphones whenever I’m listening to music to protect my hearing. It means I can enjoy music at a reasonable volume with absolute clarity rather than having to turn up the volume but still struggle to hear over background noise!’

I think this is part of a campaign, I have no doubt about Chris words, but tinnitus is an unusual problem in young people ( I´m doctor) , I´ve beeing listening loud music for years, which I think is bad, but my worry is about hearing loss not tinnitus. In ay case is a good advice.

This is pretty big news everywhere.

I hope it's not too bad. It seems like it isn't and he mentioned it to support the campaign, but then again I don't think he's someone who complains a lot. :(

Chrissyyy :(

It makes me want to give him a big hug :(

He always manages to add something funny

His trouble sleeping probably has a lot to do with this, and since relaxation techniques helps, I guess the yoga is great for it too. He's been suffering from it as long as we've listened to the band, so hopefully, he can continue to do what he loves and it doesn't get worse. He's done fantastically so far.

It's a habit I picked up working for a concert promotor several years ago. When you're attending 2-4 gigs a week and standing quite near the speakers, you learn to be aware of such things.

It's a good tip. My 16 yr old son is a musician (sings, plays piano and guitar) and dreams of performing live. Now I know to make sure he always protects his ears when the time comes.

I can vaguely remember reading about Chris insisting that little kids without earplugs be moved to the back of the venue during a Coldplay concert.

Yes. I was at a show during the viva tour when they would do the fan upgrades to the front row. I had my daughter with me at the time in the wayyyy back and the girl offering the upgrades said she could not move us because Chris had a fit and got really mad at her when she upgraded a family with a kid at a show before. He was very protective over kids and the loudness.

Aww! I can't think of many rock stars who'd even bother about such things. Chris is truly special! Oh and now I also recall that he made sure to give Christian O'Connell earplugs come concert time. Christian was doing a documentary about Coldplay and flew with them to Germany during the Viva tour.

He's almost hard to believe he's so wonderful/cool/humble/gracious/appreciative/talented/charming/hilarious/every other adjective you can think of.

If Chris says to lower time spent with headphones and loud music....I shall!

But i will still listen to them on low setting :sneaky: :P

THIS!

Awww. That sucks. I don't have tinnitus but I can only imagine that it REALLY sucks.

:(

It's so great that he cares about little kids. Aww ♥

I hope that everything's fine with Chris and that these gossip magazines are only liars!

The BBC website isn't a gossip website.

"Looking after your ears is unfortunately something you don't think about until there's a problem," said Coldplay's Chris Martin, who is also backing the campaign.

"I've had tinnitus for about 10 years, and since I started protecting my ears it hasn't got any worse. But I wish I'd thought about it earlier.

"Now we always use moulded filter plugs, or in-ear monitors, to try and protect our ears."

obviously that is not a gossip..

he has been suffering tinnitus for 10 years..but how could we learn this now.. ? he haven't even mentioned this before! we watched & listened & read plenty of interviews but nobody said that he had been tinnitus problem, including roadies. :(

sometimes i noticed an ear-thing in his ears during the concerts, but i've never thought that he had something serious... :uhoh: :uhoh:

Wow, it's crazy how many articles he gets for a simple hear problem !

That's really cool that he looks out for people at the shows like that. Smart move.

This sounds like a really crap thing to deal with. Sorry he's had to go through it, but I'm glad he's figured out how to manage it well enough over the years. Certainly makes me reconsider how I listen to music and everything.

2x I've had my ears ringing right after exercising. It goes away after a little while. Are you familiar with that at all?

considering the kind of person Chris is, I doubt tinnitus will 'end his pop career'. He's too spectacularly amazing.:)
