N. Korea Has Already 'Mock Nuked' Alaska - With US Government Help New reports about threat of missile launch omit key facts Paul Joseph Watson/Prison Planet.com | June 19 2006 Reports today concerning the completed fueling of North Korea's long range Taepodong-2 missile and its planned launch within a month omit several key aspects of the story, including the fact that North Korea already launched a missile that hit Alaska, with the help of the US government. The US government gave up to $1.4bn (£760m) in assistance to bogus victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita last year, congressional inspectors say. The Federal Emergency Management Agency was tricked into funding hundreds of fraudulent schemes, the report said. Money was spent on American football tickets, a holiday, a divorce lawyer and a sex change operation, it said. The agency has acknowledged mistakes, but says it has only found evidence of fraud worth $16m (£8.6m). More than 1,300 people died when Hurricane Katrina swept across five states last August and more than three-quarters of New Orleans was flooded. Rita also wrought extensive damage after h…

MySpace plans new rules to thwart predators Changes follow other safety-related measures on the popular service By Anick Jesdanun The Associated Press Updated: 3:17 p.m. ET June 21, 2006 NEW YORK - MySpace.com is planning new restrictions on how adults may contact its younger users in response to growing concerns about the safety of teenagers who frequent the popular online social networking site. The site already prohibits kids 13 and under from setting up accounts and displays only partial profiles for those registered as 14 or 15 years old unless the person viewing the profile is already on the teen's list of friends. Under the changes, expected to be …

The Arctic Monkeys bass player Andy Nicholson has left the rock band for good after pulling out of their North American tour last month. "We are sad to tell everyone that Andy is no longer with the band," his former bandmates said on their website. "We have been mates for a long time and have been through some amazing things together that no-one can take away." Nick O'Malley, who replaced Nicholson in May, will continue playing with the group for the rest of the summer. The bass player's initial departure last month came days before the band were due to start a 17-date tour of the US and Canada. Festival schedule At the time, his absence was attribut…

Norway is starting construction on a "doomsday vault" in the Arctic which is designed to house all known varieties of the world's crops. Dug into a frozen mountainside on the island of Svalbard, it is hoped the project will safeguard crop diversity in the event of a global catastrophe. More than 100 countries have backed the vault, which will store seeds, packaged in foil, at sub-zero temperatures. Prime Ministers from five nations helped lay the cornerstone on Monday. Premiers from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland and Iceland attended the ceremony near the town of Longyearbyen, in Norway's remote Svalbard Islands, roughly 1,000 km (620 miles) from the North…

A device that could foil movie pirates who covertly record films in cinemas has been developed in the US. The prototype is able to locate the position of a digital camera, before overwhelming it with white light to render any recorded images useless. The Georgia Institute of Technology team says the invention could also prevent clandestine photography. However, the device is unable to block conventional film or the SLR cameras, preferred by the paparazzi. "We're at a point right now where the prototype we have developed could lead to products for markets that have a small, critical area to protect," said Professor Gregory Abowd of the Georgia Tech College of…

People in Aberystwyth had an unexpected windfall when a man showered what is thought to be thousands of pounds into the air at a pedestrian crossing. The man was heard to shout: "Who wants free money?" seconds before hurling the cash into the air in Alexandra Road. The incident caused chaos as drivers and pedestrians, some on their hands and knees, picked up the money. Dyfed-Powys Police said a 40-year-old man was later arrested for driving offences in nearby Aberaeron. John Morris saw what happened from outside his shop in nearby Terrace Road on Monday at about 1100 BST. He also caught the act on his CCTV system which scans the area near the town's rail…

Michael Owen will be ruled out of the World Cup once a scan on Wednesday confirms the extent of his knee injury. The England striker twisted his right knee early on in the draw with Sweden, and goalkeeper Paul Robinson told BBC Sport the injury "was a bad one". "Everyone's gutted for Michael. He did his knee quite seriously and won't play again in the World Cup," Robinson said. Manager Sven-Goran Eriksson feared the worst, saying: "Maybe he's out of the tournament, it doesn't look good." It looked as if Owen suffered serious knee ligament damage when playing a pass to Ashley Cole in the first few minutes of the 2-2 draw in Cologne. The 26-year-old, who…

Owen could miss rest of World Cup Michael Owen's World Cup is in doubt after the striker was stretchered off in the first minute of England's match against Sweden in Cologne. The Newcastle forward twisted his right knee as he played a pass to Ashley Cole near the right touchline and was replaced by Liverpool's Peter Crouch. Ice was put on the knee and it was reported that a brace was also applied. Owen will have a scan on the injured knee in Cologne on Wednesday according to the Football Association. England skipper David Beckham said he believed Owen's injury was serious. He said: "I think it's a bad one. We are going to have to wait to see what the…

A mother seeking damages from a health authority has claimed doctors breached a "warranty" by failing to abort one of her twins. Stacy Dow, 21, is claiming £250,000 compensation to cover the cost of raising the one child which survived the failed attempt to abort twins. A court heard doctors effectively give a warranty that the abortion, at Perth Royal Infirmary, would work. NHS Tayside denied liability in the case at Perth Sheriff Court. Miss Dow was told that she would be having an abortion and would no longer be pregnant, the court was told. 'Breach of contract' Her lawyer Andrew Smith told the civil hearing she had not been warned that the proced…

An internet company which sold fake World Cup tickets to children may have made more than £60,000 in the scam. Nearly 400 schoolchildren from across the UK were told they had tickets as part of a £410-a-head tour to Germany. "The promised tickets were ordered through the internet site of 'Tickets for All', a company purportedly based in Swanley, Kent," said police. "The address was fictitious, the internet site was totally fraudulent and no tickets ever existed." Detectives investigating the scam are now probing a bank account, belonging to someone in Slough, Berkshire. The victims, aged between 11 and 16, were turned away from the matches on Saturday after their t…
