A Swiss hygiene inspector calls By Imogen Foulkes BBC Geneva correspondent Moving house is said to be one of life's most stressful experiences but, in Switzerland, it is made even more stressful by strict requirements on how you leave your old home. Imogen Foulkes moved house recently and describes the day the hygiene inspector came to call. I have to confess, I have always been a bit intimidated by the Swiss devotion to cleanliness. Women in Switzerland spend a couple of hours a day cleaning the house It all began not long after I arrived in Switzerland when, as a new mother, I was invited for coffee by a woman who had had her baby in the sa…

Five things to avoid on a first date By Debbie Magids, Ph.D First impressions count. It takes just seven seconds to size someone up, rightly or wrongly. First impressions come in two stages. First are your looks, next is what you say. The latter is so important, because the other person has no idea of who you are, so what you say will have a strong impact. If you get past the first stage of judgment – your looks – you’ve got a good chance of breaking through the second line of defense, if you watch wh…

You are complex. At times serene and tranquil, you provide an atmosphere of relaxation and retreat which is a very powerful magnet. But you are not perfect. You habitually needle people. In your youth you swayed to the hot, pulsing beat of "Light my Fire" (despite the danger it posed to yourself, friends and family). Frequent anti-fire lectures by Smokey the Bear fell on deaf ears. Well, so many yanks on the baord, why not educate them in the way to speak, they can wow their friends with new lingo. Here's how it works..... the americans can ask for the british meaning of a word, we reply... and british can give a few translations of their own... for exmaple Boner = hard on, stiffy Hot = fit Having a period = the decorators are in haircut = ears lowered trash = rubbish Trunk = boot (of a car) Cell phone = mobile phone
