Coldplay's Clocks crowned no.1 on BBC Radio 6 Music's countdown

Nothing else compares!!

Will: That always happens to us at the end... you get to a point where it's finished and there's always a gap. This was a first successful attempt at writing a song where a melodic hook was the key to the song rather than a big swooping chorus or choral singalong. We've used the same technique on a couple of other songs. Our manager [Phil] was talking about releasing it as a single and, I'll quote him, he said 'I'll eat my hat if that is a hit'... and here we are!

I think that the manager Will is referring to is Dave Holmes. But I am not sure

Phil was still their manager when they were recording AROBTTH.

You might be right, Dave took over in 2001 at some point.

He was referring to Dave Holmes at least with the "eat the hat bit." He talks about it here starting around 31:30 and specifically closer to 31:50.

CONGRATS TO COLDPLAY!! Well deserved. :D:D

Also, I read that the band was going to shelve Clocks until next album. Phil is the one who urged them to include it in AROBTTH.

thanks for this wonderful news. yeah! way to go COLDPLAY!!!

I had a good feeling Clocks was going to win. It is such a good song.

Kewl. Not my fave Coldplay song, but kewl nonetheless. Congrats, dudes.

Amazing! Congrats to Clocks!

But, reading all the hateful comments on BBC 6 Music's Facebook makes me sad

Unfortunately the people who consider themselves avant-garde in the music they listen to (even though it only tends to be Oasis, the Kaiser Chiefs, or the Arctic Monkeys) have always been ridiculously abusive to Coldplay, and it's simply because Coldplay lack any of the bullshit bravado that they adore in their music heroes. That, and they're popular.

I thought 6 Music listeners might be above that, but I guess not.

6 Music ran a poll to find the most popular nominated song: Of course the top 10 are going to all be popular songs... it's a VOTE. The most popular choice wins, and Clocks is a great song.

UPDATE: I've typed out a transcript for the interview and added it to the first post. :)
thanks much appreciated! :D

Woooooohooooo we da best. For once I voted for something that ended up winning.

I loved Parachutes when it came out but it's when I first heard Clocks that I knew that Coldplay was here to stay and that I needed to keep them :) Clocks is still my favorite song EVER.

Well deserved. I've always considered Clocks to be their best song ever.

:surprised: People on Fb are maaaad

Surprise Surprise, I totally never seen so much hate towards Coldplay before

Wonderful news. CLOCKS is indeed a wonderful song.

CONGRATULATIONS! :vuvuzela: :vuvuzela:

^^

Actually they mostly seem to be mad because they don't think that it's "representative" of the listeners, because obviously people who've never listened to that radio voted.

Well, duh, if you don't want people that don't listen to the radio to vote, don't make a poll on the Internet, then!

Best post I've ever read on here. So true. The type of people who still describe Coldplay as 'depressing' or 'beige'.

The rest of the Top 10 list:

The full top ten is:

1. Coldplay - 'Clocks'

2. Arctic Monkeys - 'I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor'

3. Elbow - 'One Day Like This'

4. The National - 'Bloodbuzz Ohio'

5. The Killers - 'Mr Brightside'

6. The White Stripes - 'Seven Nation Army'

7. The Flaming Lips - 'Do You Realize??'

8. Johnny Cash - 'Hurt'

9. British Sea Power - 'Remember Me'

10. Radiohead - 'There There'
