Sharing art which means a lot to you

Featured Replies

Bloody stressful m8.

Have you ever shared something (maybe music you love, or a film) with somebody you like and they've not liked it?

Better they tell you they don't like it, than to lie and pretend to like it

Very true, but it hurts when you share something that means a lot to you and there isn't a good response.

I have an older friend, who's a heavy metal type and thinks Coldplay is shit. He really doesn't want to listen to them and always turns the radio/music off when they come on.

^most of my friends are that way : (

My mum hates most of the music I like, well actually she doesn't hate it, she just says I listen to it too much and too loud :snobby:

yes that pisses me off

I may be a little disappointed if they don't like it but i don't really care.

Yeah, both of my parents don't understand my music taste. I had my dad go so far as to say that there HAD to be something wrong with my ears for me to listen to that and think it's actually good. :wtf:

It's in these circumstances that I've always felt like a bit of an idiot because the response I've gotten is one in which I am considered strange for liking whatever it is "so much."

I did introduce my friend to Muse though, she loves them now, has their albums and has been to see them. It was her first ever concert too.

There is a reason why I do to many shows along, my friends don't share the same tastes in music or comedy as me.

And in the end I got fed up with asking them (do you want to see band X) only for them to say no or come along and moan

I really only tend to share important songs and pieces with people that I'm really close with, so we are generally into the same things. People like my best male friend who really appreciates music (he's an amazing pianist) and my brother (he's like me and can enjoy at least a little from most popular genres).

The couple times I've shared something with my mom that was important to me, she's said things like "this doesn't even mean anything" and "how can you like this?"

But then again, she loves Luke Bryan, so I try not to take it personally. Sometimes it bothers me or hurts a little, but the song is special to me because of how I relate to it, which is unique to me and not something anyone else can understand. And on a superficial level, it would be silly of me to be hurt by someone just not liking something I like.

Exactly, yeah.

I like them to be as brutally honest as possible, so I can ball up all that bitterness and rejection and use it as a driving force to better myself creatively, so that someday, in the blissful future, I can tell them to shove their opinion up their hole. :)

It has happened a number of times that my friends didn't like the same type of music/literature but I don't care that much. Obviously, I'll feel hurt if someone tells me that a band I love is shit but in the end, that's just their opinion.

My ex-boyfriend used to tell my how shit the bands I love are.... especially Bon Iver. He was joking (most of the time). It didn't hurt me, but it was really fucking annoying. Mainly cause I wouldn't ever do it to him D;

Now that I think about it, most of my friends like the same bands as me. My mum too. Which is good because I'll always have a gig buddy. Dad and brother can't stand the bands we like though haha.
