Beckham and sister 'Fat-ham' A German tabloid newspaper lampooned the family of England captain David Beckham on Monday, describing his sister as "Fat-ham" and his mother as having the "smile of a peasant". When the entire Beckham family decamped to Frankfurt to watch England's opening World Cup match against Paraguay on Saturday, Germany's top-selling Bild newspaper seemed just as interested in what was happening in the stands. Beckham's 24-year-old sister Joanne came in for especially harsh treatment in the full-page spread accompanied by colour photographs. "Dear me, is she chubby. Arms, bust, bum, all very British. Joanne is the sort of girl who drinks sang…

Fans not sinning any more A POLICE chief yesterday heaped praise on England’s army of World Cup fans — saying: “It was beyond our wildest dreams that supporters could behave this well.” Gerhard Hauptmannl, head of the Nuremberg force, spoke after 70,000 packed the city to cheer their heroes against Trinidad & Tobago — with no reports of serious incident. He said: “This was an incredible 24 hours for our city. It was beyond our wildest dreams that football fans could behave this well. It was a pleasure to see them here and we hope to welcome them back in the future. Fans united ... rival supporters team up “The message is clear to every German town an…

Army plea as toxic toads march on The toxic toads have wrought havoc on indigenous animals Officials in Western Australia have called for the army to be deployed to stop an invasion of cane toads. The toxic amphibians have spread in plague-like numbers across tropical Australia since being introduced to the country in the 1930s. They were first brought to Australia from Hawaii to eradicate cane beetles, but they have had a devastating impact on native wildlife. There could be as many as 100 million cane toads in tropical Australia. March of the toad The toads have reached the outskirts of Darwin in the Northern Territory. Over the border, officials…

While on a road trip, an elderly couple stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. After finishing their meal, they left the restaurant and resumed their trip. When leaving, the elderly woman unknowingly left her glasses on the table and she didn't miss them until after they had been driving about 20 minutes. By then, to add to the aggravation, they had to travel quite a distance before they could find a place to turn around in order to return to the restaurant to retrieve her glasses. All the way back, the elderly husband became the classic grouchy old man. He fussed and complained and scolded his wife relentlessly during the entire return drive. The more he chided her,…

  9. Bosses outraged at union's World Cup 'sickie' advice Will you be tempted to a pull a sickie? Major employers have condemned a move by one of the country's buggest unions to offer its members advice on the risks of taking a sick day - or 'sickie' - to watch World Cup matches. "So you want to watch the World Cup, but you are meant to be at work when it's on," reads guidance on the website of Amicus, one of Britain's largest trade unions. "Can you play away or is the risk of permanent relegation from your job too high?" The answer, according to the union's advice, is: "It is quite difficult to prove that someone is not really sick if they have one da…

  13. Ok, Ive seen threads about the world cup already, and i already knew how crazy brazilians were about the World Cup (or just football in general). But today i was at the airport waiting for my flight to come back home and watching Australia vs Japan, and i started noticing how EVERY single person in the food court wouldnt take their eyes from the television. Old people, young people, guys, girls, kids... everyone was concentrated on the game, and it wasnt even Brazil who was playing!! But that just doesnt show how INSANE brazilians are about the World Cup! The country is gonna stop for this event, and i mean it LITERALLY ! Malls are closing half an hour before brazi…

  14. Wayne Rooney was able to make a quick return to action because his injury was not a typical metatarsal break. The 20-year-old England and Manchester United striker has given permission for the details of his injury and recovery process to be made public. It reveals his fracture was on the bone at the base of the metatarsal, which heals three times faster than the bone in the metatarsal shaft. And it was not a stress fracture, which would have taken longer to heal. Professors Angus Wallace and Chris Moran, the independent medical experts who passed Rooney fit to play against Trinidad and Tobago on Thursday, released the information. The Manchester United striker pla…

Following your favourite football team in the World Cup via the net has its dangers, research shows. Many websites associated with teams playing in the tournament are infested with spyware and adware found security firm McAfee. The Angolan team has the largest number of risky sites associated with it, found the analysis. Top footballers, such as Portugal's Cristiano Ronaldo, also have some unsafe sites connected with them. Risky results To gather their statistics McAfee researchers looked at websites hosting screensavers related to the 32 teams competing in the World Cup. This was cross-referenced with data from McAfee's SiteAdvisor software tool. Th…

Hey guys ! I couldn't find anything about this using the search function, so I hope it hasn't been discussed yet. I just wondered, if there was a way to convert .rm audio files to mp3 (or wav or anything else). I mean, of course, I know there is a way to do that, but I simply cannot find a decent program :( I've tried several things, but they either don't work at all or stop after half of the file has been converted, because it's the trial version (even though the page said, the trial version had all functions for 30 days - grrr. No fun, if your file is about an hour long.) So, I'd be really, really thankful, if any of you could help me out here. Because it's star…

England fans will not be allowed to watch live home matches in the centre of Manchester following arrests during the screening of Saturday's game. To avoid future trouble with drunk and disorderly fans, the BBC and Manchester City Council have decided not to screen any England matches in Exchange Square. Instead, a new Big Screen will be set up in Castlefield and fans will have to apply for free tickets to gain access. All other World Cup games will continue to be shown in Exchange Square. However, England v Trinidad and Tobago will not be shown on 15 June as authorities claim they will not be able to guarantee crowd safety. Troublemakers A total of …

The annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission begins on Friday on the Caribbean island of St Kitts. The indications are that for the first time in 20 years nations which favour whaling may have a majority. The expected shift comes after years of lobbying by Japan to get developing nations to join the IWC. Environmental groups accuse these countries of voting with Japan in return for aid, a charge which the Japanese deny. The basic argument is the same as it has been for years. The self-styled pro-conservation countries led by Australia, New Zealand and the UK, believe whales are intrinsically special animals and should never be killed. …

Bush calls for gay marriage ban Mr Bush criticised rulings on the issue by "activist courts" US President George W Bush has called for a constitutional amendment to ban same-sex marriages. Mr Bush used his weekly radio address to deliver a plea for the US Senate to formally define marriage as the union of man and woman. He said the measure was needed because "activist courts" left no alternative. An amendment stands little chance of being passed but analysts say Republicans see the issue as a vote winner in November's mid-term polls. They say the president is seeking to switch the spotlight onto positive issues for his party in the wake of his slumping pop…

Poll: Majority support troops, not Iraq war Many in U.S. say atrocities against civilians isolated, but invasion a mistake The Associated Press Updated: 10:07 a.m. ET June 9, 2006 WASHINGTON - The latest Associated Press-Ipsos poll found that many Americans perceive the alleged atrocities against Iraqi civilians by U.S. forces as isolated incidents while saying the U.S.-led invasion was a mistake, an unusual disconnect that sets this conflict apart from Vietnam. The survey of 1,003 adults was completed Wednesday, shortly before the announcement that U.S. airstrikes had killed Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, the al-Qaida leader in Iraq, and the Iraqi parliament’s approval …
